Despite our magazine growing, every issue I get that little bit

more pressed for space.

Theres just so much going on in our little corner of this southern nirvana.

This is my seventh issue as editor of Canterbury Rebuild Magazine. Thats

seven months of being able to play a role in sharing those stories. And, lets

face it, my timing couldnt have been better. The sheer scale of the rebuild is

unprecedented in New Zealands history.

We lost 11,000 homes and 1,500 commercial buildings.

The last year saw our annual residential build rate jump from 1601 in the

year to April 2013, to 3247 in the year to April 2014. A massive 356 new

houses were consented in April 2014. Thats more than double the 146

consented in April 2013, treble the monthly average rate pre-earthquake of

110 per month and eight times the post-earthquake monthly low of 43 in

March 2011. Central city development is also ramping up.

More than 200 private sector buildings are either under way or consented

within the four avenues. Tenants are moving into their new central city

homes every week. And, while the commercial development is aesthetically

significant, the real beauty is how they have been designed to react to

Mother Natures angst.

The department of civil engineering at the University of Canterbury has

gained international recognition for its research into the building behaviour

in earthquakes; research which now forms the basis of a number of high

profile inner city developments, thanks to the engineering expertise of Kirk

Roberts director Jade Kirk. This issue we look at the technology behind one

of these striking super structures, Hunter and Young House at 134 Victoria

Street. As they say, Earthquakes dont kill people, buildings do and,

although its been a costly lesson to learn, at least we will be leaving a

sustainable mark on the built heritage of a city and perhaps far beyond.
