Letter from the CEo and Chairman of the Board

To Our Contributors, Colleagues and Friends,

Over the past few years of a very unsettled economy we, like so many other non- profits and the families we partner with, have had to regroup, prioritize and make hard decisions. We did this while staying true to our mission and to best serve the 3,000+ children and their families who have come to rely upon us each year.

Looking back, our forty-two years of service have brought us great insights, wisdom and significant alliances which inspire and embolden us as the Cape’s leading provider and advocate for children and families.

All those years could easily blend together – like the faces of the children and the communities our families inhabit. Yet we know that each year, as with each family, we are presented with unique challenges and possibilities. Our staffs’ strong ties to each family position us to not only be a trusted partner but also to be the place where families turn to in times of crisis or need -- affording us the ability to anticipate and be responsive in timely ways to keep families at their best for the sake of their children.

Having said that, some conditions seem to remain constant from one year to the next and these constants are especially striking during an annual review. Compelling issues such as maternal depression, grandparents raising grandchildren, inclusion, literacy, school readiness, the importance of free time and play, and the social and emotional well-being of our children remain high priorities.

making critical choices and looking ahead.

As we look to the year ahead, we do so with confidence in our ability to be responsive as we build upon a very strong foundation of educational leaders, advocacy and stellar programs. The dedication of our staff and senior administrators, board of directors and partner organizations inspires us to continually do better. So does the generosity of our supporters – and, perhaps most of all, the respect and resilience of the families we are truly honored to serve.

Whether you are a donor, community partner or someone who cares about our children, we thank you.

Mary Pat Messmer Will RubensteinExecutive Director Board President

• • • Anne Scott • • •

This summer we lost a dear friend and colleague. Anne Scott, Director of Child

Care and School Age Programs, provided strong leadership and compassionate

care to this agency during her 14 year tenure. She was a consummate

professional and a devoted friend to all who had the good fortune to work with

her. It has been said that, “the mark of a good leader is that he or she can walk

out the door and no one will notice or care that they have gone.”

Without a doubt, this adage is wrong on both counts. We all noticed and we will

never forget Anne and her contributions to us all.

The agency has explored how best to celebrate and recognize Anne’s life and

service— something that would be of good use and a legacy for years to come.

On our main campus there is a small building simply referred to as

“the cottage.” It was a place Anne met with her staff and it houses colleagues

that she had worked closely with.

This spring we plan to dedicate the cottage as The Anne Scott Family

Resource Center. Memorial donations received in her memory will be

dedicated to support the extensive renovation and refurbishing.

For those who may wish to join in supporting this initiative, please

earmark your gifts to this project.
