Dearest friends,

The Italian Canoe Kayak Federation , which I am honored to chair, wants to be a leader and get

timely to the appointment with the city of Milan and its famous Idroscalo Club. In 2015 Milan will be

hosting Expo where the dominant theme will be the “ waterways “.

EXPO is the universal most coveted event of the world. With the full support of the Italian Olympic

Committee and all National Public Authorities , the Italian Canoeing Federation has been already able to

obtain, in case of turning out of being successful with our candidature, the ICF World Championships

of Canoeing being considered as the main Sports event during EXPO 2015. It is an opportunity that

we can not miss … being included in the official programs such as the Main Sports Event of Expo 2015

is indeed a huge value in terms of communication and universal attention.

I am sure I will not be denied if I state that , whenever my Federation had the honor to organize an

important event such as the ICF World Championships, the ECA Championships and the ICF World

Cups, without forgetting the ICF Congress … we have never disappointed expectations. This time our

candidature is even stronger because, in addition to our heart and our passion, we have strong and clear

support from RAI Italian National Television, Public Administrations, Italian Olympic Committee and

many major sponsorships.

As always, our way of working will lead to the center of attention … the Paddlers … who always are the

real stars. But, this time we will work with joy and emotion to also assist our Paracanoeing paddlers

and very properly organize their races as they will compete for the World Championships and for their

qualification to the Paracanoeing Olympic Games.

In this respect, I can hereby state with pride that the entire venue at the Idroscalo Club is ready to

welcome our Paracanoeing athletes, thanks to the important investments made by the Province of

Milan. Another important achievement has been the availability of a new College with rooms available

at low cost to accommodate more than three hundred participants, only four kilometres away from the

Idroscalo Club. The province of Milan has also thought to build a logistics facility in 2015 inside the Club.

We firmly believe in this candidature, aware of the responsibilities that such an important International

event requires. At the same time, we strongly believe in our professional ability, our enthusiasm and

determination and we are sure that , thanks to your support and confidence, a truly impeccable and

well organized ICF World Championship will be staged in Milan.

The Idea• The Italian Canoe Kayak Federation has regularly lodged its candidature for the organization of the ICF

Sprint and Para canoeing World Championships in 2015 at the Idroscalo Club of Milan during the EXPO

2015 season.

• This sport event would bind the spirit of tradition and innovation that will be represented by the

extraordinary universal event EXPO 2015. For Milan the world of Canoeing is a meeting point on the

great values of sport, full affinity with the great themes of nature, which certainly go well with the

intentions and the expectations of the EXPO.

• The venue of the event will be the Idroscalo Sports Canoe Kayak Club: now one of the most reliable

and famous canoeing venues in the world for Sprint and Para canoeing.

• We expect to welcome 2300 participants who will represent about 110 countries.

• The discipline of Olympic Canoe Kayak Sprint will be the star of the event: the most important

event because it will be the four-year Olympic qualification race for Rio 2016.

and the organizers wish to include in the program everything related to food, to the problem of food

shortage in several areas of the world, to nutrition education, to issues related to GMOs.

Milan was once the seat of the International Exhibition in 1906 with the theme of Transportation.

It is estimated that, during the 6-month season of Expo 2015, 29 million of tourists will show up,

A reborn cathedral joins fashion-forward galleries and hotels.

Compared with the Italian troika of tourism -- Florence, Venice and Rome -- Milan is often an

afterthought. But with novel, eye-catching design emerging around the city, that should soon change.

For years, unsightly scaffolding obscured the Milan Cathedral; now that most of it has been dismantled,

the newly scrubbed Gothic masterpiece, also known as the Duomo, is worth a fresh look. Across the

piazza, the city’s collection of 20th-century art is now showcased at the Museo del Novecento, which

opened in December in the restored Palazzo dell’Arengario.

Outside the historic center, former factories have been transformed into design studios, old warehouses

have been repurposed as unconventional art venues, and galleries are packed with avant-garde works.

