PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

After an emotional week which saw the passing of Paarl Rangers RFC President, Mr Joey Kulsen, I would also like to pass on my condolences to

Darren Clarke and his family on the passing of his wife, Tassie. Tassie was involved with Masiphumelele Rugby and devoted her life to sport and the community she lived in.

We worked out the other day that since we first started the show in 2011, we have covered at least one club rugby game every weekend.

On each one of these days, we’ve filmed a mini-highlights package, interviews with the captain and coach of the

@jpnaude

Meanwhile, the President’s Cup Top 6 knockouts took place over the weekend at City Park. Clubs fought tooth and nail for a place in the semifinals as the passion and intensity of club rugby really shone through on the day.

I was so impressed by the fitness levels of the clubs - especially after a long hard slog in the league stages. This shows me that squad depth has really improved and that clubs have really upped their game in terms of conditioning.

There is so much going on in club rugby at the moment that the interest in the game is certainly rising. It really is great to see so much passion and dedication - all of which has helped raise the profile of club rugby in the Western Cape.

The DHL Western Province Disa team is currently on tour in Kimberley and has been in action over the past few days in the annual Sub-Union South tournament. It’s great to see so much variety in the squad that covers the length and breadth of the Western Cape. Well done so far to the Disa team and good luck for the rest of the week.Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

winning side and of course the man of the match. We have also spoken to the fans from time to time.

This means that have a minimum of six club rugby inserts in the show every week. We are now in our fourth season and generally only take a one month break at the end of the year, after all rugby is now pretty much has a twelve-month season.

That’s roughly one hundred and sixty shows so far, and in excess of 500 feature inserts.

Not only do we air the shows and features on Cape Town TV and DSTV, but we also upload to these features on Youtube and share them via Facebook and Twitter.

This is all done to give exposure to a club, a coach or player that might previously not have had this opportunity. We believe this has led to sponsorship for many clubs.

Credit must be given to my Cape Rugby TV crew, all administrators, fans and players, who all work tirelessly to bring more to the world of club rugby.Have a fantastic rugby weekend,

JP Naude

This past weekend saw the Top 6 knockout quarter-finals take place at City Park.

It was a day of high drama as teams across Super Leagues A, B, and C battled it out for a place in the President’s Cup semi-finals.

The match of the day was Belhar’s narrow 17-15 win over SK Walmers. It was an end-to-end affair as SK ran the ball from all angles. They had a chance to win the game in the last minute, but they missed what would’ve been a match-winning penalty.

There were convincing wins for False Bay and Milnerton as teams went all out to secure a place in the final at DHL Newlands.

The knockouts created plenty of excitement over the weekend at City Park.

This was a game we should’ve won. We had a chance to win it at the death.

Our youngsters did well under the circumstances.

ADNAN OSMANSK WALMERS CAPTAIN

That was an emotional rollercoaster. That’s the way rugby goes. Our

Hard luck to SK Walmers. We didn’t use our chances in the second half. We’re fortunate to get through this one. We have to up our game for the

Division: Top 6 Knockout Semi-FinalsMatch: Villager v BrackenfellVenue: City ParkBrackenfell qualified for the semi-finals with a convincing win over St George’s. They will need to be at their best to defeat the league winners, Villager, who are hungry for the double and will be the favourites going into this clash. A place in the final at DHL Newlands is up for grabs, so this is one not to be missed.

Division: Top 8 FinalsMatch: Hamlets v MacassarVenue: Brookside Sports GroundThis derby match will have some extra spice to it with a trophy up for grabs. Macassar came through a nerve-wracking penalty shootout against Collegians after the game ended as a draw, while Hamlets had a good win over Hands and Hearts. Both teams are riding a wave of momentum, so expect fireworks.

Division: Top 9 Champions LeagueMatch: Masiphumelele v Young Wesley’sVenue: NoordhoekMasiphumelele have been locked in a three-way race at the top of the Champions League. A victory here will all but guarantee them a place in Super League C next year. Young Wesley’s will be looking to spoil the party after seeing their own promotion hopes fade.

Division: Top 8 City LeagueMatch: Progress v HamediehsVenue: City ParkHamediehs are unbeaten in the competition and

will look to keep the pressure on Busy Bees at the top of the table. Progress have struggled this season and will hope for a morale-boosting victory over the league’s in-form team.

