CLIMATE

Since Venice is very humid (for obvious reasons) the weather is quite variable during the four seasons. Due to its proximity to the sea it is generally quite temperate. *** in Spring (April, May and June): long days, pleasant temperatures, some rainfall. *** in Summer (July, August and September): very hot and humid (temperatures of up to 35°), sometimes thunderstorms. *** in Autumn (October, November and December): in general pleasant climate and temperatures, shortened days, alternately windy and dry (thanks to the bora wind) with humidity (caused by the sirocco wind). High tides. Colourful sunsets. *** in Winter (January, February and March): Temperatures under zero and snow quite rare. Apart from the carnival period there are generally less tourists in this period.

8 HIGH TIDE

In the period of October, November and December (in conjunction with the full moon, sirocco wind and rainfall) Venice sometimes suffers from high water, known as ‘acquaalta.’ The tide is continually monitored and high tide will usually be signalled some days before it happens. Despite the high tide, access to the city is guaranteed by elevated walkways situated in the main streets.

IL CAMPLUS LIVING REDENTORE HISTORICAL INFORMATION Before the church of the Redentore was built the Capuchin order of monks had been living on the island of Giudecca in the small church of Santa Maria degliAngeli, consecrated on 6 August 1536. The brothers stayed here until 1539, one Father Bonaventuraretired thereengaged in meditation and dedicating himself to poverty. Withstanding their initial difficulties, the brothers succeeded in winning the respect and veneration of the population. On the 20 July 1577 they celebrated the end of the plague with a procession that reached the church across a bridge of boats, beginning the tradition of the Feast of the Redentore still celebrated every year on the third Sunday of July. The commission for the church of the Redentore was the great masterpiece of Andrea Palladio, and required space for a considerable number of priests. For this reason, behind and around the majestic apse a new conception developed meaning that despite the size of the structure, the characteristics of simplicity and poverty relative to the Capuchin order were conserved. The convent of the Redentore will always be dedicated to the study of philosophy and theology. From 1922-1923 extra space was added to the complex allowing for more convenient areas for Theological Study and for the Provincial Curia. With the transferral of the Provincial Curia to the mainland in Mestre (in 1940) and the reduction in the number of young theologians, the new spaces became the seat of university students at the ‘Antonianum.’

9 The convent is still a seat of theological study, named the ‘Laurentianum’ and from 1968 affiliated with the Pontificial University Antonianum of Rome. It is also the site of the provincial library. From 2007 the Antonianum became CAMPLUS LIVING REDENTORE , a structure open to all who are respectful of the site in which they stay. For further informations www.cappuccinivenezia.org/venezia.htm GENERAL ORGANISATION The CAMPLUS LIVING REDENTORE consists of 50 rooms on two floors (25 rooms per floor). Each of these floors are elevated and include a study room, both located to the south of structure. The CAMPLUS LIVING REDENTORE has two staircases, one located near the entrance gate that leads to reception and to the second floor and another to the south of the building linking the two floors to the ground floor. On the ground floor, descending from the south staircase one arrives in a hall, proceeding straight ahead one reaches an external corridor shared with the priests. This corridor leads to the private garden of the priests and to the main entrance of the complex. Proceeding instead from the south staircase on the ground floor and opening the first door on the right of the corridor one finds the laundry, and opening the second door, the kitchen. On the left one sees the refectory, which opens out onto the private garden of the CAMPLUS LIVING REDENTORE. 10 THE ROOMS All the rooms include a bathroom and fridge. The rubbish that accumulates in the rooms will be removed by the cleaners during the weekly rearrangement of the rooms. Rubbish can also be deposited in a closed bag in the bins found in the communal areas. The Redentore rooms used to be the cells of the Capuchin brothers and are therefore simply furnished. The shower is surrounded by a curtain and one should be careful when using it to avoid water collecting in the room. In the bathroom there is both a European plug and an American one. For further information or in the case of problems in your room, do not hesitate to contact the hotel staff.

11 VENDING MACHINES Upon entering the dining room to your left you will find a room with vending machines serving coffee, snacks and drinks. These machines provide change. PRIVATE GARDEN All the rooms of the CAMPLUS LIVING REDENTORE are next to the internal garden of the structure, owned by the priests. The garden offers a beautiful view of Venice but since it is owned by the priests it cannot be accessed freely. At the complete disposition of the guests there is a second private garden, which one accesses directly from the dining room. From this garden one can admire the Venetian lagoon looking out to the Lido, and the small islands arranged around the Giudecca: San Servolo, San Lazzaro, Le Grazie, SaccaSessola and San Clemente. KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM The hotel includes the necessary utensils for cooking and eating meals inside. The kitchen is on the first floor and is equipped with crockery and pans for the use of guests. Guests are kindly reminded to maintain cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room, paying attention to clean and dry any utensils used and to put them back in place. The communal dining room is to be used for eating meals, watching the television, or just relaxing and chatting with other guests. For the recycling of rubbish please use the various bins available. Feel free to contact the personnel at reception in the case of any problems or requests. The kitchen and dining room are equipped with surveillance cameras. LAUNDRY Next to the kitchen there is a laundry room which for the cost of 2 euros allows one to wash and dry clothing. It is the responsibility of the client to buy washing detergent. Once the washing cycle has been completed, cloths that are not collected by the client will be deposited in a communal basket.
