PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

It was a disappointing end to the Super Rugby campaign for the DHL Stormers as they suffered defeat against the Sharks at DHL Newlands last

weekend. Good luck to the men from Durban as fly the South African flag during the Vodacom Super Rugby play-offs.

A fter a few weeks of no rugby I’m very happy to see that the fixture list is slightly more active this week.

Some of the clubs that have no fixtures have arranged friendly matches between themselves, which is good to ensure some momentum.

@jpnaude

Despite the loss, there are many positives to focus on as we prepare for the Absa Currie Cup. We have seen the emergence of many talented players, who will play a big role during our domestic campaign. This includes the likes of prop Alistair Vermaak and scrumhalf Dylon Frylinck, who come from a club rugby background via our amateur talent identification programme.

With many of our seniors on Springbok duty, they will get the opportunity to take the lead for DHL Western Province in a newly-established eight-team Absa Currie Cup. I wish the team good luck as they prepare for a tough challenge.

With the end of Vodacom Super Rugby, it’s sad to say our goodbyes to stalwarts Peter Grant, Deon Fourie and Gio Aplon, who will continue their careers elsewhere. We will never forget the hard work you have given over the years. Thank you for being heroes and role models to thousands and thousands of Cape Town people.

Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

Activity is of course the life blood of the club and these clubs need to be commended.

During the past few years we’ve done a fair amount of education training on media and sponsorships to help empower clubs. They should take advantage of all these spaces during the on- and off-season to keep activity alive.

Social media today allows for communities to engage their members constantly, not only by using a current activity method, but also a story-telling method. These stories can contain different forms of content and it’s up to the clubs to be creative to ensure regular activity.

In order for Cape Rugby TV to talk about clubs, we need access to a constant activity stream.

Clubs should note that friendlies are not on the fixtures list, so we suggest you publish any of these matches on Facebook, Twitter and websites to get fans and players to your club.

Have a fantastic rugby weekend.

It was a hard fought battle out there. We didn’t begin the season well but we’re

starting to come right. We’ve got a lot of hard work still to do.

We’re happy with the win. We struggled in the beginning and some strong words were said at half-time. Well done to the guys for sticking together and getting

the win.

Young Peoples showed good intent early on and threw the ball around at every attempt, taking a deserved lead into the break.

Something must have been said in the Kraaie changing rooms, because the team came out guns blazing in the second half and ultimately used their physicality to secure front-foot ball to overrun Young Peoples.

The win keeps Kraaifontein above the relegation zone, while Young Peoples have tough league fixtures to avoid the drop.

Kraaifontein hosted a determined Young Peoples team in a closely contested Super League B game over the weekend.

“”

This was a very hard game. We’re a team who love to throw the ball

around. We’ve got a lot of youngsters who are scarily quick. We’ll bounce

back from this.

BARRY WILLIAMSYOUNG PEOPLES CAPTAIN

We came here to take the 5 points. It was a game of two

Lower Paarl have dominated in the Paarl League because of their strong squad. Outside centre Ryan Jordaan has been one of their top performers this season.

The 24-year-old is a huge threat on attack as he’s explosive with ball in hand. His vision and offload abilities also create plenty of try-scoring opportunities for his outside backs.

“Lower Paarl have enjoyed a great season, with the league trophy in the bag,” Jordaan tells Cape Rugby TV. “The goal is to finish the campaign on a strong note. I’m very happy with my contributions, and want to remain consistent.”

Jordaan is a local talent who had a stint at the Sharks Academy after school. He has also represented Boland at U18, U19 and U21 levels. The speedster hopes to play himself back into the provincial set-up in the near future.

“I am very thankful for my rugby talent and want to make the most of it,” said Jordaan. “If I receive the opportunity to play at higher levels, I’d make the most of it.”

RYAN JORDAANLOWER PAARL

Loose forward Lesley Blakenberg is one of the notable talents in the Franschoek United squad this season.

He’s helped the club impress during their run in Super League C, which has seen them win seven of their opening nine games.