Division: Top 8 Northern LeagueMatch: Delft v Strand PioneersVenue: Delft Sports GroundThe only game in the Northern League competition sees the two bottom sides go head-to-head. Strand Pioneers are without a win in the competition, while Delft haven’t fared much better. This game presents an ideal chance for both clubs to begin preparations for next season.

Division: Top 8 Southern LeagueMatch: Titans v RetreatVenue: Grassy ParkTitans go into this one knowing that a five-pointer will secure them the championship. They need toprevent Retreat from picking up any points from the game, which may prove difficult as they have a 100% winning record after six rounds. That being said, there’s nothing like the potential for a title upset to fuel the fire, so expect Titans to come out guns blazing.

Division: Simonsberg RegionMatch: Kayamandi v ExcelsiorVenue: Kayamandi Sports FieldExcelsior need a win here to keep pace with the teams at the top of the Simonsberg Region. They face a Kayamandi side, who has struggled with consistency this season.

Pniel Villagers enjoyed an impressive run in Super League B and finished in fifth. A major factor behind their success was their attacking game as they were among the division’s top points scorers.

The club qualified for the inaugural President’s Cup, but were knocked out by Milnerton.

“We were so excited ahead of the game, because we beat Milnerton in the league,” Pniel’s Granville Petersen tells Cape Rugby TV.

Petersen, an explosive wing with searing pace, was a success story of the season and ended the year as one of the club’s top try-scorers.

“I think I had a good season,” he says. “I struggled with some injuries, but I managed to contribute to the team.”

Petersen, who played U18 Craven Week for Boland, is back at Pniel after spending last season at Kuils River. He hopes to make the Western Province Amateur or Disa squads in the future.

“I want to achieve high honours. I also want to play in Super League A for Pniel one day.”

GRANVILLE PETERSENPNIEL VILLAGERS

Collegians are known for the many talented players who have come through their junior ranks. The latest in the production line is inside centre Raaziq Isaacs, who has been with the club for the past 13 years.

“My family has always been based at the club,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “I really enjoyed the atmosphere on game days and there is always a good vibe at Collegians.”

Isaacs, who has represented DHL WPat U21 and Disa levels, is a skillful centre with an expansive style.

“I try to beat my man with steps and shimmies instead of bashing through him, which is unusual for a South African inside centre,” he says. “I always look to create space for our dangerous outside backs.”

Collegians have experienced an inconsistent season, which saw them finish 8th on the log in Super League B. However, their running rugby has been a highlight, and Isaacs is a big part of that.

“I feel I’ve had a good season personally,” he says. “The standard was tough in Super League B and many of our games came down to small margins.”

Young centre Jason Kriel is making a mark for both his club and province.

This season, he has been called up to the Western Province Emerging and Sevens squad. He previously represented the Blue Bulls at U19 and U21 levels.

“The sevens tournament was a great experience,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We played some of the best teams in the world.”

Durbell have had a great season and are currently in the semi-finals of the President’s Cup, which will seem them they play False Bay.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club,” Kriel says. “It’s a brotherhood here and there’s a real family atmosphere.”

Kriel has an all-round skill set, but his main weapon is his strength and power to get his team over the advantage line. He prides himself on his physicality.

“I’ve played my best rugby this season and I’ve scored in nearly every game,” he says. “I’m working towards hopefully securing a Western Province contract. Be it in sevens or 15s, I want to make a mark at the union.”

Sphephelo Buthelezi is one of the work horses in the Hamiltons squad. The imposing loose forward, who can also fill in at lock, is a strong ball carrier with explosive power and gets through a ton of work every game.

His good form earned him a place in the 2014 Western Province Emerging Squad.

“That competition was a great experience,” Buthelezi tells Cape Rugby TV. “It was good to win some silverware, but now we’ve got to prepare for the national tournament.”

Hamiltons enjoyed a great season and finished in third position in Super League A. Buthelezi is looking forward to playing in the Community Cup next year after experiencing it for the first time in 2014.

“I loved the Community Cup experience,” he says. “I think it’s great for club rugby and I’m really looking forward to the challenges coming up in next year’s competition.”

Buthelezi has been very impressed with the standard of rugby in Super League A. “I honestly think that the top teams in Super League A could give some of the Vodacom Cup sides a real tough time.”

ON THE UPHamediehs have strength in depth, which bodes well for the future.

Hamediehs are a club on the rise. They have a young and dynamic executive committee, one that is making good progress behind the scenes in the boardroom.

“We’re a close-knit group,” Club Secretary Zugdi van der Schyff tells Cape Rugby TV. “We’ve started grooming younger members to take over the running of the club and they’re doing a good job.”

