the IO Supplementary Conditions to OAA Document 600 thatappear to be unfair and unresaonable. The Pro-Demnity documentcomplements the OAA Advisory issued in July 2017.

Reminder to Members

Amendments to the 2012 Ontario Building Code Members are reminded of interim amendments to the 2012 OntarioBuilding Code (OBC). Ontario Regulation 139/17 amends the 2012Building Code in stages. As of July 1, 2017, new requirements to support the Long-TermAffordable Housing Strategy came into effect including:

1. creating a specific occupancy classification and constructionstandards for retirement homes, and

2. amendments regarding houses with secondary suites.

Coming on January 1, 2018, there are additional requirements insupport of climate change and environmental initiatives including:

1. clarification of water pipe sizes,2. implementation of on-site sewage gravel-less leaching

chambers, and3. electric vehicle charging for homes and workplaces

The up-to-date amended OBC is available on the e-Laws web sitewww.ontario.ca/laws.

Changes to the Technical Standards & SafetyAuthority Practice Members are advised of changes to the Technical Standardsand Safety Authority (TSSA) Fuels Safety Program. In an advisorytitled “Furnaces used for Construction and Finishing Heat” datedSeptember 27, 2017, TSSA noted “Gas furnaces manufactured onor after May 1, 2017 are not permitted to be used in Canada forheating of buildings or structures under construction.” The TSSA further notes that such furnaces may be used forfinishing heat provided the listed requirements are met. Whileprimarily directed to builders and heating contractors, architectsshould be aware of the need to provide some other form oftemporary heat during construction. Governor General's Medals in Architecture - Callfor Submissions The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and theCanada Council for the Arts invite architects to participate in thecompetition for the 2018 Governor General’s Medals inArchitecture. Awarded every two years, the medals recognize andcelebrate outstanding design in recently completed built projects –big or small – by Canadian architects. The application process is quick and easy at www.raic.org.