Prof. Umberto Veronesi

Umberto Veronesi, a pioneer in the fight against cancer in Italy, was born on November 28,

1925 in Milan from a family of rural origin. He graduated in medicine in 1950 and in the city of Milan

he has carried out his scientific career (except for a brief period of work in France and England).

He joined the Institute of Tumors immediately after graduation.

He has been the first Italian president of the International Union of Oncology and he has founded

the European School of Oncology (ESO). Veronesi is specialized in the treatment of breast cancer

and has been the inventor of a revolutionary technique, the quadrantectomy, which avoids in many

cases the complete removal of the breast. Enemy of smoking, he has always been convinced that

the most effective weapon against malignant tumors (which he considers curable) is prevention,

based on a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition.

Well known and respected abroad, for eighteen years he has led the National Cancer Institute of Milan,

which had welcomed him when he was a young man. Since 1995 he heads the European Institute

of Oncology , a new kind private facility on the outskirts of Milan.

Prof. Umberto Veronesi is a vegetarian and , amongst its many private interests,

there is Canoeing, Majakovski poems and Federico Fellini’s movies.

The competition venue is provided with a building embodying the arrival tower, various offices available

to the different sectors, a wide conference room, anti-doping control rooms, the sheltered tribune

receiving 900 spectators, a 300 m long five-row staircase with plastic chairs which extends for another

200 m with concrete steps.

The speaker’s public-address system covers the entire spectators and athletes area.

Along the south side of the tower, towards the tribune, there is the big screen connected to

the Idroscalo, the Italian Federation and, on request, also to the ICF websites.

The competition is filmed by the video cameras and re-broadcast with commentary;

in this way, who is not present can follow all the stages of the competition on-line in real time.

6.3 TRAINING FACILITIES AVAILABLE NEARBY

The most suitable basin for canoe training is at about 30 km from Idroscalo, the Pusiano Lake,

where canoe competitions also take place. The other suitable basin is in Mantova, 160 km away,

which receives every year also an international race as well as the Italian national team

training meetings.

In case a change of venue were necessary, the alternative location would surely be

the lower Mantova Lake, already equipped for canoe sprint competitions.

7,0 Sport Presentationand Services7,1 SPECTATORS EXPERIENCE PLAN

The communication experts members of the Organising Committee, a long time before the event,

arrange the publication of editorial articles on local newspapers, diffuse leaflets and posters,

predispose road banners in order to create anticipation. Near the date of the event, the Press Office

manager organises, according with the Province of Milan owner of Idroscalo, a press conference

meant to involve the main nationwide media.

7,2 SPECTATORS SERVICES

A bus line of the Municipal Transport Company of Milan links the city to Idroscalo passing by the

Linate airport, proceeding afterwards to the hinterland; moreover, from mid may to mid September

a shuttle links the airport to Idroscalo very frequently. There is also a further bus line connecting the

centre of the city to the airport.

As to catering and restaurants, a bar is in function under the tribune; 500 m far from it, on the west

shore, there is a restaurant and, on the way to it, a kiosk bar.

On the east shore, opposite to the tribune, there is the restaurant providing catering for us.

Two fast food restaurants are opposite the tribune entrance.

The info-point office is operative under the tribune.

8,2 SERVICES FOR ATHLETE

Athletes, technicians, medics, physiotherapists avail themselves of the shuttle service between hotels

and the competition venue. The athletes area is located at the Idroscalo Club site, where dressing

room and toilets are available; along the lake shore there are the apposite boat racks with easy access

to embarking and debarking piers. The gazebos for each national team are located along the road

behind the hangars of the sport area. The catering service is 200 m far from the athletes’ area.

7,0 Sport Presentationand Services7,1 SPECTATORS EXPERIENCE PLAN

The communication experts members of the Organising Committee, a long time before the event,

arrange the publication of editorial articles on local newspapers, diffuse leaflets and posters,

predispose road banners in order to create anticipation. Near the date of the event, the Press Office

manager organises, according with the Province of Milan owner of Idroscalo, a press conference

meant to involve the main nationwide media.

