PRAY THE ROSARY - -We are asking parishioners to pray the rosary for our parish, for the end of Covid-19 and for our country to return to God's will for us. If people would pray the rosary on a regular basis with family, friends and fellow parishioners we can help turn the tide of evil and apathy. If you do not know how to pray the rosary there are some, great websites (Holy Family School of Faith, EWTN, Paradisus Dei, and others). Also there are handouts in back of Chruch that shows how to pray a rosary with the prayers to pray.

ADVENT SCRIPTURE READING FOR PRAYERFUL MEDITATION: Micah 5:2-4 “But you, O Bethlehem Eph’rathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time

when she who is in travail has brought forth, then the rest of his brethren shall return to the people of Israel. … And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.” 1. Does God reveal the birth place of the Messiah, if yes, where is it? 2. How can one be born and whose origin is from old, from ancient days? 3. Did you know Bethlehem means House of Bread, what is the significance

to House of Bread? Scripture Reading and Questions provided by the Evangelization Committee.

The One Faith, One Family, One Future in Christ campaign is an opportunity to impact the lives of people throughout our region. Please join us in praying for the campaign using the campaign prayer.

Lord, our God, You have graciously given use our one Catholic faith, our one Catholic family, and our one holy future with Christ.

We are your disciples: Create in us sincere and steadfast hearts ready to defend our faith. Create in us generous and giving hearts ready to share our faith. Create in us loving and merciful hearts ready to care for those lonely forgotten.

Lead us to be fearless and to “hope for good things, for lasting joy and mercy” (Sirach 2:9)

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen The campaign is a powerful sign of our unity as Catholics, our strength as a family of faith, and our desire to leave a strong and holy Church for future generations of disciples. Thank you for your prayerful support.

Doorstep Newsletter Article December, 2020 This month is all about the Christmas Store, even if it is completely different than in years past! This year is not a ‘Store’, but more of a Christmas Adoption Project. All of the families who signed up through the Christmas Bureau will receive a food order and $15 gift card per person in the household. Doorstep is also adding a blanket and health kit for each household. Distribution days this year will be December 14th – 16th. What we currently need for Christmas: Towel sets (bath & hand only), Full-sized Shampoo/Conditioner, Toothpaste, Combs, Deodorant, Full/Queen and King Blankets, and money. We need money to purchase the gift cards, the food, and any of the above items not donated. Where we have asked for items in years past, please send a check or go to our website (www.doorsteptopeka.org) to donate by credit card. We appreciate anything you can do to help this year during Covid Christmas. Don’t forget your year-end donations as well! Doorstep would gratefully accept your donations to help us start out 2021 in the black. Our extra Covid funds will be nearly spent, but people will still be in need in 2021, whether it is Covid related, or life has just happened to, and they need our help!

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Life Explained: Can Divorced Catholics Take Communion?

Question: Can a divorced Catholic receive holy Communion?

Answer: Unfortunately, too many people today — Catholics and non-Catholics alike — mistakenly believe that divorce separates one from the Communion of the Church and that divorced persons may not receive Communion. However, as the Church has communicated in a number of places, the issue at hand is not the reality of divorce, but is more often the reality of re-marriage outside of the Church (such as in the case of a Catholic who was previously married within the Church, divorced, and remarried without receiving an annulment). Divorced persons are called to live chastely as single people and to observe the same call to avoid sin as anyone else who desires to receive the Eucharist. Beyond this, however, Pope Francis has reminded us that the healing power of the Eucharist can be especially significant for those who have “endured separation, divorce, or abandonment … divorced people who have not remarried, and often bear witness to marital fidelity, ought to be encouraged to find in the Eucharist the nourishment they need to sustain them in their present state of life.” (Amoris Laetitia, no. 242) Moreover, he continues, “The local community and pastors should accompany these people with solicitude, particularly when children are involved or when they are in serious financial difficulty.” (AL, no 242) As Pope Francis has also reminded us, the Eucharist is “not a prize for the perfect,” but “a powerful medicine and nourishment” (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 47). Because we all stand in need of healing and wholeness, the Church invites all who seek to live their faith in integrity and devotion to come and receive the grace offered in the Eucharist.

