    The Next Level ContinuesProverbs 11:30 - II Corinthians 9:6-15 - I Corinthians 15:58

A Monthly Publication of the Canaan Baptist Church

Grace and peace unto you!"Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but

encouraging one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching." -

    Hebrews 10:25 (NIV)

Experiencing difficult moments in our lives alone, can be an uphill battle in our walk

of faith. It's harder to smile as we hide struggles and trials from our friends. The

feeling of having the whole world on our shoulders can make us feel weak. Obstacles

become stumbling blocks in our lives as we strive to shake off the discomfort.

Just as we are ready to quit this portion of life's race, we are reminded that God is withus. The many blessings God has bestowed upon us begins to creep into our minds.

Remembering other moments such as these and how God has worked them out for us,

brings smiles to our faces. The memories of God's grace and mercies, gives us

strength. Re-living the words of hope we gave to others, who may have felt as we did, connects our faith in God.

We, who believe in Christ, are blessed beyond measure. When we hang on to ourfaith, nothing can separate us from God. Trouble don't last always when we surround

ourselves with other believers and allow them to carry us in faith. Remember, notgiving up is the key to rebuilding our faith.

Let's hold our heads up high and encourage one another. It can make the difference

between giving up or going on because "quitters never win and winners never quit".

As the song says, "Be encouraged, no matter what's going on......"

    Stay Strong!

    Unshattered Faith

"Lord, during my darkest hours, I lean on you. You are all that I have. At theend of the day, God is still in control." - Sybrina Fulton"My heart is broken, my faith is not." - Tracy Martin

Reflecting on these words, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, parents of slain teenager, Trayvon Martin, have been trusting inGod to heal and comfort their grieving hearts.

In February 2012, their son, Trayvon, was shot and killed afterbeing accosted by a neighborhood watchman in Sanford,Florida. After hearing the news of her son's death, Sybrina criedand prayed to God. Since that day, she hasn't stopped talking toGod.

Although the relentless media coverage and high profiledmurder trial was often saturated with negative comments abouttheir son, the parents remained steadfast in their faith.

Like David in 1 Samuel 30:6, Trayvon's parents' faith in Godempowered them with strength and courage. They continued totrust God every day, despite the fact their innocent teenage sonwas dead and his killer lives as a free man.

As believers, it is this strength that shows beyond tears, pain andloss. Knowing God is in control, and that He is the answer inour brokenness, allows us the peace within. A peace that waswitnessed when Trayvon's parents and family went to church onSunday morning after the verdict.

To this day, their faith in God remains strong and affirms theirbelief that Trayvon is in heaven. "David strengthened himself in The

    Lord, his God." - 1 Samuel 30:6

progression and growth as a church, but that is not to say that

we have forgotten about our roots or our mission, keeping in

mind that while we are in a time of great change, we have not

forgotten that our purpose is ultimately to serve the master and

to impact the human condition. So in this time of change, wemust make sure that we embrace the change knowing that it is

    for the good.

    Canaan is a church that

    has truly progressed with

    the times. We have

    recognized that in a

    world with endlesstechnological innovation,

    technology is essential

for success. One ministry which keeps the church current

with the times is the Audio and Visual Ministry led by

Rev. Michael James. This ministry does so much more

than providing sound and visuals for Sunday services. It

also keeps Canaans members informed with continuous

updates of information to the churchs website. Whether

you are looking for the time and date of a future event or

just curious about the church itself, the first place you

might look for information is on Canaans website; here, you will find announcements, pastors blog, and even

lists of the ministries present at Canaan. And, lets not

forget that on every fourth Sunday of the month

Canaans services can be seen on Comcasts channel 28

at 10:30 AM. It can be said that by providing these

services, the Audio and Visual ministry at Canaan helps

the churchs light to shine brightly, so as to continue

    attracting new members.

However, with the church attracting as many new

members as it has, there comes the need for other

necessary ministries. The Security Ministry helps toensure that peace and order is maintained during the

many events at Canaan. The Security Ministry, led by

Elder Alfred Hatchett, does an amazing job keeping the

Security Ministry current and ever present in the church.

Members of Canaan can be confident in the fact that all

Canaan events are safe and orderly thanks to the Security

    Ministry.

The word says, For we have come to share in Christ, if

indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the

end (Hebrews 3:14). Here at Canaan we believe in

"Dr. Christopher A. Bullock and the Canaan

Baptist Church are happy to announce the receipt of aDepartment of Services for Children, Youth andTheir Families ~ 2013 Alternative Community Grantto help launch our Youth Mentoring, Leadership

Development and Entrepreneurial (YMLE) ministry. The grants were awarded to nonprofit and faith based

    organizations for community programming

    activities.

YMLE is in part a revival of Canaans youth

mentoring ministry, extended to focus on leadershipdevelopment and exposure to entrepreneurial careers. The ministry is designed to help build and reinforce

healthy self-esteem and uncover those things that are

    contrary.

YMLE is based on the knowledge that thereare deafening appeals to young people to self-destructor to destroy. They are surrounded by social

pressures that can lure them in the wrong direction.

These influences are non-discriminate. Youth in thechurch can be as vulnerable as those who are not. Tocounteract the disparaging appeals, the ministry

sounds the greater appeal from Christ that we aremore than conquerors through him who loved

    us (Romans 3.37).

Our goal is to recruit thirty young peopleconsisting of two groups of fifteen, ages 12-13 and 14

-15 for the first year of the ministry. As per our

grant, participation will include Canaan and non-Canaan youth. With the help of Youth and YoungAdult Ministry leaders, recruitment has begun and

will continue until the goal is met. The anticipatedstart ofYMLE in September involves orientation for

    families and a kick-off gathering.

Canaan members are being asked to serve asmentors and lead entrepreneur workshop. Mentor

training is included as an integral part of the ministryand will occur before mentor pairing begins. If youare interested in mentoring or leading workshops,

please see Reverend Dorian Mendez-Vaz or contact

her at [email protected] more information.

not know the signs and symptoms to look out for. Knowing

the early signs and symptoms can help distinguish betweennormal forgetfulness and something more serious, and let

you know when it's time to see your doctor. If you are a
