As voters headed to the ballot boxthis month, they were met with localcandidate’s smiling faces on placardsand how-to-vote cards.
But behind the scenes, rivalcandidates had been involved in apolitical skirmish.
Firing the opening salvos wasIndependent candidate MichaelCantali, who has often been out-
voted and out-numbered by Laborand Liberal councillors in the last
four years.Mr Cantali said he was concerned
about a $10,000 trip taken by LiberalCr Michael Megna, former Cr Tony Fasanella, Mayor Angelo Tsirekasand former general managerMichael McMahon in 2005.
According to Mr Cantali, thefour men led a council delegation toCanada Bay’s Italian ‘sister city’ SanFele for 10 days, where they eachreceived $3300 in allowances fromcouncil.
But according to Mr Cantali they did not stay in San Fele for the entiretrip.
“Why did they not stay there forthe full 10 days?” Mr Cantali said.
Cr Tsirekas said the delegationalso visited the island town of Lipariand the Sicilian city of Poggiorealewhere “a large proportion of CanadaBay residents come from”.
Asked why all four men felt theneed to represent council he replied,“four of us went because MichaelMegna and Tony Fasanella werefrom the cities we visited”.
“The general manager was there
representing Canada Bay on anofcial level,” Cr Tsirekas said.
“And I was there as the mayor.”Cr Tsirekas pointed the finger
back at Cr Cantali, who is currently leasing a property he owns inConcord to a new restaurant calledRomans.
A council spokeswoman saidRomans had ignored their approvedseating of 72 seats, providing 176 seats.
“He [Mr Cantali] will need totake care of his own business,” CrTsirekas said.
But according to Mr Cantali the building had been leased to MacroFoods, which had then sub-leasedthe premises to Romans.
“It has nothing to do with me atall,” Mr Cantali said.
“If someone is using my building, you can’t blame me for it,” he said.