“I’ve been based at the club for the past five years and it’s my second year with the senior team,” Blakenberg tells Cape Rugby TV. “Franschoek have helped me a lot with my development because of the opportunities given to me. This club has a special place in my heart because of the passion on and off the field.”

Blakenberg is versatile loose forward, who makes a good all-round impact. His biggest strengths are his pace and cover defence. His speed has seen him fill in at wing when necessary.

The 21-year-old hopes to play provincial rugby in the near future.

“I’ve attended Boland trials before at school level, but never made it,” said Blakenberg. “Hopefully, I can play provincial sevens or 15s.”

Riverstones wing Kevin Cupido has been one of the standout attackers in the Paarl Division this season.

Despite the club’s failure to secure a top-six place during the league phase, they have still impressed with an expansive game on the field. Cupido has been a key part of this and was sorely missed when he suffered a neck injury. He’s an aggressive ball-carrier, who gets over the gain line regularly.

“It’s been tough to be off the field, but I’m expected back soon and I can’t wait to play with the boys again,” Cupido tells Cape Rugby TV. “The boys are disappointed we missed out on a top-six place, but we will continue grafting and working hard. I’m happy with my performances on the field, even getting to score a few tries for the team.”

Cupido has been involved in Paarl club rugby since U9 level, first playing for Young Gardens before joining Young Standards. He’s been based at Riverstones for the past three seasons, where he’s been able to play alongside most of his friends.

His goals are to take Riverstones to higher accolades.“The team wants to win trophies, so there’s plenty of hard work we have to put in to achieve this,” says Cupido.

CAPE RUGBY MAGAZINE / Issue 1014

Jamian Maree has taken on a senior role for Strand during their Super League C campaign this season.

Strand boasts a young energetic 1st XV squad, which places Maree among the core of senior players. Although he’s only 23 years old, the player is relishing this leadership responsability.

“The season has been satisfactory for the club,” Maree tells Cape Rugby TV. “Super League C is a competitive league as all the teams want promotion to the higher divisions. We just need to find consistency as we continue to progress as a team. We also hope to attract more youngsters.”

Maree is a lethal weapon in the club’s forward pack as he regularly wins go-forward ball and breaks defences with strong carries.

Having trained with the DHL Western Province U21 squad and represented the WP Disas in 2013, Maree hopes to get his chance at higher levels soon.

“I just need the necessary opportunities to prove my worth,” says Maree. “Whether it comes my way via a bigger club, the WP Disas or Vodacom Cup squad, I will make the most of my chances.”

FIGHTING SPIRIT

Situated in the area of Bonteheuwel, Thistles RFC have made a steady start to the season in the Northern League. They currently sit in

seventh position.

The club boasts one of the oldest histories in the Cape, having been founded in 1891 by a group of Scottish businessmen. They have experienced highs and lows ever since, picking up a few trophies and maintaining a fighting spirit.

They’ve played at the highest level in club rugby and can boast DHL Stormers team manager Chippie Solomons as one of their alumnus.

“Moving to Bonteheuwel from Mowbray has its challenges.” club chairperson Anthony Meyer tells Cape Rugby TV. “This is a more soccer-oriented community and it is rife with gangsterism. We’ve had to train in virtual darkness due to our floodlights being stolen.”

Furthermore, the club has lost many of its best players in recent season, making squad continuity a great difficulty.

Meyer, who has been at the club for over 30 years, is proud of the atmosphere that surrounds Thistles. “We are steadily rebuilding, using young players from our community” says Meyer. “We are a very close-knit family. Most of the supporters are the wives and girlfriends of our players.”

The club has remained competitive this season and looks likely to secure their place for next year.

Meyer, however, is already looking forward to the future.

“We want to start a youth set-up at the club. We’ve approached schools to try and get them on board to create a feeder system,” he explains.

Thistles are battling external problems this season, but remain positive.

MEN ON A MISSIONKuils River have made a great recovery during their maiden Super League A campaign.

