2 CAPA’s 38th Annual Conference

The CAPA ConferencePalm Springs is the backdrop. The totally renovated Renaissance Palm Springs and beautiful Palm Springs Convention Center is the venue. It becomes ours for 4

days. PAs fill the entire hotel and the Renaissance quickly becomes PA

Central. There is never a dull moment. We learn together, we eat together and we

play and party together. We share the California PA experi-ence and it is a great one.

At CAPA, we are all about PAs and all about providing you with the most valuable and unique learning experience. We have a program filled with topics targeted to PAs and presented by dynamic speakers. More than that, the CAPA Conference is an incredible experience in and of itself. Each of you bring something special to the conference. There is a reason we return to the Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel and Palm Springs Convention Center year after year. It is absolutely the best place to hold our conference. The hotel staff and management know and love us. It is our home away from home. People try to describe the “feel” of the CAPA Conference and find it hard to describe in words. It is just very cool!!

You all make it cool and we at CAPA have a great time cre-ating events and opportunities so you have the ultimate PA experience while learning a lot, hanging out with friends and colleagues and enjoying beautiful Palm Springs. It doesn’t get much better than that.

The Conference program and activities are subject to change without notice.

CURES at CAPAFree Service at the CAPA Conference

CAPA is committed to providing PAs with education and tools to help you provide the best care possible to your patients. At

the CAPA Conference we are again providing a free service to allow attendees to sign up for California’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (CURES). Many people see the value of registering with CURES, especially after taking the Controlled Substances Education Course and hearing Jeremy Adler talk about the important and practical use of the Patient Activity Report. That report is an invaluable tool in developing a risk assessment in patients taking controlled substances.

We have made it easy, but you will still need to have 3 documents with you and/or copies of them. Make copies before you come to Palm Springs (and remember to BRING THEM with you) or we will have a scanner and we can scan them for you. Without them, you can’t register on-site at the CAPA Conference for CURES. Your life and ours will be easier if you bring the copies. This is all about making it easy for you!

Celebrating With Friends, Colleagues and FamilyThere is no better setting than fantastic Palm Springs. No better venue than the beautiful Renaissance Palm Springs and Palm Springs Convention Center. And, no better feeling than being “back home” at our home away from home where the CAPA Conference experience is born each year. You’ve gotta love it! And, you can’t beat the special CAPA group rates dur-ing Palm Springs’ peak season. The weather is perfect. There is a spectacular pool at the Renaissance Palm Springs perfect for children and adults to gather and play (they have added

a sandbox next to the kiddie pool). Palm Springs is world famous as “America’s Premier Desert Resort.” It is home to many popular desert attractions including the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and Oasis Waterpark. Fine dining (the city boasts over 400 restaurants), shopping and the weekly, Thursday evening, Villagefest are magnets for travelers. The Palm Springs Desert Museum is a showcase of Western and contemporary art, natural science and performing arts in the Annenberg Theater. The Palm Springs Air Museum high-lights flying aircraft from World War II. The Indian Canyons, owned and operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, is North America’s largest palm oasis. At the Spa Resort Casino, within walking distance of the Renaissance, you can enjoy Indian Gaming. There are unlimited golfing opportunities. Bring the family or have a romantic weekend for the two of you. Or, come alone and simply enjoy the company of your PA colleagues. For more information please visit www.palmspringsoasis.com, www.palmspringslife.com or www.palmsprings.com.

Friday Evening at the CAPA Conference – 9:00 p.m.CAPA DanceThe nightclubs of Palm Springs can’t compete with the PA PArty of the Year. It is the place to be on Friday night. We transform the beautiful lobby of the Convention Center into PArty Central with music that will please everyone. The CAPA Dance is included with your registration and guests are welcome to attend at no charge. There will be a cash bar. This really is an event you won’t want to miss!

