April marks the two year anniversary of RSVP Montgomery, and as Miley Cyrus sings, it

has truly been “all about the climb”. There has been a whirlwind of activity over the

past several weeks… fun events, black tie affairs, but the highlight was definitely our

trip to New Orleans for the Special Event 2010. This educational event planning conference

and expo gave us inspiration to the tenth power! Never have we been more excited about

the many, new and innovative ideas that exist when it comes to planning events! For those of

you who may be new to RSVP Montgomery, we want to remind you that not only are we a bi-

monthly magazine, but we are also event planners. Our vast creativity and local relationships

give us design flexibility allowing you an indulgent event that falls into budget. Corporate events,

teen parties, social gatherings and receptions are given the same care in planning and execution,

making each guest experience original and new.

Spring is in the air, so put aside your grumpy spirit, come out of hibernation, and celebrate the

Long before social media dared to ask “what’s on our minds?”, social security required a different kind of post. Whether Certified Public Accountant or simply Certifiable, by April 15th all working Americans are required to declare our filing status. So with the deadline looming, there it is printed in black and white on my W-2; the words that define my category with the government and confirm my worst fear…. SINGLE and ZERO.

I realize this is just a tax category, but for those of us who once lived the life of a joint filer, you understand how it can double as a reminder of loss. Just like bad financial choices can impact wealth for years to come, so too can be said for our emotional state after a bad break- up.

What’s Your Status?

This was especially true for a friend of mine, when by sheer chance, found herself in conversation with the one whom she’d filed joint with years ago. His current status is married with dependents -which he may or may not claim. Just when she had written him off like a donation to goodwill, the return of years past was before her and questioning his current portfolio. As it turns out, he may have invested a little too quickly in something that looked better on paper and after having assumed the risk, he realizes his new relationship may never accrue to the sum amount he had planned.

For my friend, after many tax seasons apart, this was not a comfortable conversation but it gave her the opportunity to gain closure. Never discussing before, they were now reviewing the debits and credits of the time they

once shared and it seemed to reveal that inexperience caused them to pull their options before they matured. Reviewing, it’s possible when they were living those years, they may have missed something. At one time, maybe the balance sheet could have been reconciled, but given his current status and her desire to have a clear conscience if audited, the opportunity and conversation regarding were deemed officially closed.

While sometimes life may require us to review old files, we are better served to leave it in the past. It’s natural to wonder “what if”, but poring over a past relationship that yielded little in return will not move us forward. Instead, we should focus on the checks and balances that provide our spirit with a net gain.

Even if single and zero, the truth is that having to declare as part of a category is not such a bad thing. When done for the greater good, it allows us to identify with others who can empathize with our situation. Most brilliant of all is the fact that no matter what your status in life, updates are on the horizon. Whether it’s a career, relationship or any life decision for that matter, we have the power to change our status.

Just like on Facebook, some experiences warrant a “thumbs up”, and some we would rather delete out of existence. I recently read on someone’s post that our tax code is thicker than The Bible. Never having read either in its entirety, that tidbit explains a lot- like why I need an accountant and why I must have faith even when life’s plans don’t balance out. After all, America is the land of opportunity, so better to stay focused on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!

Besides, before we know it, another tax season will have come and gone. Either we pay or get something in return, but we have the freedom to enjoy the H & R Block party of single life!

Kayakingon the Coosa

Pack a lunch, pack a cooler and don’t forget the sunscreen. During the spring and summer, the water from Jordan Dam is regulated for paddling. This provides a lot of deep water, but there’s plenty of white water, including Moccasin Gap–a challenging Class III. Although they can appear intimidating, most of the rapids are manageable for novice-to-intermediate paddlers (if my 6 year old daughter made it you can too).

The flow most weekends is between 6,000 to 8,000 cfs. The banks are lined with old growth trees and stunning rock formations. It’s a wide river for the most part–300 feet in some areas, with rock bluffs and outcroppings. The banks are generally steep, thick in brush, and harbor a variety of snakes, but there are plenty of rock islands along the way to stop and have lunch or just relax.

