CREATION MUSEUM

November 15th at 5:30PM we will be traveling to Mapleton, IA for a trip to the Creation Museum!

We will see animals from around the world & hear about God’s creation. We’ll be one of the first groups to tour the new museum since it’s dedication is on the 11th!

Everyone is welcome to go, we will be leaving from the church @ 5:30 PM and scheduled to be back by 9:00 PM. If you

would like to attend please sign up in the Friendship room ASAP!

Thanksgiving Dinner

The Outreach Board is sponsoring a free Thanksgiving meal in the Parish Hall. Come enjoy Turkey/Roast Beef, Potatoes, Veggies,

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

It’s a wrap on Creation. Hope everyone has enjoyed the mural the children have created. During November, the Sunday/Wednesday school children are studying about Noah from Genesis 5-9. For memory work, they continue to learn the books of the Bible. Children’s Educational hour is held every Sunday morning from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. ages 3 years to high school. Parents are always welcome to enjoy a cup of hot coffee/tea while listening to their children sing, listening to the Bible story, or participating in the craft. Wednesday evenings offer pizza at 5 p.m. for ages ranging from k-8 grade. Educational hour from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as always parents are welcome to stay. Sunday/Wednesday School is held in the church basement

It was 4:00 PM Thanksgiving Day in the middle of the Lions game, one of my relatives had to leave to pick up a $129 TV. I looked at my wife and said, “Less people to do the dishes!” Leaving the family is sometimes a relief because conflict is escalating and unsaid hurts and frustrations can boil over at any moment. It is easier to text our good friends on the other side of town than to keep up small talk with the in-laws. Can you relate? Most can or maybe you are one that laments that deep family talk has almost disappeared with the advent of Black Friday moving to Thursday. The result, half of the population must either go back to work or pursue their electronic idols a day early. (I know it saves on Christmas gift prices…) Why has the pursuit of fast money and technology become so popular? Answer: Neither talks back, both always agree with us, both look pretty, and both might make us feel moderately good! Whereas real life relationships involve bad breathe, sour attitudes, long drawn-out boring dialogue, and subjects that don’t trip our trigger. Why is Thanksgiving at an All Time Low? Answer: Sitting and doing nothing seems to be a waste of time! Not being busy makes us feel in complete. Yet, God gives you permission to rest! “Remember the Sabbath Day!” It is okay to stop and be unproductive and do relationships. ( Ouch! I know we as Christians aren’t that bad, but our culture tempts us to fall in line!) Try the following and pursue a simple thanksgiving this year: The Bible says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility

value others above yourselves,” (Phillippians 2:3). I would echo some simple advise, “Lower Your Expectations!” If you want a better thanksgiving then lower your expectations of others and listen to their stories. Doing such is not a waste of time. Ask them to tell their story? Then shut-up and listen! You might ask, “How is your job doing?” “What is going on in your church?” “What do you find

interesting in your life right now? ” “Tell me more!” The answers may surprise you and make for an interesting thanksgiving. Lower your expectations and listen for 10 minutes longer than you normally would. Engage and if you can even shut off your phone, so you can truly value others above yourself. A tough relationship may

just soften a little with this approach! Who knows maybe your conversation will lead to a game, a drive, or even forgiveness for past hurts. At the thanksgiving table you might ask, “What are you most thankful for right now in your life?” Then deliberately, especially if you are hosting the dinner pray, “O give thanks to the Lord for He is good and His love endures forever. AMEN” The alternative is a 4

th 52 inch TV that will show

a thrilling story that will keep your attention, but will ultimately rob you from your God given need for real human relationship. Thank God Jesus came to earth for us! He too died to be in relationship with you and I! Our failures are forgiven!

The Bible and NFL Players not Standing During the Anthem

Does the Bible Say Anything about the NFL Players not Standing During the Anthem?

It says at least two things:

1. The Bible says of all governments including the United States, "They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrong-doer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience....7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. (Romans 7:4-7)

We owe respect to our country and to our government. We do that by pay-ing taxes, but we also do it by rising when a flag is present. We do so by

saying the pledge allegiance, the National Anthem, etc. So, for a Christian Football player it would be hard to justify sitting during the national anthem, because both our country and presi-dent deserve respect. Admittedly, our President can say things in colorful ways, but he still is the President.

