Patrón Lunares PALMA DE MALLORCA - ILLES BALEARS - ESPAÑA Menu Restaurant

THE HISTORY OF EL MONTEPIO DEL ARRABAL

The cantine, Patrón Lunares, located at number 30 of Calle de la Fábrica, has an important history in the life of the neighborhood of Santa Catalina and of Palma. For 115 years this emblematic site was the headquarters and meeting place of the Provident Society of Montepio de Previsión del Arrabal.

The Montepio was born in 1894 with the goal of providing health care to its mem-bers, who were mostly fishermen, work-ers, shoemakers and rope makers.

As today’s Social Security, the Montepío provided its members with a doctor, a midwife, a practitioner and even a burial.

The El Montepío del Arrabal has been an emblem of the neighborhood. We would like to pay a tribute to this iconic association.

When I left Cuba, I left my life, I left my love, I only thought about one thing, hav-ing/tasting a Daiquiri at the Patrón.Begin your journey with a Daiquiri, in a cocktail glass or in a very cold one-litre jar.

A perfect drink to start your meal or dinner in the pattern... AND DONT FORGET TO CONSULT OUR SELECTION OFCOCKTAILS.

Miguel Bonet Oliver, embarked at a young age on fishing boats, he was one of the best and youngest trawler captains of Mallorca. In the days when there was a lack of current technology, Patron Lunares followed coastal landmarks; used ropes, mountains and even buildings...

He shared this valuable information with the young captains that began in the art of fishing. Friends of his friends and iconic in Santa Catalina, his neighbourhood; on the days that he could not go out fishing, he got together with friends at a bar in San Magin to play his favourite pastimes, the Truc (card game). The children went to meet and greet him, a gesture that he always gratified with a few pesetas. Good and honest man, non-drinker and heavy smoker until his death.

Do you have any allergies food?

Please report this to the waiter

At last it´s here! We already have for you our Patrón Lunares craft beer. We have created it for you to enjoy a pale ale with a moderate malta scent which makes a great presentation to the characteristic flavours of the Cascade, Columbus and Mosaic hops. With a Golden and a slightly turbid appearance caused by the natural yeast in suspension. Its citric and floral scent, pairs perfectly with a wide variety of food and will become a classic to taste with our Patron Burguer.

With this magnificent beer we want to pay tribute to the life of the Patrón Lunares and all those people of the sea that have been and still are a part of the historic neighbourhood of Santa Catalina.

CHEERS TO ALL!

Patrón Lunares Beer is finally here!

INDUSTRY IN THE ARRABAL It could sound strange to talk about industry in what used to be a predominantly marine neighbourhood. Only two names of streets remain (Calle Fábrica and Calle Industria), but the truth is that there used to be an im-portant industrial presence. The appear-ance in 1865 of a law that prohibited facto-ries inside of the city walls of Palma ,made the industry sector look for new grounds and they soon established themselves in the Santa Catalina neighbourhood. Some of these industries were La Cordelera (1861) La Palmesana (1878) La Sociedad General Mallorquina (1878) La Alfombrera (1880) Gordiola (1880) La Economica, fab-rica de gas (1887) La Roqueta (1897) Vidri-eras Llofriu (1918) la fabrica de automoviles Loryc (1920). Also other industries appeared like shoemakers, ice, metal or textile, which in most cases endured until the 1950´s.Also its important to highlight the impor-tance of the small comerce shops in Santa Catalina. Photographers, pharmacies, bak-eries, hardware stores, shoe shops etc.. and the appearance of the town market, center of all the social activity even to this day. Now, with the appearance of the many bars and restaurants , the social life of the Arra-bal continues the tradition. FAM

Stories ofSanta Catalina

PLEASE TRYDAIQUIRI DEL PATRÓN

The arrival of Errol Flynn in 1950 to Mallorca could well be the script of one of his films. After getting married in Monte Carlo, city in which the stars of the golden age of Hollywood enjoyed vacations and parties, he traveled by boat with his third wife, Patrice Wymore, on his way to Gi-braltar when a storm forced him to divert the Zaca to Pollença. The beauty of the first sunrise in Mallorca tied the actor to the island during the last decade of his life. Years in which Flynn (Australia 1909 - Canada, 1959) showed the beauties of the island to illustrious friends such as Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles, John Wayne or Tyrone Power. Today’s Ibiza, full of celebrities, has little to envy to the hollywod mallorcan summers of the fifties.

With the idea of rescuing the past, Roser Amills has written The Equator of Ulysses (Ifeelbook). “I am sorry that the Mallorcans do not have enough self-esteem to add the presence of these great actors to the history of the island,” he says after diving into the actor’s memoir, the news published 60 years ago and listening to the “stories” of some neighbors of Palma. The novel - told by the fictional character Miquel Bibiloni (based on the author’s grandfather) - collects the stay on the island of “an actor who had to soften his past because he had done so many things in his life that he was not credible “ Before being one of the sexual myths of Hollywood, he was an Olympic athlete, pearl fisher, gold prospector, animal castrator and even traveled to Spain to fight with the Republicans during the Civil War, something that put him on the blacklist of the dictatorship and that was about to cost the expulsion of the island. Elisabet Sans

Mallorca, refuge to the stars of Hollywoods Golden era.

The link with Errol Flynn atracted the stars to the island.

“LEPUS MARINAE”

OCEANOGRAPHIC EXPEDITION

Son of Miguel Bonet “Patron Lunares”, he was born on June 12, 1938 in Santa Catalina where he continues living next to his wife Maria. On the verge of turning 18, he passed his exam as a naval mechanic and soon af-ter embarks two years in a cargo pail. At the age of 20, he is called to the military service and he joins the Navy in the city of Carta-gena. After being appointed the motorist of the commander’s boat he is assigned to Mal-lorca at the home of the commander Don Luis de Alarcón. In his free time he goes to a gym where he is offered a position as a boxer, which he accepts without telling at home. He became so good that he is called to partici-pate in the Olympics with the national team to what he had to refuse when his family finds out of his hobby. Linked all his life to the sea and fishing he changes profession when con-tracting marriage with Maria, with whom he opens a butcher shop in the neighbourhood. His life always linked to the kitchen, one of his great hobbies together with playing the guitar and painting, has also passed on to his children who have also continued in the world of restoration. Among his most pleas-ant memories in the kitchen he recalls the celebration of promotion of Real Mallorca soccer club to first division where he cooked paella for three thousand fans. Man of fam-ily and friends, he has always been attached to the place where today Patron Lunares is located on Calle Fabrica 30 and that today honors his father, and also him, who is still known in the neighborhood by “Lunares”.
