Candidates for Mayor HANSEN, Mike Independent

Candidate statement

"Applied Democracy" in the 21st Century. This is the very same system large corporation operate under. Shareholders want to know their moneys/investments are safe! A billion dollar corporation comparable to Vancouver, provides mandatory quarterly reports and AGMs, to enforce accountability an transparency. A facilitator of "Applied Democracy" swears an oath to The Voters. Making The Voters the mayor's Councillors, through plebiscites on extra spending. The 'elected Councillors' will become 'Ombudspersons' for The Citizens concerns. As mayor my mandate will be The Voters/Taxpayers best interests. Issuing 'one voting share' certificate in the incorporation of Vancouver. Facilitating "Applied Democracy" in Vancouver will offer the best return for your $tax dollars$! No more out of control spending on travels, galas and "visions of entitlement". As Mayor I won't travel outside of the Vancouver area. Attending meeting by CCTV conferencing! Implementing "budget freezes" at city hall, parks and transit, ensuring accountability and transparency.

Candidates for Mayor SHANDLER, Colin

Independent

Candidate statement

I’m standing for Vancouver as an independent candidate for Mayor to return the governance of Vancouver back to its citizens.

The common denominator in all the issues I take with city hall is that they (the mayor) aren’t listening to the collective voice of the city. They try to placate us with line-toeing big media and treat us like we are not aware or don’t need to be respected.

With 19yrs experience as an executive with 3 national, 2 regional brands achieving award winning results, for the last 6 years I have been self-employed as an entrepreneur & restaurateur

I believe in the public and their ability to make informed decisions and express themselves through their vote

An avid trail runner, Co-parent of a Siberian husky, 9 years earning sobriety & sharing my neighbourhood space with artist, writers, non-profits, local musicians, teachers, students, Alcoholics Anonymous, various support groups and you.

We guarantee to legalize our BC cannabis industry thru an Elections Act tax loophole

- Under this tax loophole, the Marijuana Party can offer the City our 10% PST AND uncivil City Officials simply refuse to take millions of dollars of legal taxes So we're making a political issue about this: Frankly even those who oppose cannabis will like the revenue, and by remitting this PST, means none of our Private Co-op Clubs can be shut down by Death Canada or those new NAFTA /FEDERAL COURT rules and regulations that will be duly enforced this winter/spring

SINCE 2004, THIS CITY IS OPERATING A CRIMINAL RACKET

Candidates for Councillor CARR, Adriane

Green

Candidate statement

I promised when elected in 2011 as Vancouver’s first Green City Councillor that I’d listen to people, work collaboratively, and focus on creating a more affordable, livable city. I’ve stayed true to my promise: stood up for real affordable housing, more public amenities, lower taxes for small business, planning that puts residents in the driver’s seat, and protecting the character of the neighbourhoods we love.

But things have gotten worse in Vancouver. It will take a balanced City Council to make it better; a diverse, collaborative Council instead of majority rule.

I love Vancouver. Born here, I live in the West End; wrote my UBC Master’s thesis on community groups shaping development in Kitsilano. I’m seeking re-election with a strong Green team to champion the public good and find solutions to big issues like affordability and homelessness, congestion and out-of-control development. I want to make Vancouver better, together.

Glen Chernen was born and raised in Vancouver. He is a brother, father, husband, little league coach, financial analyst and homeowner. He will protect Vancouver from self serving backroom deals, with fully transparent and open government. Glen founded the “non developer funded”, Cedar Party for residents to be heard and help transfer power from special interests to the community.

Glen will use his ability as an analyst, to prevent Vancouver from being short changed. He will ensure Parkland obligations are lived up to by developers without delay. Glen will keep fighting for new measures such as a Lobbyist Registry and fully open information disclosure to ensure residents are protected. Glen seeks to strengthen community centres with an agreement that gives final say back to the community. He will represent businesses and residents equally with fair minded judgement while encouraging robust debate. Glen believes political parties should impose funding limits.

Candidates for Councillor CHERNEN, Nicholas

Cedar Party

Candidate statement

Nicholas Chernen, a born and raised Vancouverite, is a city council candidate with the Cedar Party. He became involved in politics 2 years ago after discovering the City Hall plan to increase density across the entire city and alter neighborhood plans with a shocking lack of public consultation or engagement. This led him to join with his brother in creating a new political party – the Cedar Party.

A proud single father to two teenaged sons, Nicholas has realized that if he wants his kids to choose Vancouver as their adult home, he has to contribute to making sure his home town stays affordable, accessible, livable and inclusive.

Nicholas is committed to work across party lines to find the best solutions for Vancouver from a community perspective, not a party perspective and this is why he supports the idea of a non-majority council.

Nicholas believes this election is about community.

Candidates for Councillor FRASER, Grant

Independent

Candidate statement

I aim to raise awareness for the necessity to improve the electoral process. This includes a locally unique proposal for campaign finance reform but more importantly focuses on vote counting.

Many support a ward system, but without significant differences to the counting process the results can be a disappointing illusion. In my opinion the only method worse than wards is the current at large system.

