Welcome to Cambridge! It’s fantastic to have youwith us and we hope your visit is informative andenjoyable. The purpose of the Open Days is toprovide the opportunity for you to find outmore about the University, our courses and theColleges, and to talk with staff and students.

There’s lots going on during the Open Days, so hereare our recommendations to help you make the mostof your visit:

n bring a copy of your ticket and keep it to hand –you need it to access presentations and Colleges

n look at the programme of activities in advance orearly in the day and make a plan – you might find ithelpful to mark which sessions you want to go toand/or in what order

n arrive in good time for the start of sessions – toprevent disruption, latecomers may not be admitted

Inthe event of a fire alarm, please vacate the buildingimmediately and follow staff directions. Do not uselifts and remain outside until you’re informed by amember of staff that you may re-enter.

General information

Information pointsWe have four information points – open between10.00am and 4.00pm each day – where staff are onhand to answer queries and where you can pick upcopies of various publications relating to the OpenDays and undergraduate study at Cambridge.

n The central information point is at the OldSchools in the city centre (map location ).

n There are two information points on the SidgwickSite – in the Faculty of Law (map location )and the marquee (map location ).

n The West Cambridge Site information point is inthe Computer Laboratory (map location ).

At the central information point, there areinformation stands and representatives from thefollowing services as well:

As well as an information stand, tours of theUniversity Library and its unique collections areavailable throughout the day. Each tour lastsapproximately 15 minutes (last tour at 4.15pm). Tour participants must be aged 16 or older.

The Sports Centre is open for visitors to look aroundand informal tours of the facilities are availablethroughout the day from reception.

ADC TheatrePark Street (map location ) Open: 1.00pm – 4.00pm

Students are on hand to answer questions andinformal tours are available from the ADC Bar.

Prayer roomsThe prayer room on the Sidgwick Site (locatedbehind the Lecture Block, map location ) isavailable 10.00am – 4.00pm. The Multi-Faith Centreon the West Cambridge Site (map location ) is also available for prayer/meditation 1.00pm –2.30pm.

RefreshmentsRefreshments can be purchased on some Universitysites.

n Sidgwick Site: Sidgwick Buttery (map location9.00am – 5.00pm) – drinks, snacks, sandwiches;Arc Café (map location 9.00am – 4.00pm) –drinks, snacks, sandwiches.

You can also find plenty of food stalls, sandwich andcoffee shops, restaurants, and pubs/bars servingfood throughout the city. Trinity Street/King’s Paradeand the streets around the Market Square (MarketHill) are a good place to start. Please note that theUniversity of Cambridge accepts no liability for theproducts/services provided by these companies.

Colleges

What’s a College?Cambridge is a ‘collegiate’ university, which means itcomprises University faculties and departments indifferent academic subjects, and a number ofColleges.

Your College is your base for the time you’re atCambridge. It’s where you live, eat, do a lot ofsocialising, receive academic and pastoral support,and where you often (though not always) have yoursupervisions. Students on the same course,regardless of their College, are taught together bythe academic faculties/departments, attending thesame lectures, seminars and practicals. There are noColleges that are ‘better’ for certain subjects.

Advice on how (and how not) to choose a College,along with an explanation of the key functions thatthe University (through the faculties/departments)

and Colleges are responsible for, can be found inthe Undergraduate Prospectus and on our website(www.cam.ac.uk/choosingacollege/).

Visiting CollegesThe Colleges are open for visitors to drop in at thetimes specified below (please check the openingtimes carefully as access isn’t possible at any othertime) – follow the signs from the main Collegeentrance (see the map on p12-3 for Collegelocations).

Some Colleges have their own events taking placeduring 2 and 3 July that require separate booking(see individual College websites for details andbooking).

Many of these museums are open to the public throughout theyear – please find details below regarding those that are open during the Cambridge Open Days.

Getting around Cambridge

Most Open Days venues are within walking distanceof the city centre, but some Colleges anddepartments are a little further out. If you havesufficient time you may like to walk out to theseColleges/departments. Alternatively, you may wishto use one of the bus services (see below).

Walking toursFour walking tours are available – two around thecity centre and two to/from West Cambridge. Thetours vary in length (between 30 minutes and twohours) and you can pick these up from the centraland West Cambridge Site information points (maplocations ).

If it’s a nice day we particularly recommend the walkto West Cambridge (approximately 30 minutes fromthe central information point), which takes you pastthe University Library and Faculty of Mathematics, aswell as a number of the Colleges.

BusesCambridge Open Days shuttle busWe’re providing a free shuttle bus service betweenQueen’s Road (‘The Backs’) and the West CambridgeSite (JJ Thomson Avenue). There’s also a stop nearStorey’s Way, for those who wish to visit the Facultyof Mathematics and/or the Colleges in this area(Churchill, Fitzwilliam, Lucy Cavendish, St Edmund’sand Murray Edwards).

The buses run between 9.30am and 4.30pm and wesuggest you allow around 40 minutes for a journey.There’s limited seating on each bus but we anticipatea pick-up/set down from each of the three stopsevery 20-30 minutes (traffic depending).

The last pick-up from Queen’s Road (to WestCambridge) is at 4.00pm, and the last pick-up fromthe West Cambridge Site (to Queen’s Road) is at4.30pm. Please note that the West Cambridge Site isapproximately 10 minutes’ walk from the MadingleyRoad Park & Ride site.

City servicesThe Uni 4 and Citi 6 bus services (operated byStagecoach) link some Colleges/departments withthe city centre. Information and timetables areavailable online at: www.stagecoachbus.com.

The train station is approximately 20 minutes’ walkfrom the city centre (around 30 minutes’ walk fromthe Sidgwick Site), or buses depart every 10-20minutes from Emmanuel Street.

If you use one of the Park & Ride services, you cancatch a bus back from the following city centre busstops to:

The University faculties/departments and Colleges are located throughout the city, but Cambridgeisn’t a large city and is easy to get around – most students walk or cycle everywhere. Cambridge is a small and busy city, not builtwith modern traffic flows in mind, and so it’sbest to travel into the city by public transport(see also ‘Getting around Cambridge’).

By carThe roads in and around the city centre can getcongested and parking is very limited. Therefore, werecommend visitors arriving by car use the Park &Ride services.

The P&R sites are shown on the map (right). It’santicipated that they’ll be busy on 2 and 3 July(particularly Madingley Road and Trumpington).Therefore, allow plenty of time to travel in case yourintended P&R site is full and you have to continue toan alternative P&R site.

Buses leave every 10 minutes and the journeynormally takes around 15 minutes, but it’s advised toallow at least 30 minutes to travel into the citycentre. For more information, including timetables,and parking and ticket prices see the website at:www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/parkandride/.

Visitors from the north can also use the GuidedBusway P&R services into the city centre (journeytime around 25 minutes). Follow the signs forLongstanton P&R from Junction 29 of the A14. Disabled parking is available in the city’s car parksand on some streets. Please check in advance with theTourist Information Centre (www.visitcambridge.org).

By trainCambridge train station is approximately 20 minutes’walk from the city centre. There are bus stops in front ofthe main entrance and buses run every 10-20 minutesto St Andrew’s Street in the city centre (returning to thestation from Emmanuel Street).
