PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger SCHOOL COUNCIL AGM Yesterday we held our first meeting of our newly elected school council. At this meeting office bearers were nominated and elected. I am pleased to announce our new school council President is Amy Bland. Amy has been an active school councillor since her election in 2017 and will prove to be a worthy replacement for our outgoing president Janine Allen. At this meeting we also co-opted a community member. This year we co-opted the Education leader from Mayone-Bulluk Kindergarten Amanda Morely. The office bearers are as follows: President: Amy Bland Vice President: Peter Cueto-Mendoza Secretary: Meghan Goodwin Treasurer: Samantha Horde At the school council meeting we also had our Student Representative Council leaders Aleeyah and Jesel present to report. They outlined in detail the Caring for Carers Charity event being held next Friday. Some of the items that were discussed include:
Annual Report 2018 draft
Finance reports end of year 2018
Open Days review
Curriculum Dates 2019 – see below
Start of Year Assessment KABOOM SPORTS DAY Today we had a Junior Sports Day organised by our Phys Ed Coordinator Gabbi Peters. This was a high energy, well organised, exciting time for our Prep to Grade 2 students. We had many parents come along to watch which was fantastic. In addition we had our Grade 6 students support the program and acted as leaders to assist the students to complete the activities. I received plenty of positive feedback from the parents, in particular how it was great value for money considering the vast array of equipment and activities. We will provide further information regarding video clips that will be on the Kaboom website when it becomes available.

OPEN MORNINGS This week we had our first Open Mornings for the year. This is an opportunity for the parents to see learning in action. We had over 300 parents visit through the week which is excellent. Thank you to all of our parents and friends for arranging your work schedules to be able to attend. The students were very excited to show off their learning. As we explained to our parents the open day is just a normal classroom day and parents can get an insight to what a typical day of learning looks like for our students. Thank you to everyone for the very positive feedback we received which I will pass on to the teachers at briefing on Tuesday morning. REMINDERS 1. Long Weekend: Monday 11th March is a Public Holiday. There is no school on this day. 2. Photo day: Our whole school photo day is Friday 22nd March. Please note this is the official school photo day for ALL students including the Preps. The children will have their photo taken and there will be envelopes sent home from the photo company outlining the various packages available. Prep parents please note that this is in addition to the Prep start of year package. We have contacted the company and anticipate that these will be arriving at our school prior to our Photo Day. 3. Harmony Day: An email has been sent to all parents regarding Harmony Day which is one of our school’s traditional celebration days. Please read the information to ensure that you are prepared for this fantastic CELEBRATION.
4. Curriculum days for the remainder of 2019 are as below. The reason they are being held on a Tuesday is this is the only day in the week when we have all of our staff in attendance:
a. Term 1: Tuesday 29th January (held) b. Term 2 : Tuesday 7th May 2019 c. Term 3: Tuesday 6th August 2019 d. Term 4: Tuesday 3rd December 2019

EDUCATION SUB COMMITTEE
As a member of School Council, councillors must nominate membership to at least one sub-
committee. These include Finance, Education and Community. The Barton PS Education Sub
Committee meets once a month and is convened by myself and has approximately 3-4 School
Councillors as members.
During our continued establishment phase of the school, a major task we have to complete is ensuring
all school policies are written, discussed and ratified at School Council. All BPS policies comply with
DET recommendations and standards and adhere to the Schools Policy and Advisory Guide
http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/spag/Pages/spag.aspx, accessible by the general
public. You can find policies on the school website at http://bartonps.vic.edu.au/parents/#policies.
We also discuss whole school matters regarding education such as Languages, upcoming DET
required events such as NAPLAN and general curriculum needs and outcomes.
If you wish to discuss any matters regarding policies, the curriculum and/or student learning, please
don’t hesitate to contact one of the following school council members who can bring your
questions/comments to our meetings.

PREP NEWS
It has been an exciting week in the Prep building with having the Open Morning. Parents,
grandparents and special friends were welcomed into the learning hub. Our students were so
excited to have their special visitors enter their classrooms and they were eager to show them
around their learning spaces. During our Open Morning, students were learning about spelling,
which involved the word of the week ‘sun’ and this included some fun activities in which the
parents could help. After our spelling lesson finished, we transitioned into Maths, in which the
Preps have been learning about counting from 0-10. All students and parents were actively
engaged throughout this lesson by participating in various hands on activities to help consolidate
their learning.
We appreciate everyone coming to experience what the students do each day. We are looking
forward to seeing you again.
Parent Reminders
If you would like to have a chat with your child’s teacher please remember that you have the opportunity to do so after school when we are on yard duty. Now that your child has been provided with their online program logins, please encourage your child to use the programs at home. It is a valuable learning opportunity for your child to learn Maths and Literacy concepts when at home. If you have any questions regarding this please message your child’s teacher on Sentral. Please remember to talk to your child about the Responsible Pet Ownership Incursion Day on the 15th of March. If your child has an allergy to animals or is unable to pet animals please return the allergy reply slip that they received last week ASAP.

A reflection by Torsha Mukherjee and Nidish Prakash
When we first got off the bus, we were really nervous and excited at the same time. We
sat on opposite sides of the hall and got told our hut numbers. We were in huts 5 and 4.
Some of the activities we completed were surfing, abseiling, rock climbing, high ropes
course, orienteering, challenge swing, archery and the flying fox. The food was amazing
and delicious but one thing we didn’t enjoy was the ‘Australian Butter Chicken’. Our
highlights were the challenge swing, surfing, orienteering, high ropes course, assembly
and night hiking. If we had another chance to go there again we would love to go back.
Reminders
We have seen a number of students that
have been coming to school out of uniform.
Could parents please make sure students
have the correct shoes and are checking if
their child has a Barton hat to wear every
day.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
GRADE 3-6 SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Friday 29th March
The grade 3-6 students will be involved in the school Cross Country event to be held at Barton Primary.
The students have been preparing for this event throughout the last 4 weeks and will continue to do so right up
until the event in their Physical Education lessons and extra sport time to ensure they are set up for success for
this event.
Some strategies that we have been working on are;
- Controlling breathing, by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth - Keeping a steady pace
The Rainbow Challenge is all about helping kids eat a ‘rainbow’ of different coloured fruit and veg. Click
on a star every time your kids eat different coloured fruit and veg, once all the colours have been eaten,
they’ve completed the Rainbow Challenge. Don’t forget to print off a personalised certificate when they
do! You can also download your very own printable Rainbow Challenge Chart at

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES
We have enjoyed exploring Water over the past fortnight. Our Prep – Grade 2 students have investigated
water sources at Barton by walking around the school grounds to identify water storage in the tanks and
recycled water in the purple pipes.
The grade 3 – 6 students conducted an experiment to see how much drinking water we have available to
drink. Students were surprised when they discovered how little drinkable water is available!
The Grade 3-6 students are beginning to research the process of water treatment in Victoria. Did you
know the Western Treatment plant in Werribee is the second largest bird watching facility, second only to
Kakadu!

This week we are highlighting the learning from Grade 1 and 2 music. Over the past few weeks, Grade 1 and 2
students have been learning about Meter and how counting strong and weak beats leads to determining whether
music pieces are in a meter of 2, 3 or 4. One of the activities for understanding a Meter of 3 was to dance a waltz.
It is very safe to say that all students had absolute “ball” engaging with this activity!
