CANYON CRIER FALL 2016

From the General Manager Colin Radchenko, PGA

The change of seasons comes with some exciting new challenges and several accolades for

Steele Canyon Golf Club Corporation.

First, we were pleased to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the golf course in

September. To commemorate the occasion, County Supervisor, Dianne Jacob, presented

the club with a special Proclamation plaque.

This Proclamation honored the achievements of the club for the past 25

years and declared September 3rd, 2016 to be “Steele Canyon Golf Club

Day” throughout San Diego County.

Thank you to Dianne, Chairman Ron Roberts and all the members of the

County Board of Supervisors for this special recognition.

The Club was also given special recognition by readers of the San

Diego Union Tribune newspaper. Every year, the Union Tribune asks

their readers to vote on the “Best Of” San Diego in the areas of business

and entertainment.

I am pleased to report that Steele Canyon was voted as one of the best

golf facilities in the County for 2016. Check out the plaque on display in

the clubhouse foyer.

Even with the honor of being considered one of the best, we continue to move forward on many improvements at the club.

The course restroom renovations

have been completed. All six

restrooms were given a bright new

look by installing skylights, adding

decorative wood trim, hanging new

mirrors and a fresh two tone paint

refinishing that match the floor tiles.

Final wall decorations will be added

in the next couple weeks.

The Next Project The next project, which has already been approved, is to re-vamp the current

driving range set-up for the hitting mats. We will add concrete another 4 feet

forward of where the mats are currently placed.

The mats will then be moved forward and a red danger zone line will be painted

along the entire length of the concrete pad. We will also change the irrigation

heads so that the mats do not get watered over night.

Finally, the plant material behind the hitting area will be upgraded to match the

flowering drought tolerant plants that have been used on the golf course.

The golf course will also continue to be improved over the next couple of

months. As many of you know, the hydro-seeded wild flower areas looked great

in the spring, but then

came the summer heat

which brought them to

an untimely end!

Moving forward, these areas will be re-finished

with colorful drought tolerant plants, rocks and

brown mulch so that they match the other areas of

the course.

New Acquisition

Finally, I am pleased to report that Steele Canyon Golf Club Corporation has purchased another golf

course in Southern California. The official takeover date was September 27, 2016.

It is called Dove Canyon Golf Club and is located in Rancho Santa Margarita (Orange County). Dove

Canyon is a beautiful 18 hole course that is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design.

It is a fully private club located in a gated community of 1200 homes. The clubhouse consists of 2 stories

and totals just over 52,000 square feet.

The details on a reciprocal play program will be forthcoming. Now more than ever, it is very clear that

membership (at Steele Canyon) has its privileges!

back out on the course in the late afternoon.

Also joining the Steele Canyon family of Members is Jody Fuller. I have had the privilege of working off and

How do they hit the golf ball so far????

Many of you probably caught some of the World Long Drive Championships the past couple of weeks on the Golf Channel and if you were like me you were in awe of some of the distances they were hitting those golf balls into the night. 427 yards, are you kidding me?!?!?! How do they do that you ask? Well obviously they all swing very hard, but there are some key fundamentals that you will see with all of the longest hitters.

You won’t find their drivers in the local golf shops. Just like many professional sports these guys are getting the custom clubs that are designed specifically for these competitions. They are not USGA conform-ing. Most have 50” shafts with a loft of around 5 degrees. They also are constantly replacing them as just like all new clubs they are HOT for those first few hundred golf balls off of the face.

Common characteristics you will find with all of the longest drivers - they're flexible, they use their legs in their swing, have a strong core, and have good balance. These common characteristics help create the power needed to take some outrageously aggressive cuts at the ball. Take note of that first attribute – FLEXIBILITY. While lifting weights and building muscle can help add more distance, GOLFERS must main-tain lean and limber muscles to be able to create the most club head speed.

Stabilization of the lower body is key. While you see them all lift their front leg to get a proper weight transi-tion to their back side, they still maintain a steady base which allows for additional torque with their shoulder turn to load up and then explode through the golf ball.

All of these elements are great and effective, but it still won’t get you the results unless you hit the center of the club face.

In summary, here are some of the top tips for greater distance:

Have shoulder mobility Proper weight transition Swing in balance

Have a stable lower body Get through the ball Hit center of the club face

Everyone knows these professionals as some of the longest hitters from week to week on the PGA & LPGA

Fall Maintenance - Superintendent Antonio Osuna

I’m so glad that summer is finally behind us and we can expect cooler weather for a

change!

This fall we will do a light aeration on the greens. We will only verti-cut, planet air and top

dress them with very little sand, then drag the sand in with a coco-matt. We will also be

over seeding the tee tops and collars around the greens. An application of herbicide

called Specticle will also be applied to prevent weeds and unwanted cool season

grasses from invading and contaminating our good stand of Bermuda grass as it goes

dormant in the winter. As in the past, we will be applying a product called Par SG with

iron to keep a nice green color on the fairways which provides a good contrast to the color of the roughs.

This application will continue throughout the winter. On the bare areas that were hydro-seeded with wild

flowers during the turf removal project, we will be refinishing them with colorful drought tolerant plants and

mulch to match the rest of the golf course.

This summer we cleaned out the tulies that were in the lakes on Ranch 6, Vineyard 1, and Vineyard 9. We

were able to transfer water from Vineyard 5 Lake to Vineyard 9 Lake because we have a well behind

Vineyard 2 tee that supplies the lake on 5. The other lakes will eventually be filled as well once the lake

linings are repaired and Mother Nature graces us with some rain! Meanwhile we will continue to eradicate

the unwanted tulies and weeds that want to grow on the banks so that the lakes will never have that

unkempt look again.

It was very difficult this summer to maintain great turf conditions due to the extended drought. Buying

water from the Otay Water District has become extremely expensive so we have taken many steps to

stretch the water usage in order to conserve as much as possible. Our efforts have resulted in a reduction

of close to 30% less water used this summer compared to 2 years ago. Even though the golf course may

have looked a bit dry at times, the maintenance staff and I are very appreciative of the support and

positive comments we continue to hear about our course conditions from our members and guests.

In case you haven’t noticed, our grapes on Vineyard are really starting to grow! In Sonoma

County, October 25th marked the date for most vineyards to start wrapping up their annual grape

harvest and they are anticipating a 3.9 million ton wine grape crop. This is just our first year but

things are already starting to look good for our own grape harvest in a couple of years.