You will have the option of a sit-on-top kayak or canoe for the trip. The kayak is preferable since it is self-bilging and easy to recover if/when you flip. A canoe, while faster and with a much greater cooler capacity, is much less nimble and weighs about 1500 lbs when full of river water, making it a little tough to handle. Don’t bother taking towels or anything that is not double bagged in Ziplocs down the river. Most sit-on-top kayaks have “dry storage” compartments, but to be technically correct, these should be called “slightly less wet storage” compartments. You will definitely want sunglasses, but the bottom of the Coosa is

littered with $150 glasses, so a stop at Wal-Mart on the way up is not a bad idea. Due to all the rocks, you definitely want to wear sandals or river shoes (not flip-flops) to protect your feet, and remember not to pet the snakes!

Your day starts out by getting suited up at one of the two excellent canoe & kayak liveries on the river where you can rent canoes, kayaks, and sit-on-tops: Coosa Outdoor Center (coosaoutdoorcenter.com) or Coosa River Adventures (coosariveradventures.com). Both outfits have several runs a day during the height of the season. Their experienced guides will give you excellent equipment and direction for a safe and enjoyable river trip.

If you have your own boat, both services will transport you and your boat for a nominal fee. Both services drop you off just below Jordan Dam, where you have to paddle for several hundred yards before you get to the point where the river really starts moving.

Fortunately for the less experienced, the river starts out with slower rapids in its first stage. You can take these on at a relaxed pace, allowing you to become acclimated to the river as you prepare for the heavier whitewater downstream. Take your time in this section, enjoy the scenery, and stop for lunch at one of the many rock islands. There are several cliffs suitable to test your fear of heights in this area, as well as several rope swings.

wave runners and with the added benefit

of getting a little exercise. Whether you

are a serious paddler or consider a kayak

as just the most practical way to get your

cooler downriver, the Coosa is for you.

About two thirds of the way through your paddle is Moccasin Gap. The Gap is by far the most well known feature of the Coosa, and it is the river’s only Class III rapid. This is one of the best places on the river to stop and take a break. You can hang out on the enormous rock in the center of the river that overlooks the rapids with the dozens of other paddlers that congregate there. From this vantage point you can watch the serious paddlers work up and down the gap, and watch the rest of us fools hang on for dear life as we shoot the gap. It’s a nice spot to figure out the best section of the rapid to run while you build the courage (liquid or otherwise) for making the run yourself. The faint of heart can also easily portage their boat right over the rock and avoid the most difficult part of the rapids entirely. Nevertheless, it is not nearly as difficult as it appears. I made it through with two six year olds and once, very unintentionally, backwards in my canoe.

For me, it is the highpoint of the river and I generally paddle back upstream and run the gap several times. As a final note, I would never (again) try to body surf through gap. I have it from a good source (my doctor) that this can lead to cracked ribs.

The remainder of your trip occurs on faster water than the first stage and wraps up pretty quickly. It only has a couple passages that, depending on conditions, could be considered Class II. The take out points for both services are clearly marked, and the guides are great about clearing the boats and getting you back to your vehicle. The average trip takes about 3.5 hours, but this depends entirely on your pace. All in all the Coosa is an easy to access and inexpensive little adventure.

There’s a new PRINCE in

Montgomery:


Developing districts may turn our heads for a moment, but our hearts are held with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, which for over twenty years has been Montgomery’s epicenter of culture and inspiration reaching far beyond local zip codes. To catch sight of the grounds for the first time touches something deep within, both magical and unforgettable. Perhaps that stirring of emotion is what compels us to return, where among its whimsy we have the freedom to discover more of ourselves--the park coercing even the least of fit to move, most weary dog to run, and where the nervous bachelor finds courage and boldly drops to his knee. For those who venture in, even more spectacular is the theater itself and in bright tradition, ASF has given us yet another reason to visit: a six-foot-three, blue-eyed ‘Prince’ named Nathan Hosner.