7,2 SPECTATORS SERVICES

A bus line of the Municipal Transport Company of Milan links the city to Idroscalo passing by the

Linate airport, proceeding afterwards to the hinterland; moreover, from mid may to mid September

a shuttle links the airport to Idroscalo very frequently. There is also a further bus line connecting the

centre of the city to the airport.

As to catering and restaurants, a bar is in function under the tribune; 500 m far from it, on the west

shore, there is a restaurant and, on the way to it, a kiosk bar.

On the east shore, opposite to the tribune, there is the restaurant providing catering for us.

Two fast food restaurants are opposite the tribune entrance.

The info-point office is operative under the tribune.

8,2 SERVICES FOR ATHLETE

Athletes, technicians, medics, physiotherapists avail themselves of the shuttle service between hotels

room and toilets are available; along the lake shore there are the apposite boat racks with easy access

to embarking and debarking piers. The gazebos for each national team are located along the road

behind the hangars of the sport area. The catering service is 200 m far from the athletes’ area.

There are also two very important factors. The first is that on the territory of the Municipality

of Segrate, where most of the Idroscalo is located including the sport area and the tribunes,

and 30.000 inhabitants live, there are companies of the TV and editing sector among the most

important at the European level.

The second noticeable factor is the attending of middle school students -10/14 years old - and

the summer camps activity at the club, which means a total of around 3.000 teen-agers

approaching the canoe discipline for the first time.

12,2 MARKETING STRATEGY AND PROGRAM

The OC will assign the merchandising to an agent, in order to keep the attention to

the organising effort, but it will as usual take care of the design creativity.

12,3 PUBLIC OPINION AND LEGACY TO THE AREA

As we operate on the border of an extremely dynamic metropolis and in the territory of one

of the most florid hinterland municipalities in Italy, we have to face a massif competition developed

in any sector of the human activity; therefore the organization of excellence events are the essential

oxygen to keep at dignified levels. It is fundamental to give constantly important signals

of our presence in order to progress in the prestige ranking.

12.4 DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT CONCEPT AND VISION

The event concept is the one also developed in the previous section 12,3. In our opinion,

the reason for ICF to endorse the Italian Federation candidacy is the absolute necessity to support

it providing the opportunities to be more and more in evidence in both the national and international

sports panorama. It has to be considered, for example, the role our Country plays in the Mediterranean

basin as to the diffusion of our discipline.

for all that concerns the filming and the broadcasting of sports events, with RAI Radio Italian Television (the State

broadcasting company) from which other Countries broadcasting companies can get the rights for the diffusion

of the service. As far as the various kind of media is concerned, a very efficient press service will be as always in

function, and it will provide the diffusion of frequent on-line newsletters both in Italian and in English language for

all the other Countries, including pictures; those who are interested in receiving them have to communicate their

e-mail address to [email protected]. The website www.idroscaloclub.org is always very updated.

During the event, the official photographer will be able to provide images at once to those who will request them.

The press room will be settled in the arrival tower building hall or in a contiguous place.

takes place from different fixed positions and from two catamarans following the competition course, plus a

few cameramen troupes for interviews, which will be hosted in the athletes area. The TV reports are partially

broadcasted live and also by satellite.

13,3 PRESS CENTRE AND/OR BROADCAST CENTREThe media operators will have 70 work positions at disposal in the press room and will be in contact all the time

with their editorial offices. They will constantly receive the races starting timetables and arrival results and will get

to follow the commented stages of all races through a maxi-screen.

At the top floor of the sheltered tribune there will be 25 positions for the TV and radio commentators, they will

enjoy a perfect view of the entire competition course and of the maxi-screen in function on the side of the arrival

tower facing the tribune, which will allow them to follow the course of the programme.

