9:00 am – 12:00 pm TREATMENT PLANNING FACIAL AESTHETICS – A COSMETIC SURGEON’S PERSPECTIVE

To achieve optimum treatment outcome, aesthetics of the entire face need to be considered in orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment planning. The role of facial aesthetics in society and patient motivation to change their aesthetic presentation will be discussed as afoundation for treatment planning. The lecture will review from a surgeon’s perspective, howto analyze facial features and imbalances that if not addressed, will result in sub-optimal out-comes when patients present to get their “teeth straight” or to “correct their bite”. A review of aesthetic procedures that can enhance facial aesthetics for both the adolescent and adultpatient will be provided. Additionally, methods to discuss these findings with patients to determine if their real objectives will be addressed will be presented. Finally how to integratefacial cosmetic planning into traditional orthodontic treatment planning will be covered.

2:00 pm – 3:15 pm WHAT INFORMATION CAN WE USE FROM IMAGINGFACIAL MORPHOLOGIES?

Orthodontics has evolved in the recent years towards a soft tissue paradigm. Thispresentation will focus on work that has been performed on understanding facial morphologysince 2000. Some of the initial research focuses on the use of laser scanners and hasprogressed towards the use of structured light systems. The presentation will highlight theuse of technology on the 3D virtual patient, facial growth, populations studies and patientswith craniofacial anomalies / deformities.

Chung How Kau, BDS, MScD, MBA, PhD, MOrth

Dr Chung H. Kau is Chairman and Professor at the Department ofOrthodontics, University of Alabama at Birmingham. He activelycontributes and publishes in the orthodontic literature and currently hasover 300 peer-reviewed publications, conference papers and lectures. 3:45 pm – 5:00 pm MACRO-AESTHETICS OF ORTHOGNATHIC TREATMENT- NAVIGATING THE PATH OF EMOTIONAL CHANGE

A series of combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical cases will be presented. In additionto comparing pre-treatment and post-treatment records, treatment progress records will becorrelated with archwire sequencing and appointment frequency. Individual case analysis willemphasize the objectives of patient-specific facial change but will also lend itself to under-standing the emotional investment in each treatment. Individual patient experiences, beyondthe anticipated treatment outcomes, will be specifically highlighted. Parameters for assessingsuccessful macro-aesthetic change will be summarized.

Lorne S. Kamelchuk, DDS, MSc, DOrtho, FRCD(C)

Dr. Kamelchuk received his D.D.S. with distinction from the University ofAlberta in 1993 and subsequently received an M.Sc. in Oral Biology in1994 while completing research on comparative hard and soft tissueimaging of the adolescent TMJ. 9:00 am – 12:00 pm BIOMECHANICS AND AESTHETIC STRATEGIES IN OURBUSY PRACTICE

Achieving aesthetic goals has achieved prominence in recent years in hierarchy of treatmentgoals. Excessive overbite, openbite, midline discrepancy and canted occlusal plane can significantly affect smile and aesthetics of patients. These problems require specific mechanicsincorporated into the wires. This presentation will describe mechanics shown sequentially indifferent patients with aesthetics related problems. In addition this presentation will describestudies currently in progress at University of Connecticut regarding development of smartwires, surgical and vibratory methods to enhance speed of treatment .

2:00 pm – 3:15 pm INTER-DISCIPLINARY TREATMENT PLANNING IN CREATING THE IDEAL SMILE

In prosthodontics, the aesthetic outcome of the final restoration is dependent on the interactionbetween hard and soft tissues and success is achieved when the final restoration satisfiesboth the periodontal and prosthodontic requirements. This presentation will review the inter-disciplinary relationship of the restorative, orthodontic and periodontal aspects of treatment,in establishing the ‘pink and white aesthetics’ in restorative dentistry. A systematic approach to the diagnosis, treatment planning and management of these aesthetically challenging caseswill be presented.

3:45 pm – 5:00 pm DENTOFACIAL AESTHETICS AS PERCEIVED BY LAY PUBLIC – A SYSTEMATIC SUMMARY OF WHAT WE KNOW

Dental professionals are able to significantly affect tooth-related aesthetic factors such astooth position, shape, size, and proportion. Also periodontal factors such as midline deviation, smile arc, buccal corridors, occlusal plane orientation, and gingival display can be modified. Ithas been shown that the lay public is able to identify a few factors that affect an aestheticsmile, however regarding the potential influence of some factors they are less critical thandental professionals. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the general public’s preferenceswith regards to dentofacial aesthetics is essential to fully appreciate patients’ chief concerns, perception for the need of treatment, expectations of treatment, as well as the way that theirpeers will judge their appearances.

9:00 am – 10:15 am POOR ORAL HYGIENE: HOW TO IMPROVE PATIENTCOMPLIANCE IN THE ORTHODONTIC PRACTICE

It's a well-known fact among Orthodontists and their team that oral hygiene challenges impact the quality of the patient's outcome. The result of mismanaged hygiene can be decalcification, caries, gingival hypertrophy, inflammation or worse. These problems sour the Orthodontic experience for our patients, parents, referring dentists and of course our Orthodontic team. Furthermore, two-thirds of the time additional instruction on dental hygiene fails to generate any improvements.

By using the standardized check-up, oral hygiene ‘contracts’, consistent reporting, home therapy kit and other benefits offered by an oral hygiene program, we can improve upon many of the oral hygiene challenges we're faced with every day to help give our patients the highest level of care.