Nathan is currently playing the title role in ASF’s production of Shakespeare’s longest and most famous play: The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with a current Chicago address, the actor’s welcome mat has steadily adorned a Montgomery threshold while performing various key roles in ASF’s Othello, Three Musketeers and The Comedy of Errors.

In fact, it was during a Michigan performance of the latter where Nathan and Director Geoffrey Sherman’s paths first crossed. Not long after, Geoffrey and his wife Diana Van Fossen came to ASF where she would Direct The Comedy of Errors and he, with clever wit, became an unmistakable performer.Now a proud member of Actor’s Equity for 10 years, the school-

aged Hosner was an athlete and, before flexing his acting skills, was more likely engaging his muscles as part of the football and swim teams. As a matter of fact, his career origin sounds like a scene from Fox’s hit show Glee. “I was in the counselor’s office at school trying to get out of math class when the choir director came in and suggested I audition.” Nathan further explained, “until then, I didn’t even know I could sing.” His quest to ditch mathematics became a life-changing moment, and upon graduation, he continued his studies in classical theater “across the pond” at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Why classical Shakespeare?

I enjoy the richness of the language. It requires the firing of all cylinders, and I find that satisfying as an actor.

What attracts you to certain roles?

When a character speaks to me immediately and leaves me with the feeling that I want to understand more.

What makes your 17th century character relatable to modern audiences?

Hamlet is vulnerable from the beginning, coping with the loss of his father, his mother’s new marriage, and dealing with a relationship with his girlfriend at risk of being consumed by all the turmoil in his life. Audiences quickly relate to his inner-most feelings and will want to invest in his story.

While to some the language can seem complicated and off-putting, Hosner reminds that Shakespeare wrote to the common man and promises a performance to quickly engage our attention throughout the duration (roughly 2h: 45min including intermission). He loves the electricity of live audiences and the energy we bring. For those who secretly hold a thespian dream, an even more compelling reason to purchase a ticket is that Nathan expressed, “not until the arrival of the audience is the cast truly complete.”

Opportunity and the prestige of working for the 7th largest Shakespeare Festival brought him to Montgomery. He considers ours the “most beautiful theater he’s ever worked in,” especially flattering given his professional affiliations and stage performances in theater districts such as New York and Chicago.

The rehearsal and performance schedule is demanding, but Nathan finds time to delight in the local culture and cuisine of our Dixie Land, and says he can be found eating at his favorite, Hamburger King, a few times a week. (Fencing must burn it all off!) Since he plays guitar and electric bass guitar, it’s no surprise this Midwesterner has already toured the Hank Williams Museum. Next, he wants to tour the Rosa Parks Museum –maybe soon when his father comes to visit Montgomery for the first time. He also loves minor league baseball and last season took in 5 or 6 Biscuits games, so he’s looking forward to continuing that tradition this spring. In addition, he recently enjoyed an evening out at Alley BAR and says he really enjoys living here and witnessing how our city is reclaiming the downtown area and making Montgomery an even more attractive place to be.

Q. Given the current economic climate, how has Cagle and Luster adjusted to the current demand for new homes?

A. While we agree the building market has changed over the past fewyears there are many great opportunities for people who want to buy a new home. Mortgage rates are at an all time low and tax incentives for first time and move up homebuyers is great. We also have turned a lot of our attention towards energy efficiency in homes. Although, energy efficiency devices are not always the least expensive applications in homes it pays for itself in the long run.

Q. You have built in so many communities. How do you approach the different demands of these communities?

A. We build the same quality homes whether it be for first timehomebuyers, move up homebuyers, or empty nesters. For each community, we meet the needs of the design for that particular area and incorporate that into what the homeowner wants. A mong the litany of accolades and accomplishments for the downtown revitalization, one can now add a new, exciting one: it finds a budding TV star among