Having gained promotion last year, Kuils River have their sights set on staying in the top division in the Province.

“The position of our club has always been to serve its members and the community. We strive for excellence on and off the field,” Kuils River President Ralph Mahona tells Cape Rugby TV.

It is clear that the club is not just there to make up the numbers in Super League A.

Founded in 1994 as an amalgamation of the Kuils River A and B sides, the club has been on a steady incline and has now reached the top rung of club rugby.

“This is our first year in Super League A. Initially we struggled to adapt, but now we are starting to find our feet,” says Mahona.

With the new league structure allowing for five new teams in Super League A, more clubs are getting the

opportunity to play at the highest levels, something that Kuils River have grasped with both hands. Mahona is very proud of the atmosphere created on match days.

“The vibe is phenomenal. We have a resident DJ, who creates a great atmosphere and a very loyal support base, who support the team through thick and thin.”

Kuils River also boasts a successful youth set-up, something that Mahona is keen to build on.

“We are conscious of the importance of a youth set-up. During the mid-season break, we organised friendlies, which saw our U20 players feature in the senior team. We want to give them as much exposure as possible.”

Several 1st XV players have come up through the youth ranks, as well as members of the executive board. This season has been a learning curve for the club, but they have taken it in their stride, steadily building momentum through impressive performances.

Van der Hoven was one of the stars who excelled for the DHL Western Province U18 Academy team during the provincial week at HTS Drostdy in Worcester in July.

He started all three games and scored two tries for the Cape Town-based union, helping them to the unofficial crown.

The 17-year-old, who is in his Grade 10 year at Rylands, credits Rangers for his development.

“I come from a soccer background, but I was encouraged to take up rugby through my cousins, who all played at Rangers at the time,” Van der Hoven tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’ve learned so much from all the players, coaches and officials, who have helped me improve as a player.”

Van der Hoven was the only player in the DHL Western Province U18 Academy squad who came from a club background. He hopes his achievements will encourage

The older False Bay junior players (14-16 years) also train twice a week and the club organises friendlies for them.

Furthermore, False Bay has one of the best records of feeding players through from the U20s to the senior team. It’s clear that the youth programme is high on the club’s agenda.

“We are working together with Sporting Chance to provide coaching for teenagers in the surrounding areas,” says Benade. “We’ve had great support from the chairman and director in this regard.”

Pieter Benade is the head of the False Bay junior academy, where he has witnessed a vast improvement in player attendance and general interest.

“The club’s youth structure went through a bit of a lull in the last couple years, but we’re steadily rebuilding” Benade tells Cape Rugby TV.

Benade, who also coaches the 3rd XV, says the juniors train twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays.

In addition to this, False Bay hosts an annual rugby tournament, where different clubs are invited to participate.

In terms of future goals, Van der Hoven hopes he can move to a bigger rugby school, where he can receive more exposure.

“I want to play rugby professionally after school,” he explains. “I had to work through six rounds of trials to earn provincial selection. Hopefully, a move to a bigger rugby school will help me secure more senior provincial opportunities.”

Which clubs have you represented?I played under the Maties flag during my time at the Western Province Institute. In 2010 and 2011, I joined UCT and featured in the Varsity Cup and Super League A, before receiving my senior provincial call-up.

How did club rugby contribute to your development? At the age of 19, I was playing regularly for the UCT seniors in Super League A. It was a great learning curve as I got used to the quicker pace and physicality. It’s a great platform for many young players as you’re forced to adapt and learn quickly.

What are your favourite club memories? Being part of the UCT squad that won the Varsity Cup in 2011 was a great experience. It was an awesome time on and off the field. We had great camaraderie in the squad as the team went on many camps and outings, which created a special brotherhood. We also recorded many comeback wins that season. The support the UCT team receives is also amazing. There’s always an awesome vibe on match days, and the old boys form a great support base.

