TOMORROW’S

The Campaign forKent Place School

AT $23 MILLION,THE CAMPAIGN FORKENT PLACE SCHOOL CHARGES AHEAD

WINTER/SPRING 2008

With a short-term goal of reaching $22 million by the first of this year, the Kent Place community has, once again,

distinguished itself by making gifts that allowed us to reach $23 million instead. What a tribute it is to the loyalty

and commitment of our parents, friends and alumnae who dedicate themselves to the success of The Campaign for

Kent Place School in such a powerful way.

As has been noted from the beginning of the Campaign, it will take a total of $25 million to complete Phases I

and II and add $3 million to our current endowment. Phase I represents the new construction that runs along

Norwood Avenue and encompasses new classroom space, science labs and a music center. Phase II represents the

transformation of the old classroom building into a renovated Middle School with larger classrooms, a commons area,

newly designed science labs and updated lavatories.

To complete Phase III, we will need to exceed our $25 million goal and raise an additional $5 million. The Campaign

for Kent Place School will transform the face of the Kent Place campus and enhance our educational capabilities while

fulfilling a vision that began to emerge in 2001 under the guidance of our Board and with the enthusiastic support

of our alumnae, parents and friends.

As Kent Place School enters its 114th year, we are confident of the continued support of the entire community. Our

commitment honors the collective wisdom of all the parents, teachers and men and women who have been entrusted

over the years with the perpetuation of the Kent Place mission. KPS

New Academic Center under construction

“Right now, with its world-class

faculty, administration and

staff, and its extraordinary

students, KPS is in a great

place. We must constantly

strive, however, for excellence

in every regard. The Campaign

for Kent Place School allows us

to provide the most enriching

and flexible environment in

which to educate our students

and react to the rapid pace of

change in our world. The

Campaign is probably the most

important undertaking we've

launched in many years. With

the ongoing support of the

KPS community, I am confident

that we will succeed.”

As we look toward the future, we are starting to draft

preliminary plans for Phase III of the master plan. If

we exceed our campaign goal, we will be able to

consider this phase even sooner.

Phase III involves renovating and expanding the

Middle School wing of the Main Building. Following

Phase I, the new Upper School Academic Center,

and Phase II, renovating the Main Building for the

Middle School, Phase III will allow us to expand the

function of the old Middle School wing. The main

entrance will be approached through the Memory

Garden, under a stone portico, and will lead into a

new main lobby. The first floor will include a new

admission suite, a new health suite, conference

rooms and administrative offices.

The Nicholas C. English library will move to the

first floor with a scenic view of the campus green

edged by an outside terrace. The new space will

include its full book collection, areas for study,

quiet social and meeting areas, computer stations

and a centralized circulation desk. A new media

center, which will be located across from the library,

will be technologically equipped to include filming

capabilities.

The second floor will house the new and expanded

Middle and Upper School visual arts spaces. The

rooms will include studios and increased access to

such creative opportunities as digital photography,

sculpture and glass work. The second floor will

include math classrooms and a large conference area.

We also plan to include some flexible classroom

space to allow for new course offerings in the future.

As Phase I becomes a reality before our eyes, we

are excited to move in and begin our projects of

the future! KPS

WHAT’S NEXT?UPCOMING PLANSFOR CAMPAIGNDuring the 2008-2009 academic year, theOffice of Development & Alumnae Relationsand the Development Committee will striveto reach every member of the Kent Placecommunity to encourage you to participatein the exciting endeavor that is TheCampaign for Kent Place School. Never inthe history of the school have such ambitiousgoals been set. Never in the history of theschool have so many committed themselvesto ensuring that our facilities continue tomirror the excellence of our teaching.Congratulations to a Board of Trustees andan administration that had the foresightand drive to do the hard work required inpreparing the feasibility study, identifying theright architects and construction team andseeing this project through.

Proposed Upper and Middle School Academic Center, Phase III Additions and Renovation Project

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL, SUE BOSLAND:PHASE III CONSTRUCTION PLANS NOW IN DEVELOPMENT

Who can understand and appreciate the value of

a Kent Place education better than the alumnae

who experienced it first hand? During our most

formative years, when we needed exposure to

new ideas, participation in sports exemplifying

competition and teamwork, confidence that it was

OK to be smart, to be tall and to be ourselves, we

got it. Too often, education is perceived as the rote

memorization of dates, formulae, definitions and

sequences – easily learned and tested, but often not

very useful. Kent Place works on the untestables:

a love of learning, development of judgment,

consideration of consequences and intelligent

decision-making. These are the talents for a lifetime

of achievement, responsibility and contentment.