its midst. That nascent reality-show celebrity is one Justin Gaines, Executive Chef for SaZa Serious Italian Food. The source of his current fame is a winning stint on the Food Network’s hit series, “Chopped,” in which Justin bested three other amateur up-and-coming chefs to claim the $10,000 prize. During the show (hosted by Ted Allen of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”), contestants were challenged to turn mystery everyday ingredients into delightful new meals. After each course, one contestant was eliminated or “chopped,” thus the name. The last man standing was Justin, an accomplishment that is a source of pride for not only himself, but everyone associated with SaZa. In celebration of his accomplishment, SaZa organized a gala charity dinner on January 19th to watch the premiere airing of the episode live and enjoy an assortment of incredible culinary delights that only SaZa can provide. Tickets were $50 and the contribution of one canned food item, to benefit the Montgomery Area Food Bank and We Are Family Foundation, a New York-based organization whose vital work with children worldwide is the life’s passion of owner Joe DiMaggio Jr., who sits on its board. Fortunate attendees found that their charitable contributions were more than rewarded by a dizzying array of dishes that seem to arrive, one after the other, with wonderful new tastes to try until even the heartiest of eaters was both satiated and delighted.

Seeing the horrible images of the disaster in Haiti and its consequent ramifications has driven many in the River Region to open their hearts and pocket books. In an effort

to lend a hand of their own were AlleyBAR, Dreamland, and RSVP Montgomery, banding together with several musicians to help aid Haitian relief.

AlleyBAR hosted the event to support the Partners in Health Haitian Relief program, an organization which has worked on the ground in Haiti for over two decades. Financial support is desperately needed to aid those affected by the recent catastrophe, and the Boston-based group of health care professionals have worked to bring modern medical care to these suffering people.

Special guests at the event were local heroes Anne & Stephanie Reynolds, the founders of HIPHaiti (Humanitarians Initiating Progress in Haiti). These brave ladies were in Haiti providing their support to a school in the northern part of country when the quake happened, and they recently returned to coordinate relief here.

The event, held in the “Back Alley,” saw the serving of traditional Haitian food prepared by Preston Williams, along with the world famous Dreamland BBQ. Signature cocktails of Haitian inspired dark rum were on offer along with AlleyBAR’s own favorite blends. Continuous live entertainment kept the

place jumping all night, with great sets by Jonathan Bloom, Erica & the Soulshine Band, the Vegabonds, and 3AM. Haitian flags were displayed throughout the bar for patrons to take home to remember to keep the people of Haiti in their thoughts and prayers. All told, it was a great event, for an even greater cause!

HARRIET’S RETURN By Eddie Spangler

Harriet’s Return graced the Octagon stage of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival during the month of February. In addition to the regular shows, there we seven additional “schoolfest” programs that were 100 percent sold out. The audiences that had the privilege to watch Karen Jones Meadows’ one woman play about the legendary life of Harriet Tubman witnessed a provocative and inspirational tale about the infinite power of the human spirit. The two act performance begins in a modern day restaurant, where the spirit of Harriet Tubman returns to take us back in time. We are introduced to a young Araminta Ross, who is growing up as an abused and often beaten slave. We feel her sorrows and joys as she soon becomes “growed up,” discovers love, marries John Tubman, and eventually escapes to freedom in Philadelphia to end act one. With the ability to seamlessly shift among 30 characters, Ms. Jones Meadows creates the illusion that there are multiple performers on stage at any given time. The audience eagerly anticipated her every move during the active second act as Harriet travels back and forth across the underground railroad to outwit the enemy while freeing slaves. Later, she becomes a General in the Union Army that leads a raid on Harpers Ferry and then finds a home to help indigent former slaves. The dramatic conclusion of the play featured Harriet at one of the many lectures she gave in the latter part of her life. An old and feeble, yet remarkably eloquent Harriet spoke directly to the audience to remind us that each person matters and that we all can make a difference. After receiving a boisterous standing ovation, Ms. Jones Meadow remained on stage for an impromptu meet and greet, signing programs for numerous appreciative fans. Harriet’s Return is a marvel in modern day storytelling.