CAPA Student Medical Challenge Bowl – Aqua CME

We’re back poolside for the Student Medical Challenge Bowl. On Saturday afternoon, just as the sun begins to set behind the mountains, the game begins. You won’t want to miss this fun, light-hearted, Jeopardy-

style game show format event. PA students answer questions in order to vie for the championship title, the coveted Student Challenge Bowl Trophy and cash prize for the winning program’s Student Society. It has become

a highlight of the CAPA Conference and so much fun to watch (and learn). So, bring your sunglasses, have a beer or soft drink, grab a lounge chair and see who will win this year’s CAPA Student Medical Challenge Bowl.

PArty At The Pool – 5:00 p.m. - CAPA All-Star BandThis year, the CAPA All-Star Band will rock the house – actually the pool deck! All will enjoy an incredible concert before, during and after the Student Challenge Bowl.

Just in case you don’t get enough dancing and music on Friday night at the CAPA Dance, we have more fun in store on the pool deck on Saturday afternoon – a live band with PA, Greg Mennie on drums!

Our special thanks to Greg Mennie, PA-C and the band for making this performance at the CAPA Conference possible.

PA Program Faculty Recognition and Special ReceptionThe number of PA programs is rapidly growing and we want to honor our PA Program faculty! Without faculty, there would be no PAs. At the conference, look for the special PA Program Faculty ribbons on badges. When you see them, thank them for their dedication to the profession. If you are faculty at a PA program, please let us know when registering so we can give you a special badge ribbon. And, please be sure to join us on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for a reception before the Student Challenge Bowl to recognize your accomplishments and network with colleagues from other California programs.

Both hotels are downtown within blocks of all of the Palm Canyon Drive activities. The Renaissance is connected to the Palm Springs Convention Center. All lectures and workshops take place at either the Renaissance or the Convention Center. The Hilton is just a short walk away. The Renaissance and Hilton are offering the CAPA Conference rate a day or two before and/or after the CAPA Conference. Make your reservations now. The hotels will sell out quickly. Total number of approved credits yet to be determined. Physician assistants should claim only those hours actually spent participating in the CME activity. These totals include optional workshops. This program was planned in accordance with the AAPA’s CME standards for Lecture-Learner Programs and for Commercial Support of Lecture-Learner Programs.

Important Notices• Name badges are provided for all registrants and MUST

be worn for admittance to all activities except the CAPA Dance on Friday night and Student Medical Challenge Bowl.

• Children under the age of 18 (including infants) will not be admitted to the Exhibit Hall or CME sessions.

• Hands-on workshops are optional and require a separate registration fee. Space is limited, so please register early.

Support Our Exhibitors – They Keep Registration Costs DownPAs are a unique group of providers who really want to listen and learn. We share this fact with our exhibitors all of the time. Please show them how much you appreciate their support by spending quality time with them to learn about their products and services. Word will get out that PAs offer a great return on their investment and our Exhibit Hall will grow. Exhibit fees help to defer costs of putting on the CAPA Conference. Let’s all show them that the CAPA Conference is where they want to exhibit year after year. Thank you.

Date: Wednesday, October 8, 2014Time: 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.Location: Renaissance Palm Springs HotelPresenter: John Bielinski, MS, PA-C

This one-day PANRE Board Review Course is a smart-based review course. We will review the topics that will be covered in the majority of the exam. We take the NCCPA outline of the test and will cover the topics that

have the most likelihood of being on the exam. This is not intended to be a comprehensive course, but rather a course that reviews the material that is heavily weighted on the PANRE, i.e. a “smart study based approach.”

To help break up the day, attendees will gather in small groups for a couple of the hours outside the classroom for guided study with Mr. Bielinski. There are beautiful, indoor and outdoor quiet spaces at the hotel which are perfect spots for additional guided learning and study sessions.

Program (Registration opens at 7:00 a.m. Course begins promptly at 8:00 a.m.)

There will be a lunch break and other breaks as well. The day will be invigorating and you will leave feeling confident in what you have learned and ready for a relaxed evening in Palm Springs. This is a highly interactive course with an Audience Response System. Topics covered will include:
