SENSORY WARE

The Faianças das Caldas da Rainha factory (artistic earthenware) was founded in Portugal in 1884 by Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro with the intention of revitalizing the traditional arts of ceramics and clay. This was accomplished by combining these disciplines with modern styles and silhouettes, and above all, by implementing the unique vision of Bordallo himself. Thus began the mass production of pieces that, to this day, are intimately linked to a variety of cultural references that resonate artistically on a universal scale.

Bordallo paid special attention to the frame of his largest project, choosing a lush and vital framework with grass aplenty, a water spring and two clay pits. He also promoted the education of his workers' children, setting up a primary school inside the factory's premises. All the passion and creativity put into the work, boasting social conscience, humor and transgression, lent the company a notable quality and made it responsible for a legacy of enormous value.

Bordallo Pinheiro continues to proudly incorporate centuries-old techniques into the production of its many collections. Driven by the pioneering spirit of its founder, the company continues to combine these traditions with a contemporary creativity that reinforces its prestige worldwide.

La Fábrica Faianças das Caldas da Rainha (loza de barro artística) fue fundada en Portugal en 1884 por Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, con una intención clara de revitalizar el arte tradicional de la cerámica y del barro, mezclándolos con estilos modernos de los más diversos orígenes. Sobre todo, representó una salida privilegiada para la visión única del mentor. Y fue así creada la producción en masa de piezas que, hasta los días de hoy, son un eco artístico a nivel universal.

Bordallo prestó una atención especial a la estructura de su enorme proyecto, escogiendo instalaciones exuberantes y vitales con un gran césped o jardín, un nacimiento de agua y dos canteras de barro. Promovió igualmente la educación de los hijos de los trabajadores, instalando una escuela de primaria en el interior del perímetro de la fábrica. Toda la pasión y creatividad colocadas en el trabajo, aumentando la conciencia social, el humor y el respeto, adjudicó a la empresa una notable calidad y se convirtió en responsable de un legado de enorme valor.

Ostentando orgullosamente técnicas de producción con siglos de existencia, renovándose en simultáneo, las Faianças Artísticas Bordallo Pinheiro (Lozas Artísticas Bordallo Pinheiro) son guardianes de un legado insustituible, y continuarán trabajando en su preservación. Devised by Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro and his son Manuel Gustavo, or produced in the factory under their management, the pieces of Bordallo Art are manufactured according to the original models and techniques, therefore possessing a hallmark that translates their aesthetic and historic importance.

Brought from China in the 16th century by the Portuguese, the Orange would

never escape the artist’s attention, who turned it into seductive and

highly functional tableware pieces.

HUNTING / CACERÍA

A traditional activity that goes back several generations, hunting was

widely embraced in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

CABBAGE / COL

Rough and wrinkled, with a flattened shape, the rustic green Cabbage was

placed by Bordallo at the center of the bourgeoisie’s table, where it would

otherwise never be invited.
