Newsletter No. 56 February 2016

Well we are already a month into the year and
December is but a memory. Not so much so that we
shouldn’t take the time to acknowledge the great time
enjoyed by our members and visiting bowlers from
far afield who participated in two of our biggest
events held each year as we wound down for the end
of the bowling calendar in 2015.
Congratulations Hamper Day 2015
There were teams from many local and regional
Clubs attending 2015 Hamper Day, Open Fours
Carnival. When it came down to the Semi-Finals
there were three Canberra Club teams and one
from City vying for the first and second position.
After some very good, friendly bowling, two
teams of four men prevailed. Congratulations to
Greg Pickup, Glen Freebody, Mark Dulihanty,
and Barry Freebody on their great win over the
team of Greg Bourke, Peter Fardell, Warwick
Peirce, and Ray Brewer.

Break-up Day 2015
The break-up day, on a very warm Wednesday,
16th December saw over 52 bowlers and at
least 15 others attending the lunch on the day.
The bowlers getting to know each other when
sticks were drawn for team positions, followed
by the normal socializing in the club house over
Christmas fare. For some members it was the
first time to put a face to a name that they may
have heard or read in the newspaper. There was
also Santa, who knew them all, naughty or nice.
Everyone enjoyed the fantastic feast of goodies
which was eagerly devoured.

atmosphere
On the day, instead of presents, donations were
collected and there was a grand sum of $515.00.
This was donated to Pegasus, our chosen
charity for 2015. Thank you to everyone for
making the day a great success, especially the
ladies who set up the tables and the food
banquet, which is always as great as it is varied.

Christmas Carnival 2015
Perhaps the biggest event each year at our Club
is the Christmas Carnival, held for four days
between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. The
36th
Annual Carnival last month didn’t
disappoint. It was possibly one of the better
Carnivals we have enjoyed for a while, relaxed
and friendly. Teams came from all over, one
team travelling in from Braidwood each day, and
the feedback was very positive on all fronts. It
was hearting to see that there were teams made
up from different clubs and a lot of family
combinations enjoying the ambience that only
our club can offer in the middle of the Nation’s
Capital. Because of the hot weather, the bar
taking also brought a smile to David Kimber’s
face. Again, thanks to the organisers, helpers,
and bar staff for making the event such a great
success.

ACT EVENTS
Computer Tip this month
Welcome to 2016 and over last year’s silly season
which raised a lot of money for the club there are a
few people to thank. Especially the Ladies that did
the catering it was amazing to see how multiple
groups were catered for on one day without missing
a beat. Speaking of beats quite a few of you also
enjoyed Mick's Musical BBQ during that time which
also resulted in a lot of questions on digital music.
Most modern cars these days come with multi-media
capabilities so it's easy to carry around your whole
CD library in the palm of your hand. This is usually
in the form of a USB stick drive or on your smart
phone or even on a SD storage card. The problem is
how do we get our music on there in the first place.
The simple answer to that is get yourself a MP3
ripper. A good free-ware piece of software that does
this job is called CDEX. Once installed you can put
in your music CD into your computer it will find the
album name from the internet and title all the songs
for you and you can then proceed to convert that
audio CD into a MP3 files. With storage these days
being cheap make sure you encode that conversion at
the highest possible settings 320/ 44 kps which
pretty much matches the quality of the CD itself.
Unless you have perfect hearing very few people can
pick the difference in audio quality. In short this
process compresses the audio file by discarding
frequencies outside the normal human hearing range
into roughly 10-15 percent of its original file size on
CD. That way you can fit about 5-6 CD's of music
onto one single CD of MP3's Link to software :
http://cdex.mu/download
There is also software available on the bowls
computer to do this job as well, I have installed
it to save in a folder called "Music Rip" on the
Network drive. Just have a USB stick handy so
you can copy the files it creates from the hard
drive. Keep in mind this process is not instant, a
complicated algorithm is used by the computer
to convert each song so each CD might take 15-
20 mins. The alternative is to grab an Itunes or
Google play card from any local supermarket
and download your music in that format to begin
with. However there is no need to pay for your
own music twice so ripping your CD collection
might take a bit of time but it's yours to keep
long after the CD becomes unplayable. For
those of you who don't have MP3 playing ability
in your car don't worry there is a cheap solution
for you as well. Just go onto Ebay and search
for "MP3 Player FM Transmitter" these usually
range from $20 - $40 with the more elaborate
ones connecting to your smartphone via
Bluetooth. They just plug into the car cigarette
lighter socket and broadcast via a unused FM
frequency on your car radio. In short there are
lots of ways to play digital music, from your TV,
DVD, Smart-phone, Car, Ipod, Tablet, Computer
etc. So it's convenience far outweighs that of a
music CD and the added bonus of not having to
worry about scratches.
