NSU has a family appropriate and diverse campus. Not a lot happens here in this rather small community and things tend to run smoothly, thanks to the NSU campus police.

The NSU campus police’s motto, as well as any other operating officials, is to protect and serve. The number one role of any law enforcement organization within the U.S. is to defend the Constitutional Rights of U.S. citizens. After that, they are responsible for enforcing whatever laws and/or ordinances are on the books in their given jurisdiction. If those laws conflict with the Constitution then that is an issue to be fought out in the courts. Just imagine what it would be like to spend a day in their shoes.

“The main function is to protect and give students a peace of mind,” said Jim Flores, campus police of six years. “We like to ensure that the students as well as the community is safe while maintaining a presence and stay willing to help whomever when needed.”

Arrests on campus are not common but do happen.

“The most reported things on or surrounding campus is non-injury accidents, theft and medical calls; there may be a couple of arrests here and there,” said Chief Patti Buhl, NSU department of public safety.

The campus police have a variety of tasks to perform day in to day out which includes regular routine patrol, responding to calls, assisting students and staff with locked doors and car jumps.

“Interacting with the students makes the job fun, if it weren’t for the students we wouldn’t be here and also giving guidance to anyone in need.” said James Bell, of campus police.
