By Lauren Farrow  As voters headed to the ballot box this month, they were met with local candidate’s smiling faces on placards and how-to- vote cards. But behind the scenes, rival candidates had been involved in a political skirmish. Firing the opening salvos was Independent candidate Michael Cantali, who has often been out-  voted and out-numbered by Labor and Liberal councillors in the last four years. Mr Cantali said he was concerned about a $10,000 trip taken by Liberal Cr Michael Megna, former Cr Tony Fasanella, Mayor Angelo Tsirekas and former general manager Michael McMahon in 2005.  According to Mr Cantali, the four men led a council delegation to Canada Bay’s Italian ‘sister city’ San Fele for 10 days, where they each received $3300 in allowance s from council. But according to Mr Cantali they did not stay in San Fele for the entire trip. “Why did they not stay there for the full 10 days?” Mr Cantali said. Cr Tsirekas said the delegation also visited the island town of Lipari and the Sicilian city of Poggioreale where “a large proportion of Canada Bay residents come from”.  Asked why all four men felt the need to represent council he replied, “four of us went because Michael Megna and Tony Fasanella were from the cities we visited”. “The general manager was there representing Canada Bay on an ofcial level,” Cr Tsirekas said. “And I was there as the mayor.” Cr Tsirekas pointed the finger  back at Cr Cantali, who is currently leasing a property he owns in Concord to a new restaurant called Romans.  A council spokeswoman said Romans had ignored their approved seating of 72 seats, providing 176 seats. “He [Mr Cantali] will need to take care of his own business,” Cr Tsirekas said. But according to Mr Cantali the  building had been leased to Macro Foods, which had then sub-leased the premises to Romans. “It has nothing to do with me at all,” Mr Cantali said. “If someone is using my b uilding,  you can’t blame me for it,” he said.