I have spent most of my adult life as a non-voter until becoming involved in a fight to throw out the provincial ward system in favor of STV, a form of proportional representation. My personal research during that fight led me to discover several alternatives to current standard voting systems. I believe an obvious starting point for vote counting is the little known Condorcet method. I propose developing a Condorcet/proportional representation hybrid method.

Only issues surrounding social justice are more important.

Candidates for Councillor FUOCO, Federico

Vancouver 1st

Candidate statement

Federico Fuoco was born and raised in Vancouver and still resides in East Vancouver. A graduate of Britannia Secondary, he earned a B.A. in political science and teaching certificate from U.B.C.

He remained true to his roots, and 16 years ago established Federico's Supper Club restaurant on The Drive. He's been a director of the Commercial Drive BIA for more than 10 years.

Federico has decided to run for council because he is dismayed with the direction the City has taken. When elected, Federico Fuoco will work for:

• genuine accountability, consultation, and transparency in government

• being good stewards of the taxpayer's money

• common sense transportation plan that alleviates traffic congestion, not exacerbates it

• lowering taxes, and lowering parking meter and permit rates

• preservation of neighborhoods

Federico Fuoco's motto is: " The City needs to work for the taxpayer, not the other way around! "

Candidates for Councillor GUNN, Charlene

Cedar Party

Candidate statement

I was born and raised in Vancouver. I spent several years in Edmonton where I studied Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Alberta. I currently work in Health Administration and would like to bring my individuality, intelligence, and compassion to City Hall. I feel strongly about being genuine and listening to and addressing the concerns of people in the Vancouver community.

The rapid changes in my Marpole neighbourhood without honest and true consultation has inspired and compelled me to get involved in the municipal process. I will be a strong and compassionate ally in City Hall for not only residents in South Vancouver but also for all disenfranchised Vancouver residents. I want to focus on more long-term goals for Vancouver. I believe in transparency and keeping the public up-to-date with what is happening with City Hall, giving citizens an opportunity for feedback and placing power back into their hands.

Candidates for Councillor GUSTAFSON, Jeremy

Cedar Party

Candidate statement

I grew up on Vancouver Island, moved to Vancouver in 1994 and became a home owner in Mount Pleasant in 2000. I became politically active last year when I was so disgusted with the options in the 2013 BC election I ran alone as an independent candidate to prove our political system is still accessible to working class people. It was through that campaign that the Cedar Party found me.

The main thing I offer voters is a candidate who is completely free from outside influence. I have no campaign donations from developer, mining, or oil companies, I am not obliged to vote with Cedar if I disagree with them on an issue, and I'm only thinking as far ahead as this election so I'm not afraid to burn any political bridges on the provincial or federal level if that's what it takes to meet the needs of my constituents.

Candidates for Councillor O'KEEFFE, Jennifer

Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE)

Candidate statement

Jennifer O’Keeffe is a graduate of Capilano University and an advocate for educational rights and social-justice.

As a COPE candidate for city council, she demands transparency and accountability from public officials, and has no patience for representatives who fail to abide by democratic principles or even the rule of law itself.

She fought vigorously against program closures at Capilano University, meeting with Christy Clark and other elected officials during the 2013 provincial election, pursuing government intervention in efforts to preserve programs. Her diligence revealed numerous financial ‘irregularities’ in Capilano’s budget, and she collaborated with MLA David Eby in his investigations into the overpayment of administrative personnel at various post-secondary institutions.

She is a strong and vocal advocate for COPE’s plans for a Vancouver Housing Authority, a $15 minimum wage, affordable housing, the return of autonomy to Vancouver’s Community Centres, and for dialogue - not litigation - with Vancouver’s Resident Associations.

Hotel Workers United – Local 40

Candidate statement

I am one of Vancouver's 10,000 hotel workers who make our city prosper. I am an electrician and have worked at the Hyatt for 17 years. My wife and I emigrated from the Philippines, worked hard, and sent our kids to college.

Hotel workers should have a voice on the Vancouver City Council. Hotel Workers United Local 40 has endorsed me. My Union, UNITE HERE Local 40, was the first to win humane workloads and better health insurance in the hotel industry. We are working hard to become Vancouver's new middle class.

On the City Council, I will be a leading voice for tourism workers and making tourism a greener industry. If visitors paid $1.00 for their carbon emissions, those funds could be used to provide discounted transit passes for tourism workers. That is good for workers and good for the environment. Together, we will make Vancouver a better place.

Candidates for Park Commissioner CLARKE, Roland

Independent

Candidate statement

I believe that Vancouver's Parks and Community Centres can play a larger role in alleviating the hardships of poverty and could do more to reduce the separation and isolation felt by so many in our modern city.

Unregulated survival vending is practiced throughout most of the City, if more concentrated in the Downtown Eastside due to the large percentage of people dependent upon government assistance. Our parks could be opened up to community groups that could create events and swap meets that would complement the existing system of Farmer's Markets. As coordinator of the DTES Street Market, I have fought for the rights of hundreds of vendors to make a modest living in Pigeon Park on Sundays, and I will continue to fight for the acceptance of the informal economy of binning and recycling and to be included in the civic dialog. Please vote for me on November 15th, 2014.