BRIAN REGANBy Blue Sullivan

When a performer at the top of his field comes to Montgomery to ply his considerable talents, it is a cause for unique celebration. Such was the case when one of the biggest and best stand-up comics of his generation, Brian Regan, came to the River Region and gave attendees over an hour of non-stop, uproarious laughter. Hot off the release of two best-selling DVDs, Brian riffed in quick succession on the every-day annoyances and minor outrages of modern life with wonderful wit, family-friendly verbiage, and a masterful command of his craft. Heralded to the stage with a roar of fans’ affection, Brian undoubtedly won over the many potential new converts in the packed audience, then gave the faithful a smattering of his most popular bits in the encore—not the least of which was an extended bit about a particularly humiliating childhood spelling bee that saw fans chanting out set ups to his most famous punch-lines. In a word—awesome.

LOOK:“Splendor in the Grass”Film, Released in 1961

As mentioned in the intro, your humble

columnist has a reputation for being

a world-class cynic, especially when it

comes to seemingly mawkish, four-hanky

melodramas such as this film from 1961.

Set in 1920s Kansas, the film follows

two teenagers in love (the stunningly

beautiful couple of Natalie Woods and

Warren Beatty, the latter in one of his first

starring roles), and how class differences

and puritanical sexual repression converge to destroy their lives. The parallels

between this and “Romeo and Juliet” are obvious, and while the end of this film

is less overtly “tragic” than Shakespeare’s famous play, the haunting melancholy

of the final scene of this amazing film is such that it resides in the memory long

after you’ve seen it. Girls: be prepared to cry buckets. And guys: be prepared to

work extra hard not to do likewise.

CAREY OWENS, JR.

For members, you may first recognize him from the club--Sam’s Club. That was shortly after Carey Owens Jr. earned his accounting degree from Fisk University and where he first held a part time position with Alltel in the kiosk of this warehouse giant. Sixteen dedicated years later, receiving numerous promotions, he is currently the Retail Sales Manager with AT&T and is based out of the store at Eastchase. Owens says his Grandmother, Mrs. Helen F. Kennedy, was the biggest influence on his life. She was the guidance counselor for many years at Goodwyn Junior High School and expected nothing less than the best effort that she herself gave to her work. Carey enjoys serving as a role model for younger colleagues and loves the chance his job provides to influence and shape careers. His community involvement includes Christmas in April, Emerge School Clean-Up Service Project, and The Buddy Walk benefitting children with Downs Syndrome. Spare time will find him on the golf course, listening to music, traveling and watching the History Channel. He loves that Montgomery is the birthplace of the civil rights movement; it is this rich history that he wants to pass on. Much like his grandmother inspired him, Carey and his wife Dawn hope to do the same for their three sons: Carey Lee III, Connor Lofton, and Evan Cai.


MARLA M. TERRANOVA

The Biscuits boast more than power hitting outfielders and flame throwing pitchers. Assistant General Manager Marla Terranova has played a major role in the success of Montgomery’s professional baseball team. In fact, Marla was the first staff member on the ground in 2003 when the team first began captivating our community. After serving in several positions successfully with the team, Marla was promoted to Assistant General Manager in 2008. A graduate of Central Michigan University, Marla first worked for the Lansing Lugnuts. There, she quickly developed a passion for ballparks and the atmosphere they create for fans as they enjoy the experience the staff works hard to create. For Montgomery, Marla has enjoyed seeing how the downtown revitalization has made it a destination and focal point. She is involved with several community groups and is a member of both EMERGE Montgomery and the Executive Board for the Landmarks Foundation. She spends her free time on trips home to Michigan with her family. Most exciting is that soon her title will change to “wife,” as she is engaged to Tripp Vickers of Montgomery.

SUZANNA WASSERMAN

A self-described introvert, Suzanna Conley Wasserman enjoys an occupation with exciting demands that are far from shy. A 2005 graduate of Huntingdon College, she is now Program Coordinator for Leadership Development at the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. Suzanna credits this job for transforming her from a follower into a leader. Helping her transform herself was with the help and support of friends, colleagues, and most importantly her parents. Suzanna says the best part of her work is the unique opportunity to contribute to the development of her hometown. She approaches each day with the goal to assist in developing and maintaining young leaders in the River Region. Along with her work with EMERGE Montgomery and Leadership Montgomery, she is a member of the Junior League of Montgomery, a board member for the American Advertising Federation, an Account Representative for the River Region United Way, and acts as Division Representative for the World Adult Kickball Association. However, her biggest “kick” is off the field, when she sees the positive affect her work has on the community. For fun, she is currently designing hair accessories. She and her long-time boyfriend, Jeremy Mitchell, are the proud ‘parents’ of a 3 year-old Pomeranian named Coco.