This off-field success has filtered down to the senior team as they’re currently enjoying a positive season. Hamediehs finished third in the City League and are currently unbeaten in the Top 8 competition.

“We’ve definitely met our goals this season,” adds Van Der Schyff.

They’ve acquired a new sponsor and are in the process of taking the club to the next level.

“We want to develop our junior sides,” Van Der Schyff says. “Rugby is very popular in the area, but it’s a holistic process. Most of our 1st XV players come from the club’s junior structures. They come from the community, so they have a deep-rooted loyalty, which is great to see.”

A real highlight of their season was the victory over local rivals Watsonia, with whom they share the Vygieskraal fields.

“That was a really competitive match, it always is against Watsonia,” says Van Der Schyff.

The club boasts depth this season, which is very pleasing for all involved.

“Our 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs are all achieving success in their respective competitions,” says Van Der Schyff. “There’s a real buzz around the club. We have supporters who are very loyal and who have been with us since the beginning. They are the lifeblood of the club.”

Renewed EnergyStrand United has made great strides this season.

Strand United have a proud history of uplifting the community. Founded in 1978, the club formed as an amalgamation of local clubs

and has served these areas ever since.

The club’s motto is “Together, We Conquer”. This has translated into every facet of the club.

“We’re a community club first and foremost,” club secretary Redwaan Hassiem tells Cape Rugby TV. “We have a social responsibility and we’re striving to provide the necessary level of support and mentorship to our younger players.”

The club finished 6th during the Super League C campaign, and have qualified for the President’s Cup knockouts, where they will face division winners Franschoek United in the semi-finals.

“We’re excited about the game,” Hassiem says. “It’s a chance for us to get some payback as they beat us during the league phase.

“The new league format has brought an added level of excitement to club rugby,” he adds. “It seems like every club is now looking at the league table to find out all the permutations.”

The club prides itself on producing talented home-grown players. Former SARU rugby player Jalielodien Arnolds hails from the club. In recent years, the club has produced several players to the Western Province Disa Squads, including Aziz Ta Moor and Jonathan Franks.

“We’re a small community, but an incredibly passionate one,” Hassiem adds. “Our rugby has never been stronger and our squad depth is very promising. Our U20 side won their league, so the future looks bright for Strand United.”

The club is also developing their youth structures and has already brought in players from the local academy in Strand.

side was remarkable considering he’d only been playing rugby for a couple of years.

He unfortunately got injured just prior to the tournament, but that has not blighted what has been a good season for Bishops.

“We’ve had a good season,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We did the double over SACS and Rondebosch and we’ve really turned our rugby around.”

MacIntyre has been playing 1st XV rugby since last year and is another exciting running flyhalf who has emerged at Bishops.

“It’s always been part of the culture here,” he says. “As a flyhalf, it’s my job to get our backline going and to set up scoring opportunities.

“My game has improved a lot this season. I’ve been focusing on good delivery and I’ve grown as a player.”

Macintyre plans to attend UCT next year and hopes to play in the Varsity Cup. “It’s definitely a goal of mine. I’d have to build my way up from the U20s, and I’m excited about the challenge.”

“We have a small coaching staff, but that will grow over time. The kids are slowly moving away from soccer as more and more kids from Eersterivier High are coming to join us.”

In addition to a blossoming U10 team, the club has also organised for their U19 team to play in a tournament ever year in June. Although transport remains a problem, the club does a lot to help out.“Next year we’ll also be entering our juniors into the league,” says Claasen. “We’ve been playing friendlies up until now and it’s time to make the next step in the club’s development.”

Eerste River has always been a soccer-mad area. It’s a great testament to clubs like Whistling Wheels that more and more kids are choosing the oval ball instead.

“Our biggest challenge is competing with soccer,” club president Simon Claasen tells Cape Rugby TV. “Over the years, we have seen our junior sides grow and the passion for rugby is really starting to blossom.”

The club currently has four junior teams. Claasen is a hands-on president, who has always been involved in the youth set-up.

“The young boys just want to play,” he says. “They have such great natural talent and their skills at such a young age are just remarkable.

Which clubs have you represented?I’m currently registered at UCT. In 2013, I played in the Varsity Cup.

How was the experience in the Varsity Cup?I really enjoyed it. That season was a tough one for the team, so I learned a lot about my own game. It’s a very good standard of rugby as you are playing against some of the top young players in the country.

