Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery 1 Spring 2019 PRESIDENTS SPRING MESSAGE Dear Members, It has been a long winter across the country with better weather here now or on its way depending on where you live. The Royal College exams are over, and we will have many new members joining us in the OtlHNS/ENT “club”. As these new graduates move on to jobs and fellowships, the tie that will bind them together over the next 30 years of their career is the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. These new graduates, as those of us before them, will reside throughout the country and across the globe. Their compass will point towards Canada and our Annual Meeting their OtlHNS/ENT home base. What better reason to attend the Annual Meeting than to meet up with those who you have spent many an hour with doing what you always dreamed of doing professionally including many of those who mentored and motivated you along the way. Some of this Mentorship and Motivation took place with Music playing in the operating room. At the same time, attending the meeting is an opportunity to learn new things and enjoy down time with friends and family away from the hustle and bustle of your daily routine. The meeting this year is in beautiful Alberta, in the city of Edmonton June 1-4. Take a moment now and register for the meeting. Get involved, stay involved, be involved and bring the family. Vince Lin has put together a fabulous, varied, educational scientific program. Our three Plenary Speakers should not be missed; Dr. Charles Limb, Major Jameel Janjua and Dr. Nadine Caron will each captivate you with their presentations. I am personally happy to see that the Celebrating Our Own Seriescontinues. There will be a pre- conference CMPA workshop and an opportunity to obtain Category 3 credits. There truly is something for everyone. Thank you to our corporate partners with a special shout-out to our four Platinum Sponsors: Oticon Medical, Medtronic, Stryker and Bristol Myers Squibb. Eddie Eksteen and Donna Carter our local arrangements committee chairs have rolled out the red carpet with a great social program! Also check out the Societys website when you register to see what Edmonton has to offer. You will not be disappointed. Our annual meeting is a tribute to our success as a specialty. GLOBAL HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP

I would like to highlight this program which is open to all RESIDENTS in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery programs in Canada. Two awards of $1,000 are given annually to successful residents travelling to a low- or middle-income country, or an under-serviced area in Canada. The scholarships specifically will support travel expenses incurred for the purposes of furthering research in an under-resourced setting. The successful resident will be expected to submit a report to the President of the Fund following completion of the trip and/or submit their research results for presentation at the annual meeting. To apply, contact the Society’s office at [email protected] and an application will be emailed to you or visit Global Health Scholarship. THANK-YOU

Our sincerest thanks go to all those members who have donated to the Fund this year. Donations from the membership are crucial to the sustainability of the Fund’s various programs including the Canadian Fellowship Award, the Mini-fellowship and the Global Outreach programs. We hope you will continue to give through the “Circle of Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Donors". Each year, contributions of $1000 will be acknowledged with a certificate and a special lapel pin will be presented at the annual meeting to those who have donated $5000 or more.

NEW You can now donate to the COHNS Fund online using Canada Helps

For those who prefer to give using a cheque or VISA please download a donation card. A tax receipt will be issued for all donations over $25.

IN MEMORIAM

DR. DESMOND JOSEPH IRELAND 1929 - 2018

Dr. Desmond (Des) Joseph Ireland passed away at the Victoria Hospital on September 15, 2018 at the age of 88. He was predeceased by his mother Aileen Kate Ireland (nee Britton), father Clarence Ireland, brothers-in-law Roy Houghton and Michael Wiley, sister-in-law Patricia Wiley, and great-grandson Archie Mosis. He will be greatly missed by both his Canadian and Australian families.

In his quiet and humble way, he gave strict instructions "not to write an obituary that would boast about his accomplishments" but to "make sure it included familial information needed for genealogical purposes". He had a passion for a good mystery and along with his scientific research abilities, became a "genealogical guru". In his retirement, he spent hours at his computer sharing e-mails with his sister and others from around the world, solving pieces of ancestral puzzles dating back as far as the 1300s. The only thing that gave him greater pleasure was travelling with, or sharing a meal out with his wife Donna, or learning of, and sharing in, his grandchildren's accomplishments and successes.

Des was born in Sydney, Australia and know from a very young age he could become a physician. In 1958 he left Australia to further his training in Chicago. A year later he settled in Brandon, Manitoba and set-up a private clinical practice in Otolaryngology. He subsequently made the move to Winnipeg in 1975 to carry on his clinical

practice and later became Head of the Department of Otolaryngology. He very much enjoyed his time teaching medical students/residents, as well as time spent doing vestibular research with his colleagues.

He touched the lives of many patients, students and colleagues. Over the years he received many awards (of which he doesn't wanted mentioned) but his final distinction prior to his retirement was that of Professor Emeritus in 1998.

DR. TED BOJANOWSKI 1953 - 2018

Dr. Ted Bojanowski passed away suddenly on April 25th, 2018 at the age of sixty-four. He is survived by wife Belle, son Nicholas and daughter Krystina, father Victor, sister Victoria, her three children Katie, Sean and Natalie, and predeceased by his mother, Anna.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Ted earned his B.Eng. (electrical) and M.Eng. (biomedical), as well as his MD at McMaster University, before moving to Vancouver to complete his residency in otolaryngology at UBC. He was a man of many talents, and boundless ideas; he was an avid photographer, crab fisherman, salmon-smoker, caviar-maker, and all-around handyman. He was active in numerous professional and community projects, including BC Otolaryngology Society and the Society of Specialist Physicians and Surgeons, serving as president for both. He also served on the Board of Governors of Meadowridge School, and the Emergency Services Committee in the Village of Belcarra, which was his home for twenty-nine years. He worked as a visiting specialist in Whitehorse, Yukon. An avid hunter and fisherman, he made many friends and was always good for stimulating conversation. We will miss his quick wit, ready smile and keen intellect.