JOSH MCFALL

As Director of Bridge Builders Montgomery, Josh McFall ironically builds leaders that we just can’t get over! He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of North Alabama and went on to earn his Master’s in Communication Studies from Auburn University in 2009. Both his personal and professional life share the same approach, and he has a motto of four things he does every day: lead, think, connect, and share. The mission of Bridge Builders is to develop among high school students a group of future leaders who will lay aside individual, social, economic, and cultural differences and work for the benefit of all. Not only has Bridge Builders allowed Josh to put his training and experience into practice, he also influences local college students as a Communications instructor for both AUM and Huntingdon College. Bridge Builders has positively impacted the lives of over 200 young people, and under McFall’s leadership, it was awarded Volunteer Organization of the Year in 2009 by the Family Guidance Center. In addition, he co-founded a fundraising effort to build a school in Angola Africa called TheIronBowlisBetter.com, and Josh also serves as the Montgomery Area President-Elect of the University of North Alabama Alumni Association. He likes that Montgomery is a metropolitan area with a small town feel, and though moving here as an ‘outsider’, he has quickly connected with our wonderful community.

KELLI WISE

While Lady Justice is blind, it’s clear to see why Judge Kelli Wise has her eyes set on a higher seat. Prior to being sworn in to the bench in 2001, she allowed the bittersweet loss of her first run for statewide office to benchmark the consequent campaign that heralded her to victory, making Judge Wise the youngest woman elected to sit on an Alabama appellate court. Since her election, she has prevailed twice more and currently serves as the Presiding Judge on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. She has written and reviewed over 20,000 cases, ranging from misdemeanor to capital murder, and knows the legal opinions she releases are more than just writings on paper. Her community involvement includes an active membership in Junior League of Montgomery and volunteer work with Teen Court and Child Project. Judge Wise says her husband, Arthur, has been her strongest advocate, and she considers their daughter, Hanah -Mathis, their greatest accomplishment. Her daughter also gives her daily inspiration to strive to be the kind of woman she hopes her little girl will become. With each strike of the gavel, she has satisfaction in knowing her authority plays a part in seeing justice done for Alabamians. Now she hopes to take her experience to the Alabama Supreme Court.

JESSICA METHIER

Jessica Methier credits her career launch to one thing – persistence. Upon the encouragement of a woman who worked for an NBC affiliate in Georgia, she applied for a sales position and followed up every week for two months before getting the call that she had the job. That determination, and her undergraduate studies at Auburn University and Masters of Business Administration from Troy University, led her to her current position as Group Sales Manager for the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center. Her primary role is to promote and encourage new conventions, trade shows and meetings to the city of Montgomery, including Hyundai and their 2010 dealers Meeting, AFLAC’s Sales kickoff and State Farm’s Education Forum, to name but a few. Throughout her life, Jessica’s father has taught her that, when faced with hard decisions, it is essential to have a plan and move forward with no regrets. Her mother taught her the importance of laughter and how to make it all balance together. In her spare time, Jessica also impacts the community through her affiliation with the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce.