Do you think that club rugby is beneficial to a player’s development?Definitely. Personally speaking, I learned a lot playing for UCT and club competitions, like the Varsity Cup, are great showpieces for guys who have yet to make the step into the professional space. It’s a way to get noticed.

Do you ever take the time to watch club rugby?I try and watch UCT as often as possible. I watched a few of their games this season and I can say that the standard of Super League A is very high. I think a few of the top teams could compete at Vodacom Cup level.

Would you ever return to club rugby?I think it’s an ideal way to regain match fitness and build up your physicality. I’d love to play for UCT again.

What advice would you give to club rugby players out there?I’d say just stick to your guns. The minute you start doubting yourself, then others will to. Keep working hard and opportunities will come.

Divan Uys is making the most of his opportunities on the club rugby circuit. The 27-year old is in his fourth year as a Division 1 referee and is one of the leading talents on the local scene.

“Every season brings opportunities,” Uys tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’m happy with my progress so far.”

Uys, who began his career at university, is enjoying the intensity of club rugby. “It’s a sport for all shapes and sizes. As a referee, you have the best seat in the house, so you feel the big hits.

“I make sure I’m well prepared before a game,” he adds. “I need to know the permutations as you can

easily sense when a team has nothing to play for as the intensity levels just aren’t there.”

Among his list of accomplishments, Uys was named the Most Promising Referee at the Western Province Rugby Referees Society prize giving in 2012. He also received the Stellenbosch Regional award in 2009 and 2013. He is currently in the SA Academy squad.

“I’m focusing on being the best that I can be,” says Uys. “I’d love to make the SARU Panel one day, but at the moment, I’m loving every minute of club rugby.”

In Lide Maqwelane, DHL Western Province have a player of real promise. Not even out of her teens yet, Maqwelane has represented South Africa at U20 level, and is a fully-fledged member of the DHL Western Province Women’s squad.

As a 15-year old, she was selected for the Western Province U16 squad in her first year of playing rugby.

“I’ve grown a lot as a player,” she tells Cape Rugby TV. “There’s a lot of competition in my position, but I’ve benefited from the experienced heads around me.

“Players like Celeste Adonis and Laurian Johannes have been huge influences on me. There’s always something to learn.”

The Busy Bees prop is a strong ball carrier, who likes to work in the tight phases. She has enjoyed a good season for club and province.

“My form has been good this year,” Maqwelane says. “At club level, we’ve struggled for consistency, but we’re a young team with a lot of talent.

“On the provincial front, DHL Western Province have qualified for the semis, so we’re look good!”

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your background.I began as a junior player at Lower Paarl. I captained the 1st XV and was named captain of the first-ever Paarl regional side in 1997. I achieved my coaching qualifications between 2001 and 2003. In 2005, I became head coach at Lower Paarl.

The club has enjoyed an amazing season. What do you put that down to?There is a lot of talent at the club. Most importantly, the guys are 100% committed and have shown great discipline on and off the field this season. Our fitness has been of a very high standard and we tend to blow teams away in the second half, especially during the closing stages. My assistant coach Sohail Morris has also played a huge role in the team’s success this year.

What do you think of the new format? It’s been great for the club. It’s something new for the guys, so we’re very excited. Part of the new format was the Top 6 tournament, which we won. We also had the chance to play against a Super League A club in NNK. That game was amazing and to put 50 points on a Super League A side was a great and unexpected result.

Do you like your team to play a certain style of rugby? At Lower Paarl, we play a very expansive game. Our backline is our weapon and we look to keep

ball in hand and create scoring chances as often as possible.

What do you feel about the standard of rugby in the Paarl region?I think the competiveness is definitely getting tougher. We’re all located in the same area, so there are derby games every weekend. We’ve proven to be the best team in the region and I’d love us to go to the next level and possibly play Super League rugby in the future.

Are there any talented youngsters coming through the ranks? We have a very young squad with real potential. Players like Oswill Thomas and Ryan Jordaan have come on leaps and bounds this season. Neville Adams, Jean Aaron and Gueron Kulsen have also done well. These guys have grown up at the club. We want to give them as much exposure as we don’t have the funds or infrastructure to bring in players from other clubs.

What are your goals for the rest of the season? We’ve got our knockout competition starting this weekend, so we’re really excited about that. We’ve already won the league and Top 6 competition, so we’re going for the treble! We also have our traditional derby against Young People’s coming up. It’s another great test for us to prove ourselves against a Super League B side.