Do you still take time to watch club games?Whenever I have the time, I head down to the Green

Mile. Many of my friends still play for UCT, so it’s always a special occasion when I get the chance to watch the team play. It was a memorable moment seeing the boys claim the 2014 Varsity Cup title in typical UCT fashion. That match will be remembered for a very long time.

What’s your advice to club players out there?Don’t be too determined on playing yourself to higher levels. Make sure you do your best for the team and do your job effectively. With consistency and hard work, you will attract the right attention. Always focus on your weekly performances and make sure you are in great condition. You never know when your opportunity will come.

A serious neck injury suffered during his time as an U20 Tech Gardens player forced Basheer Omardien into an early retirement.

However, he wasn’t prepared to give up on rugby and remained involved by joining the Western Province Referees Society. After receiving the necessary training, Omardien began life as an official in 2009.

“I still remember my first game as a ref,” Omardien tells Cape Rugby TV. “It was in the heart of Paarl on a hot day. I was so nervous as I didn’t have any prior experience. I made a couple of mistakes, but managed to do a good job. Everything got better from there.”

Refereeing has allowed Basheer Omardien to stay involved in rugby.

Starting as a referee in Division Eight, the 27-year-old has quickly risen through the ranks and is currently in Division Two.

He has hopes of refereeing at higher levels in the near future.

“It has taken me five years to move from Division Eight to Division Two, so I’ll be working hard to earn my right to be named in the top division,” said Omardien. “If I can achieve that, I’ll be hoping to referee at provincial and national level one day.”

“It’s my favorite part of the game!” Kayser tells Cape Rugby TV.

Having moved down from EP in 2011, she now feels right at home down in Cape Town.

“I love it here. Western Province look after their female rugby players,” she explains.

Kayser has the distinct honour of being in the very first Women’s Springbok Sevens Squad, something she achieved when she was selected for the inaugural tournament in 2006. She also made the previous World Cup squad in 2010.

Kayser feels that club rugby in Western Province is growing.

“It’s becoming more professional for women. It has helped my career a lot through the extra training and exposure. UWC, in particular, have been great with providing transport and other resources,” she says.

Kayser will return to her club this weekend after being away with the Western Province side.

Charmaine Kayser is one of the experienced heads in the Western Province team. As an inside centre, she is direct and loves a good tackle.

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us a bit about your background?I’ve been at Blue Jets for seven years. When my rugby career ended, I returned to coach the U16s and enjoyed success. I then moved to the U18s before taking over the senior team in 2011. I love the club and I thought that I needed to give back once my playing career had ended.

What is your coaching philosophy?I’ve always liked working with younger players, even early on in my career. There’s something about taking that raw potential and harnessing it that I find most rewarding. We have some fantastic young players at the club, so I’m in my element!

Blue Jets have enjoyed an amazing season. Were you expecting this?We trained exceptionally hard. Everyone has put in maximum effort and that’s why we are where we are. To win all 10 games is a great achievement, but the season’s not over and we’ll continue to fight hard.

What are the struggles your team faces?Travel costs are our biggest concerns as getting to and from games are not always easy. Financially, some of the guys struggle because they are not working. We have no sponsor and we run the team from the parent’s pockets.

On the field, Blue Jets have been electric. What’s been the secret? No secret, just hard work. Our running rugby has been great and as a coach, it’s great to see hard work pay off. Our communication on the field, particularly on defence, has been our biggest strength.

What makes Blue Jets such a special club? This is my second home. It’s where I learned the game and where my knowledge of rugby was harnessed. I love the way the team plays and the spirit

MAKING A DIFFERENCEBlue Jets head coach Mthuthuzeli Madikane is leading his club to Nothern League glory.

of the club. When my playing career ended, I knew it was time to give back.

What do you think of Western Province club rugby’s new format? It’s good because it’s a shortcut to Super League C! With more teams in a league, it gives greater exposure to the smaller clubs. It will be interesting to see the play-off rounds.

What are your personal goals? To see Blue Jets playing in Super League C next year.