The dream of providing great Southern barbeque is the challenging culinary vocation of Bob Parker, Operating Partner for Dreamland BBQ. After achieving a Bachelor’s degree in History from Birmingham-Southern, Bob found his special calling at 24, when he became General Manager of the Birmingham Dreamland. He credits the guiding influence of John Welch in nurturing a commitment to excellence in both food and customer service. “John taught me to do things the Dreamland way that would have made the founder, John “Big Daddy” Bishop, proud.” Carrying that great tradition to the wonderful downtown revitalization was no small task in thought or effort, Bob notes. “The idea of putting the Dreamland downtown came to me about 2 1/2 years ago. I met with Jerry Kyser and Kyle Kyser, our landlord and eventual partner, to discuss locating the store at the entrance to the Alley. Then, when we started raising capital, the economy fell apart. It was hit or miss for a while, but we made it through.” Bob credits the support and vision of his business partner, Richard Younger, and his wife, Ashley, as being essential to the restaurant’s success. “People were skeptical about Dreamland doing well after the bad experience at the Atlanta Highway store. I was confident that God was behind what we were trying to do, and that the city of Montgomery would see the difference and give us another chance.” This confidence and commitment has paid immediate dividends, as Dreamland has become one of the cornerstones of the famed Alley development. His immediate rapport and earned sense of trust with his staff has fostered a great familial vibe at work. At home, Bob and his wife enjoy three children—Andrew, Megan, and Robert.

From Honolulu, Hawaii to Hooper Academy in Hope Hull, Laura Hester said “Aloha” to the Montgomery area when her family returned here in 1999. She then went on to Auburn University to study Communications but yearned to relive the laid back resort-lifestyle of her adolescence. Upon earning her degree, she accepted a job leading to her current position as the Director of Member Services at Wynlakes Golf and Country Club. Always energetic, innovative and committed, Laura has fulfilled many roles throughout her tenure, including Pool Manager, directing the Sitter Service, and website development. Her ever-evolving slate of challenges includes club membership and marketing, managing the Wynlakes website, and overseeing the luxurious pool and spa with its variety of aquatics programs. She thrives on interaction with her members and helping them reach their goals. Outside of work, Laura is just as committed, serving as Vice President for the Junior Executive Board of the Montgomery Metro American Cancer Society. Laura credits her parents and grandparents for inspiring her and instilling in her the power of a positive attitude, and the importance of embracing with passion the many things to do in Montgomery. A Youth Director at Hope Hull United Methodist Church, Laura embraces her opportunity to mold young minds, and in summer, she additionally teaches swimming to both kids and adults. Yet her favorite time of year is every fall when she gathers with family and friends to cheer on her Auburn Tigers!

There’s nothing like the real thing, baby! This LAMP High School graduate and former intern at the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta, Amber Bradford Buchanan now enjoys success as a Professional Healthcare Representative for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Her role is to provide physicians in the central Alabama area with up to date information on life saving medications for their patients. Buchanan feels the best part of her job is hearing about the effectiveness of the medications she promotes, whose benefits patients experience both in the local community and worldwide. She is involved in multiple civic organizations and holds a place on the Emerge Montgomery Governing Council. In addition, she is currently establishing a career mentoring program for undergraduate Delta Sigma Theta Sorority members to benefit from alumni in the same career field. While she has an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and an MBA from Auburn Montgomery, her house is definitely not divided! She is married to Keith Buchanan, whom she first met at the University of Alabama during orientation. RSVP: You have enjoyed quite a bit of success in your young career. When did you decide to become a musician?

Dustin: I started at a very young age in church choir, and also roaming off through a local music store while my mom took piano lessons. That led into me performing in junior high chorus and an Acapella quartet. RSVP: When did you start performing?

Dustin: I fronted my first band when i was 16. The band was pretty eclectic. We covered a lot of Incubus songs, but also played our original songs. This is where I started sinking my teeth into the songwriting process and also learning the art of performing a live show. I moved to Nashville on a golf scholarship at Lipscomb University and began playing on Lower Broadway and Demonbreun Street while I was attending college. That turned into me getting booked at the SEC schools, which allowed me to focus completely on honing my songwriting. RSVP: What musicians do you consider to be your biggest influences?

Dustin: Growing up, my dad was a huge country radio fan. Mom was more of an oldies fan. Naturally what they listened to is what I got to listen to for the most part. As far as artists go I consider George Strait, Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Doobie Brothers all big influences. RSVP: How about current artists? Do you have any favorites?

Dustin: The current artists I’m listening to or “what’s in my truck,” are George Strait, Miranda Lambert, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, The Steeldrivers, and Chris Knight. On my Ipod this very second is Chris Knight’s “Framed.”