THE “VALUE THEM BOTH” PETITION - We will begin to pray weekly for the passage of the Value Them Both amendment with a petition during the Prayer of the Faithful. What is VALUE THEM BOTH? VTB is the proposed state constitutional amendment for life supported by the Catholic Bishops of Kansas. The amendment is crucial because the Kansas Supreme Court recently created a nearly unlimited “right” to abortion in our state. This means that all of our existing pro-life laws including bans on taxpayer-funded and late-term abortions, and parental consent requirements will be considered unconstitutional once challenged. The VALUE THEM BOTH amendment will reverse the Supreme Court ruling and once again allow Kansans, through their elected representatives, to pass laws that will help protect mothers and their unborn babies from the abortion industry. Please pray for passage of VALUE THEM BOTH. CATHOLIC PLANNED GIVING BRIEF: THANKSGIVING – Sharing Life’s Gifts - You have spent this challenging year persevering with faith to provide for your family, parish, and neighbors in need. The Office of Stewardship and Development is grateful for the abundant gifts you returned to your parish and the Archdiocese during this year of uncertainty. You have put the “Catholic” in stewardship and planned giving. Visit the Archdiocesan website, CatholicPlannedGiving.com. BE A HOLIDAY HERO FOR FOSTER CHILDREN - Christmas will be here before we know it and KVC, a non-profit child welfare agency, is in great need of Holiday Heroes to sponsor children for Christmas. It has approximately 2,500 children across the state hoping for a good Christmas this year. The KVC team is collecting gift cards, presents and monetary donations Nov 30th – Dec 18th. Please visit https://kansas.kvc.org/get-involved/holiday-giving/ for more information. Thank you for helping make Christmas a little brighter for so many children! THE CATHOLIC GUIDE FOR END-OF-LIFE AND ESTABLISHING OF ADVANCE DIRECTIVES - The Ethics Council that serves Archbishop

Naumann has produced a comprehensive resource for end-of-life planning titled “Catholic Guide For End-Of Life and Establishing Of Advance Directives”. The purpose of the guide is to assist the faithful in making wise decisions in accordance with the teachings of our faith about complex treatments in grave illness or as life’s end approaches. It also includes two Appendices for a Durable Power of Attorney and an Advance Directive form. For a free digital copy of the Guide, visit www.archkck.org/prolife-end-of-life-care.

NEW VETERANS GARDEN WITH MEMORIAL PLANNED FOR MT. CALVARY, TOPEKA - Catholic Cemeteries of Northeast Kansas is developing a Veterans Garden and memorial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Topeka, Kan. The section will accommodate 800 new burial spaces for veterans and their spouses. The garden is being developed in the style of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with rows of white headstones. The centerpiece of the Veterans Garden will be a replica of the Marine Corps Memorial statue of the raising of the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima. Flags of the United States and branches of the Armed Forces will flank the memorial. To make pre-need arrangements, call 785-272-0820; contact [email protected]; or visit www.cathcemks.org.

HAYDEN IS ENROLLING FOR 2020-2021 - Becoming a Hayden student is more than merely submitting an application. It is a process for you to come to know our school and decide if Hayden offers the kind of experience you and your family want to be a part of. We love our school and we want every Hayden family to feel as we do! Contact us at [email protected] CATHOLIC CHARITIES SNOWBALL 2021 - Due to COVID-19, many businesses have closed their doors, and many jobs have been lost. As more and more families are facing financial hardships, they are turning to Catholic Charities for help. Your support to our mission has never been more critical as we continue to provide help, hope and hospitality across our 21-county service area. Snow Ball 2021 is sure to be unforgettable as the event shifts to an entirely virtual experience. Guests will host their own version of Snow Ball in their homes, much like the founders who started Snow Ball with a potluck dinner and a small gathering of family and friends over 47 years ago. Register now to join us on Saturday, January 16, 2021. Our hope is to expand, engage and celebrate hundreds of Snow Ball parties across the agency’s 21-county service footprint and beyond! https://catholiccharitiesks.org/special-events/snow-ball/ or Theresa Gaul 913.433.2068
