Cambodia Brief IntroductionCambodia -- officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 square miles) in area, bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.

Cambodia has a population of over 15 million. The official religion is Theravada Buddhism, practiced by approximately 95 percent of the population. The country's minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams, and 30 hill tribes. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, the political, eco-nomic, and cultural centre of Cambodia.

Weather and MapCambodia has a tropical climate which, like the rest of Southeast Asia, is dominated by mon-soons, bringing in dry or wet weather.

In summer, the southwest monsoon is drawn landward from the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand. These winds bring the rainy season from mid May to mid October.

During the rest of the year (dry season runs from October to April) the northeast monsoon brings drier and cooler air. Just before the rainy season starts (April and early May) tempera-tures and humidity are high.

RainfallThe southern part of the country receives more rain than the central and northern parts. The average annual aver-age temperature is around 25ºC with little variation throughout the year (annual minimum about 22ºC, annual maximum about 28ºC). However, just before the start of the rainy season, maximum temperatures may rise to more than 38ºC. January is the coolest month, April is the warmest.

Typhoons are rareTyphoons and tropical cyclones that often devastate coastal Vietnam rarely cause damages in Cambodia. The total annual rainfall average is between 1000 and 1500 mm. The heaviest amounts of rain fall in the southern, coastal areas and in the mountainous northeast. In Phnom Penh and Seam Reap, it almost never rains all day, such a pattern would be exceptional. During the rainy season, it is normal to have a heavy thunderstorm of about one hour in late afternoon, while the rest of the day is sunny and dry. However, on the south coast it can be raining days on end during the rainy season

After I grown up, I’ve learn how difficult to be a parent and hardships of parenting, the loves I received from them were such strong and with no regrets. I have been in searching for ways to return, hope to be able to make their life comfortable, easy and happy. I’d love travel very much, every well planned and enjoyable trips became a unforgettable experi-ence in part of my life. After hard works, I was always dreaming to visit different cities in different countries, it is not necessary to be a luxury and expensive trip, but a leisure and budget tour. In my mind, traveling is life's most luxurious enjoyment, so I want to arrange a wonderful trip for my parents.

I cannot wait to share my idea with my parents, I believe they would love of my plan. When I announce travel proposals, my father interrupted me, said he doesn't like to travel, he don't want to go out. I am very surprised why he is so against to it. ◆Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the vibrant bustling capital of Cambodia. Situated at the confluence of three rivers, the mighty Mekong, the Bassac and the great Tonle Sap, what was once considered the 'Gem' of Indochina. The capital city still maintains considerable charm with plenty to see. It exudes a sort of provincial charm and tranquillity with French colonial mansions and tree-lined boulevards amidst monumental Angkorian architecture. Phnom Penh is a veritable oasis compared to the modernity of other Asian capitals. A mixture of Asian exotica, the famous Cambodian hospitality awaits the visitors to the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Traces of the city’s former splendor are visible at the Royal Palace, a stone showpiece of classical Khmer archi-tecture, enclosing the Silver Pagoda, a jewel-encrusted wonder.

◆Kampot and Kep

The province of Kampot is bordered by the Gulf of Thailand and Vietnam. Kep is small village on the coast within Kampot province.

Add to it the fact Cambodia is a very inexpensive travel destination and the fact most visitors to Cambodia never make it beyond Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat or Phnom Penh, the frenetic capital of Cambodia. Kampot and Kep are two great places to spend some time relaxing without the usual hustle and bustle of Southeast Asia.

The economy of Kampot Province is largely based around salt and pepper production and a bit of fishing. That translates into some fantastic food on offer as well.

Sihanoukville town sits in the center of a small peninsula that juts into the warm waters of the Gulf of Thai-land. Several beaches of fine pearl-white sand line the shore around the peninsula, most easily accessible from town, each separated as much by character as the rocky headlands between. Angkor Wat (1992)

This is the most popular tourist attraction in Cambodia – it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angkor Wat, also known as the “City of Temples” is located in Angkor, in the province of Siem Reap. This temple complex features the largest collection of religious monuments in the world. The site measures over 162 hectares and was originally constructed as a Hindu temple for Vishnu by the Khmer empire. But by the end of the 12th century, it was turned into a Buddhist temple. The Angkor Wat temple complex is also considered as the purest example of the Khmer architectural style.

Preah Vihear Temple (2008)

This ancient Hindu temple, like the Angkor Wat, was built during the Khmer Empire in Cambodia. It is located atop the Dangrek Mountains in the Preah Vihear province of Cambodia. For years, there was a dispute between Thailand and Cambodia with regards to who owned the temples. The International Court of Justice decided that the temple was indeed part of Cambodia. The temple served as an important edifice of the Khmer spiritual life.

Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk, Archaeological Site of Ancient Ishanapura (2017)

Cambodia’s newest UNESCO site is a cultural and archaeological site in the Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk. It is located in the province of Kompung Thom and about 176 kilometers from Angkor. This temple complex is now in a ruined state but it was once the heart of the Pre-Angkorian Chenla Kingdom. It served as the capital and central royal sanctuary for the kingdom during the late 6th to the 9th century.

The structures that make up this complex were constructed at different time periods. They mainly used brick for construction although sandstone was also built on certain structures. These temple complex structures also had various features such as octagonal towers, prasats, ponds, reservoirs, lion sculptures, and more.



Cambodia operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz frequency. Most sockets accommodate plugs with two flat pins.

If your appliances plug has a different shape, you may need a plug adapter. Depending on how much you plan to travel in the future, it may be worthwhile to get a combination voltage converter and plug adapter.

Cambodia Currency

The official currency of Cambodia is the riel. However, US dollars are widely used and accepted. In Battambang and other areas near the Thai border, the Thai baht is also accepted.

The exchange rate is roughly 4000 riel to one dollar, although the last couple of months the rate has gone up a bit, reaching 4200 riel to the dollar. Many businesses still use the 4000 riel exchange rate, as it’s easier.Hotels, guesthouses, and other larger businesses will quote their prices in dollars. Smaller shops and market stalls quote prices in riel.

Getting changeMoney changers are concentrated at the markets and change all well known currencies into US dollars. They usually offer a better rate than the banks. Coins are not used in Cambodia. The riel fluctuates around 4000 riel to a dollar.

ExchangeYou don’t need to change dollars into riel when entering the country as you will inevitably pay a lot of things in dollars and receive change in riel, which you can use for smaller purchases.

For most visitors to the Kingdom, visa are obtainable upon arrival at both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap International Airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

At land crossing from Thailand, visas are available at Poipet Banteay Meanchey and Cham Yeam (Koh Kong province). Visitors who enter from Vietnam through Bavet or Ka-Om Samnor will need to have already obtained their visas prior to their arrival through a Cambodian Embassy or Consulate overseas.

You can obtain your visa either on arrival, or online in advance as a tourist e-visa, which costs $37 including a $7 processing fee. The tourist e-Visa should take three working days to process and is valid for use for three months from the date of issue. An e-visa will only be accepted at Siem Reap and Phnom Penh airports, Koh Kong, Poipet (from Thailand), and Bavet (from Vietnam).
