    Organization-Led Initiative in support of the UNFF

    28-30 November 2016, Rome, Italy

    Takeshi Goto, Assistant Director

    International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO)

  • Background:

    •ITTO developed “Guidelines for SFM in Tropical

    Forests” in 1990.

    •First set of Criteria published in 1992 to monitor the

    Guidelines.

    •A set of C&I was developed in 1998 and revised in

    2005 and 2015.

    •All ITTO producer member countries are requested to

    report progress toward SFM using C&I.

    •Harmonization of C&I was done

    with ATO and ACTO.

    Training WS:

    • ITTO carried out 28 national training workshops

    since 2002 to assist ITTO producer member

    countries in:

    • Understanding and implementing C&I;

    • Generating or checking national reports; and

    • Involve all stakeholders in the process.

    • Over 1,200 stakeholders have participated in these

    training workshops.

    • Nearly US$ 800 thousand has

    been mobilized to organize

    these workshops.

    Projects:

    • ITTO has implemented more than 20 projects to

    support ITTO producer member countries in:

    • Developing national level C&I;

    • Implementing national C&I; and

    • Building capacity to conduct MAR

    • Nearly US$ 15 million has been mobilized to

    implement these projects.

    Reducing reporting burden:

    • Reporting Formats ware developed in 2000 to

    facilitate monitoring and reporting.

    • Harmonization of C&I was undertaken with African

    Timber Organization (ATO) and Amazon

    Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).

    • Participated in the Collaborative Forest Resources

    Questionnaire (CFRQ).

    Status of reporting:

    Steady progress has been observed in many ITTO

    producer member countries in reporting.

    Conclusions:

    • Eight countries prepared their reports without

    assistance from ITTO;

    • Capacity is growing in generating and supplying data

    as part of routine work;

    • Considerable problems still exist in data availability

    and quality for many indicators; and

    • Capacity building continues to be required in many

    ITTO producer member countries,

    including new ITTO members.