13,4 LOOK AND IMAGEConsidering that Idroscalo is already one of the most visually agreeable competition venue world-wide, and being

designated among the representation sites of the city of Milan for the 2015 Expo, the whole environment and the

park surrounding it will become one of the most pleasant in Europe. Also consider that the lake surface measures

850.000 sq. m, while the whole park, including the lake, measures 1.600.000 sq. m. As it will be our press office

task to skilfully insert our communication in the current of the communication actions surely promoted by the Expo

organisation and by the press office of the Province of Milan, owner of the park, it can be deduced that a highly

prestigious image for the canoe discipline will come out of it, and consequently for the ICF, the Italian Federation

and Idroscalo Club, too. The athletes’, technicians’ and managers’ behaviour will be determining, they will have to

Next to the athletes area, the Idroscalo rescue service is active all year long with its own ambulance.

A doctor, assisted by paramedics, is always present. The rescue service is also provided with a landing

area for the rescue helicopter, connected with the Hospital Maggiore in Milan. Moreover, during the

competition there is always a second ambulance with medics and paramedics inside.

The organisation medic is anyway always present at the arrival tower.

In the arrival tower building the ICF, the Italian Federation and the OC dispose of three offices

near each other; in case of need, the OC person in charge in that moment alerts the Italian Federation

President who calls a meeting of all parts to deal together with the problem.

Being in the central building of the event, all concerned people dispose of the most effective

and immediate means of communication which allow the activation of any measure.

18,2 EVENT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

All the operating sectors of the organisation will be on line, therefore constantly informed about all that

is going on. Maxi-screens, connected to the central one outside the tower, will be set up in the press

and in the VIP rooms, and in the athletes area secretariat.

18,3 EVENT WEBSITE/SOCIAL NETWORK

The event website, visible through the ICF, the Italian Federation and the Idroscalo Club website, will be

connected with the maxi-screen on the tower and will report contemporaneously the same information,

pictures and filmed images. It is available to anyone else that might be interested to the link.

19,0 Sustainable Development19,1 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR ICF EVENTS

The present Italian, but also global economic situation, does not allow us any well-grounded forecast.

Completed the undertaken initiatives for the Canoe Polo World Championships, which will take place at

Idroscalo from the 1st to the 5th of September 2010, the OC, through its communication and relations

experts, will start a campaign to identify and interest those firms who we think might be involved as

sponsorships of the 2014 World Cup. It will be an action of progressive pressure to allow our interlocutors

to take decisions in favour of the sponsorship in times as far as possible from the present crisis, therefore

closer to the event, in an economic climate we wish to be more serene and investments favourable. This

will make the event sustainable and, furthermore, the whole future development programme of canoe

discipline in our territory.57

20,0 Participation Fee20,1 PARTICIPATION FEE

We assumed an average presence of 2300 participants for 8 days. (athletes, technicians, medics,

physiotherapists, managers, officials, technical staff). The members of the teams will pay, those indicated

to the OC by the Italian Federation will be guests for free.

• accreditation fee

• transfer arranged by the organization from airports and railway station to the hotels and vice-versa,

transfer from the hotels to the competition venue and vice-versa, transfer from the competition venue

or from the hotels for collateral initiatives

• fee for the use of competition venue structures and facilities

• medical care and first aid at the competition venue

• security service during the event

• insurance covering of the event

• parking of tow vehicles and boat trailers in the proper areas inside the sports zone of the Idroscalo

near the athletes’ village

• free mineral water at specific supply points during the competition days

21,0 VIPs and Dignitaries21,1 FACILITIES AND SERVICES

At the sheltered tribune, VIPs and managers will dispose of a reserved parking area, an elegant and well

equipped reception room at the first floor and reserved seats, and also a reserved terrace at the top floor

of the VIP room. For those who will reach Milan by plane or train, having communicated their arrival place

and timetable, the car transfer will be available towards the hotels and from the hotels to the competition

venue. A transport service will be also guaranteed to those who will participate to meetings with the local

authorities.