I have tried to save Stanley Park and English Bay Beach and all our Parks from Commercialism. I am opposed to the Aquarium in Stanley Park and whales in captivity. I am shocked that the Aquarium is now building 4 huge buildings and 2 more whale pools by the approval of the present Political party that ignores our history and agreements to keep our parks in their natural state Canada is a beautiful and free country. My name is Jamie Lee Hamilton and I am campaigning for a seat on the Vancouver Park Board. I am a lifelong resident of Vancouver and currently reside in the West End. I have been very active in civic affairs for many years. I have served on a number of boards including the Downtown Eastside Arts in Parks Committee, the Pride Society and as an Elder with the Greater Vancouver Native Cultural Society.

Issues concerning me include the erosion of public park and green space in Vancouver. I'm worried about the continued privatization and commercialization of our public spaces. The Park Board has fallen way behind in our 2.5 acres of park space for very thousand residents. Also concerning is that the current Vision Park Board in their last two terms cut $5.3 million in funding from the Board budget..

I'm also calling for a Whale and Dolphin referendum

I am Matt Kadioglu, I have a passion for livability of our city. I have been involved with city work. I am an engineer by training, lived extensively overseas. Vancouver is the best place to live and raise a family in the world. To live free like a tree but to cooperate like in a forest.

Vancouver is always placed on the top 10 as one of the best cities to live in, by OECD research. The city parks are the most important part what makes Vancouver attractive. Parks and community centers and contribution of neighbors will remain the underlying culture of Vancouver. If I am elected I would propose that developers should double the density for the reserving an area for parks in their proposals. New fruit trees that our children will enjoy. Candidates for Park Commissioner MACKINNON, Stuart

Green

Candidate statement

Making better parks and recreation for Vancouver has been my passion for the past 15 years. In that time I have been an advocate for parks and green space issues, with a focus on access, preservation and conservation. From 2008-11, I served as a Park Board Commissioner, where I worked for better maintenance of our parks and gardens. I fought against recreational fees for toddlers. I proposed measures to turn down the noise in our parks, and to ensure that washrooms were open, accessible, and clean.

I currently sit on the Board of the VanDusen Botanical Garden Association and am a Special Education teacher at Killarney Secondary. Now more than ever Vancouver needs Green Park Commissioners to ensure that parks, gardens, and natural spaces are a priority, to ensure recreational programs reflect the community, and that decisions reflect the values of the citizens.

Candidates for Park Commissioner WYSS, Cease

Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE)

Candidate statement

T’uy’tanat - Cease Wyss Skwxwu7mesh/Sto:Lo/Hawaiian/Swiss

I have lived most of my life in the City of Vancouver. My work history and my personal involvement as an artist with the Park Board, the 26 centers, and 3 Neighborhood Houses give me a deeper understanding and viewpoint of this role.

I was approached and nominated by (COPE) Coalition Of Progressive Electors, to run alongside an incredibly diverse and amazing team of other candidates whom I feel very confident in running alongside.

My hope, if elected, is to be a voice for the citizens of this city and to bring about concerns that are faced by the people who utilize these public spaces.

I hope to help create better cultural handshakes with the diverse people who share these spaces, and create better access where there is less access being created through population growth and the changing face of this city.

Candidates for School Trustee NGUYEN, Bang

Independent

Candidate statement

To the parents and voters of Vancouver, it's time we stop asking parents for money and come up with a better way to generate revenue for our kids. I currently have 2 kids in the Vancouver education system. I want to make sure that every students path to post secondary, is a smooth one. We need to stop having SPLIT classes in the elementary schools.

We concentrate so much on filling our classes to make budget, that we forget the vulnerable students that are lost in the shuffle. We need to make sure that every kid does not go to school hungry and that they have the right supplies to help them with their schooling. I believe that French immersion should have their own schools. As long as you have the heart and drive, we will make a difference in shaping our kids educational future! Vote for a better EDUCATION...............

Vision Vancouver

Candidate statement

Cherie Payne has a passion for public education that stems from watching her parents struggle to send her and her sister to Crofton House, university and graduate school on working class salaries. Candidates for School Trustee WOO, Sophia

Vancouver 1st

Candidate statement

I am a practicing mental health clinician in Vancouver

I am running for a second term with Trustee Ken Denike endorsed by Vancouver 1st elector organization.

Why are we running? Because we recognize the role we play on the VSB as opposition. We have contributed on numerous occasions where the board has needed leadership. We listen to parents, staff and the broader community, and are passionate to carry through motions in public forum.

Right from the start this is about a new and more inclusive vision for Vancouver localized in the new multiethnic, multicultural, evolving city.

This is a new voice for Vancouver, one whose focus and goals come from the citizens, old and new, and not the old politics that ignored too many Vancouver communities and citizens.

I am recognized as a community leader and passionate promoter of public education and am recipient of Outstanding Chinese Woman Award, 2007.