Support for Kent Place in this capital campaign is

critical if we are to continue these benefits for our

current and future students. The phenomenal

achievements of our alumnae inspire me to “pay it

forward” with a major contribution to our school.

I encourage all our constituencies to do likewise. I

appeal especially to alumnae to invest in the future

that we know will return value many times over as

more students develop the life skills we were so

fortunate to have had instilled in us.

A recent Wall Street Journal article* reported

the remarkable success of Kent Place graduates

attending select colleges. Among the 15 best high

schools in the nation, we are in the company of

Phillips Exeter Academy, which has $1 million in

endowment per student. Think what we could do if

we built our physical plant and endowment to the

much more modest goals we are currently pursuing.

Let’s get to it!

MARGOT SAUR MEYER ’56 COMMITSTO RESTORING FORMER STUDY HALL

Margot Meyer recently committed to supporting

the renovation of the Upper School art room by

establishing a $500,000 charitable remainder

unitrust which names Kent Place School as the

remainder beneficiary. The room, which holds many

special memories for women of that era, will be

restored to its original condition and will become

the new Middle School commons. By making this

gift, Margot stated that she wished to dedicate “our

old study hall and assembly room to my long-time

friend and charismatic president of the student

government, Ginger Atwood Ackerley ’56, in the

name of friendship and leadership.” This gift allows

the next generation of girls to enjoy the lounge —

to study, hold formal and informal meetings, hang

out with friends and create their own special mem-

ories. By making this planned campaign gift,

Margot also joins the esteemed Kent Place Heritage

Society as its newest member.

THE CAMPAIGN GETS CREATIVE WITHABBIE MOORE REITER ’83We are pleased to recognize Abbie Moore Reiter ’83

for bringing her expertise and inspired art direction

to all our campaign materials. For nearly 12 years,

Abbie, through her company Abbie Moore Design,

has creatively brought to life the majority of our

printed publications on campus. She has been

instrumental in helping the school win numerous

CASE accolades and awards for design. All of our

campaign materials, from newsletters to brochures,

have been presented to the school from her as a

major gift-in-kind in honor of the Campaign.

THE MCJ AMELIOR FOUNDATIONSUPPORTS SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCEThrough the generosity of alumna Christine

Chambers Gilfillan ’84, The MCJ Amelior

Foundation has committed to a $250,000 donation

to The Campaign for Kent Place School in sup-

port of scholarship assistance. “We are extremely

grateful for the critical work that Kent Place is

accomplishing and for the positive difference it is

making in so many young lives. Our foundation is

pleased to participate in this historic initiative,”

remarked Christine. Tuition assistance is a vital way

to ensure educational excellence for present and

future generations of Kent Place women. KPS

CAMPAIGN BRIEFS: ALUMNAE GIVE BACK TO KPS

Margot Saur Meyer ’56

Progress on the Kent Place School Upper and

Middle School Academic Center is moving quickly

forward. Many sections of the new addition have

already been completed, and the structural framing

is visible to the entire school community.

The construction crew has worked diligently

throughout the winter season, in wet and frigid

temperatures, to meet the architectural design

intent, structural criteria and timeline of the

project. As the building continues to rise and take

shape, the faculty, staff and students of Kent Place

School can begin to ponder all of the tremendous

opportunities that this new academic space

will provide.

COMPLETED AND CURRENT WORKUnderground plumbing, electrical and storm

drainage piping lines have been installed through-

out the building site.

Concrete has been placed to form the foundation

walls of the entire addition, including the

classroom wing, the science wing and the music

wing. The concrete slab was placed following the

completion of the underground installations. The

completed basement will provide valuable storage

space, a recycling center and a new maintenance

office area.

The erection of the steel super-structure has been

completed, and the form of our new Academic

Center has truly begun taking shape.

Elevator shaft walls are in the process of being

installed on both sides of the addition. These

elevators will be located at the end of the Middle

School wing and at the connection to the

Main Building.

UPCOMING WORKThe building exterior will be covered in preparation

for installing the exterior veneer and so that work

can take place on the interior. This spring, the

Tudor-inspired design, which mirrors the style of

other campus buildings, will be more visible.

While not seen from the outside, the framing

of the interior walls will begin as the addition is

partially closed. This will allow the installation

of infrastructure that supplies electricity, water,

heating, cooling and safety systems.

The project team thanks every member of the KPS

community for their continued support, excitement

and patience throughout this process. KPS