However, lest we forget another passage:

2. The Bible says in Isaiah 1:17, "Learn to do good. Seek justice, Rebuke the ruthless, Defend the fatherless, Plead for the [rights of the] widow [in court]." Many NFL players have made the case that they are standing up for the oppressed. Standing up for orphans and widows is bib-lically expected. In fact, Israel was destroyed because they ignored such people (Baal wor-ship was all about selfishness, caring about self, God likewise is about "Love God, Love Neighbor"). However, God expects us to actually attend to such people not just visually, but in deed (James 1:27 - Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.)

It would be good for those who know someone who is oppressed to actually pay for a lawyer to defend them. Instead of booing at a ball game against players, it would be good after the game to go actually feed someone who is hungry and give them clothes. If we have a widow in our family and our neighbors family to make sure they have help. If we know a foreigner who is op-pressed, make sure care is given. The NFL may see a problem, this is all the more reason for us to live as Christians, loving God and loving our neighbor!

You can expect non-Christians to disrespect the country and in the same breathe demand justice but not open their wallet to the need. Yet, biblically, Christians both honor our country and are to stand up for the oppressed in our midst, making sure they receive right treatment both in court and at home.

What does this look like at Calvary? We are doing the new Blessing Box with food, it means also supporting the Gospel Mission, and probably the simplest way is to heartily welcome rather than ignore the guests of our church! Plus, we are to allow the two passages above to affect our eve-ryday life as Christians! For when we help the orphan and widow and the foreigner we are help-ing Christ himself!

This is the program where your contributed dollars will benefit families wanting to send their children to Lutheran elementary & secondary schools in Iowa. The benefits you receive are two-fold: 1) You get to see more children experiencing the love of God every day, and 2) You will receive a 65% tax credit on your Iowa state income taxes and possibly a charitable deduction on your Federal return. On Wednesday nights the youth & adults are reading through the Book of Mark. From 5:30 - 5:45 as part of the opening for WNAC. If you would like to participate come on out and join us!

We are looking for a few good Men & Women!

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. - Psalm 95:1-2

Many of us like to sing. Even if we are hesitant to sing publicly, when we are alone in the car or at home, often we sing along when we hear our favorite songs. We love to sing for a lot of reasons—joy, love, sorrow, even fear sometimes.

Our best reason to sing is given in the Bible verse: “Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.” (Psalm 95:1)

We live in changing times. Change means uncertainty. Culture, the future, security, economy, jobs, politics, family—these are life’s experiences that bring us more change that we are sometimes comfortable with. In this sea of change, we can always depend on the unchanging Rock of our salvation.

Salvation is the Bible’s word for God rescuing us from the consequences we should receive for all of our sins. We don’t give God the respect he is worthy of. We second guess how God deals with

us and this world. We don’t give God the love he deserves. He comes in second or third or four hundred on our love list. Our actions and attitude pile up a boatload of trouble for us. God should

reject and punish us.

But instead of dishing out what we deserve, the Rock of our salvation rescued us. In his great love, God chose to rescue us by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer sin’s consequences for us. God will never punish us for our sins because he already punished Jesus for them. God’s choices and actions are

unchangeable history. Our Rock of salvation will not shift his position or change his mind. He has rescued us from our sins.

So we sing to the Rock of our salvation. We sing for joy because God has forgiven us. We sing songs about his sure promises to chase away our fears and heal our wounded hearts. We sing to express our love to God who will never stop loving us. In Christ,

done, Is doing, and will do in our lives.

As we head into the holiday season most of us naturally start considering just how fortunate we are and how little others in our community have. With that in mind all of November & December Calvary Lutheran will be gathering clothing donations for our community members who could use a little more warmth. Help us give a child a coat, a father some boots, a mother some gloves. A little glimmer of hope and love this holiday to someone who could truly use a smile and a hug!