Reading the comments from elated fans on Dustin Lynch’s MySpace page (www.myspace.com/dustinlynchcountry), one gets a sense of just how much his music touches them. There are countless comments from fans on his page, many from those who have recently seen the man in action. Grateful college kids recount amazing shows all over the southeast—Knoxville, Starkville, Birmingham, to name just a handful--and they thank the artist for their new favorite songs from his catalogue, such as “Your Whiskey,” “Leaving Coming,” and “Moment Before A Lifetime.” With his unique blend of country and rock, Dustin is quickly leaving an imprint wherever he goes, and this commitment to live performance is paying dividends in other arenas, as he is currently gearing up for his first studio recording in Nashville. RSVP was fortunate to speak to this rising young star about his career, influences, and bright future.

RSVP: How about outside of music? Any artists that influence what you do?

Dustin: I’d have to say the artist I pull from the most is God. I really find myself drawing from different scenery and places when creating. RSVP: That’s an interesting way to look at it—God as an artist. That must mean He’s a big influence on your songwriting process as well…

Dustin: Definitely. I like to spontaneously take drives out into the country and soak in as much as i can. Countryside/people/situations that i pass/in the top of a tree hunting or fishing, all influence what I write. This really gets my gears turning and is where a lot of ideas come to me. It could be any conversation or even this interview…something someone says that sparks an idea. RSVP: Speaking of songwriting, what recordings are you working on?

Dustin: Currently I’m writing and recording songs in preparation for my first studio album for one of the hottest labels in Nashville. I’ll be periodically adding new songs to my MySpace and Facebook fan pages so find me!! RSVP: How does touring/live performance influence your work?

Dustin: Great question!!! Touring and performing live not only inspire song ideas, but allow me to take a new song and test drive it on a live crowd to see if it connects or not. RSVP: What is your favorite live experience, where and why?

Dustin: It’s tough to really nail down a single favorite, but one that tends to stick out is up in Knoxville. We were playing a show, and we started into a new song of mine, and I look out and see the crowd singing along to it. That’s the biggest reward as a songwriter and it will never be something i take for granted.

AlleyBAR is located in The ALLEY in downtown Montgomery’s historic entertainment district and provides the nucleus for a growing vibrant nightlife in the city. It occupies the ground floor of an 1881 grain warehouse directly adjacent to the Renaissance Hotel and Spa, Montgomery Performing Arts Center and RiverWalk Stadium. Although the VIP lounge areas are impressive and the outdoor terraces very appealing, one of the more talked about features of AlleyBAR is the glass-enclosed frozen shot room, where friends gather to put on fur coats and sample various shots of pre-mixed and imported liquors served from ice shot glasses in near freezing temperatures.

FOOD & DRINK

AlleyBAR has over 50 different martinis to choose from, the world famous frozen shot room, a variety of over 100 high gravity, imported and domestic beers and the undisputed “quirkiest” menu in town. Order from a unique menu featuring light fare such as sandwiches, paninis, chips / dips and olive / cheese trays.

For those who like to walk on the adventurous side, the smoked oysters from Alaska, Vienna sausages, canned easy cheese, PBJs and fried bologna might be “up their alley.”

ENTERTAINMENT

AlleyBAR has live music every Wednesday through Saturday night. Since opening in June 2009 over 70 different acts have performed in the main room or on the big stage in “Back Alley”. Among the groups are some of the South’s most popular entertainers representing almost every genre of music from blues to rock to big band and country.

PRIVATE EVENTS

AlleyBAR’s “BackAlley” concert hall and special event venue connecting to the main room is a 5000 square foot “party room” and is perfect for hosting your private event or charity fundraiser. “BackAlley” is available for private events at off-peak times and dates and comes fully equipped with tables, chairs, linens, catering, bar and the big screen projection and sound system.

AlleyBAR’s special events coordinator can assist with the planning and execution of your event, including menu selection, entertainment, signage, credentials, promotional items and flower arrangements.
