• The most common way to ask questions about a person, place or object, is to use “Wh-” questions words. In English this question words are: “what, who, when, why, where, which, whose” and “how”.

• We also form a lot of questions with – How + adjective / adverb: “how much, how many, how long, how tall, how high, how big, how old…”

We usually answer these questions with a number. E.g. How much was your car? It was $30,000.

How long is the snake? It’s 2 feet long.

Note the answers to – “How tall / long / wide / high, etc.” E.g. How tall are you? I’m 1.8 m tall

How wide is the river? It’s 3 m wide

TASK

1. Split the class into pairs or small groups and distribute the flashcards to each

student.

2. Each flashcard contains questions related to education. View sample flashcard.

3. Review your flashcard and share your opinion about the question.

4. Discuss the questions with your partner or group.

• In “Wh-” questions, the verb “to be” or the modal verb (e.g. “can”, “should”) comes after the question word but before the subject.

E.g. Where is the supermarket? What can you see from here?

• In all tenses the auxiliary verb usually comes before the subject and the main verb comes after it. We usually do not change this word order or omit the auxiliary.

E.g. Where is Peter going? Who did you see at the beach?

When will the party start?
