This morning, we were blessed to have His Grace, The Reverend Mark Coleridge, Archbishop celebrate our Mass to mark tomorrow’s Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Fr Liam and Fr Modestus concelebrated the Mass. It was a lovely celebration, and our students not only displayed exemplary behaviour throughout the Mass, but put in their best singing performance in years! Archbishop Coleridge spoke eloquently in his Homily about the importance of our students knowing that they are a part of a bigger vision. In articulating this message, the Archbishop alluded to the film “Dead Poets’ Society” in the wake of the death of Robin Williams; His Grace had noticed in Morven this morning the many old photos of thousands of SPC Old Boys up on the walls, and linked these to the film. The Archbishop then drew the link of this bigger vision to the endless possibilities available to our students, before drawing his Homily towards the message that the Assumption of Mary is an excellent example of the Church’s bigger vision of what is possible for us all. We sincerely thank His Grace for his presence and his wisdom, and we look forward to inviting him back in the near future. And happy birthday Fr Liam for this Saturday!

SPC ART SHOW

It has come to that time of year again!! Come one, come all! St. Patrick’s College will be holding our Art Show from Tuesday 19 August. It is a time when we get to share the many creations our students have been diligently working on. All are revealed to the public eye. Our students have been working tirelessly to produce an array of imaginative and creative art works ranging from drawings and paintings to sculptures of various materials. Parents and friends are welcomed to view the displayed works on our Open Day - Tuesday 3:00pm – 6:00pm. Alternatively, viewings are also open on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20 from 12:30pm to 2:00pm.

On Monday of this week the three Year 10 Geography classes embarked on a fact finding mission to the Gold Coast Seaway as part of their studies on coastal management. With the sun shining and the unseasonably warm weather, the main focus was keeping the young men focussed on the tasks and activities in hand rather than trying to duck into the surf for a quick dip. With the assistance of Naomi and Joel from Griffith University’s Coastal Management Program the young men learnt about the unique ecosystem that thrives on the Gold Coast, the Spit in particular and specifically the sand pumping system that is in place. As the day progressed the boys undertook a number of field exercises and activities and came back with some amazing field sketches and photos of the ever changing and amazing coastal system that is the Northern Gold Coast. These activities form the basis for the students’ report into how effectively the management practices on the Gold Coast are as well as forward planning and thinking towards the proposed cruise ship terminal to be constructed in the area.

Mr Charles Brauer AP Student Formation

The point of camp is……

Two weeks ago I shared with our community the pursuit of

the purpose of our camps and outdoor education program. I

ended with a suggestion –“ instead o f answering the questions

of our students and rationalising the outcomes to them, perhaps we

should encourage our young men to trust the experience and let the

answers speak for themselves.” Below is an extract from Josep

Grew-Figuerola’s (Year 9 Coffey 5) response to the purpose

of camp and his answer to the experience.

I pull my paddle through the water, struggling to keep

the same methodical pace while our canoe bobs with

the waves. A few meters away, I hear the campers

from another boat singing to keep morale just high

enough to get us back to base camp. “Row, row, row

your canoe, gently down the lake. Misery, misery,

misery, misery, life is but a pain.” The headwind

prevents us from making more than one kilometre an

hour, and is throwing waves at our canoe since we

left the secluded river mouth. A wave just higher than

the sides of our canoe crashes into us, and my boardies

get drenched. I wonder how on earth I got into this

mess.

I learnt something there. If camp does nothing else, it

makes you appreciate the little things in life.

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Our annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival is being held Friday 15 August at Curlew Park, Sandgate. The carnival is always a great way to end a week of celebrations, including the Feast of the Assumption. I’d like to draw your attention to some important details relating to tomorrow’s carnival. Presence and Participation: Your attention to ensure your son’s attendance and participation at the carnival is imperative to continue such a wonderful tradition. The carnival is a Special Event Day. Absences need to be explained with a medical certificate addressed to your son’s House Dean. Sun Safety: It’s imperative that your son is wearing his SPC broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen when arriving at Curlew Park. Sunscreen for reapplication will be available for all students throughout the day. Uniform: All students are required to wear their sports uniform, including House shirt, HPE shorts (not rugby, football or basketball), SPC broad-brimmed hat, white socks and running shoes. Year 12 students are permitted to wear their Senior House Shirt.

Transport: Students need to be present at Curlew Park and ready for the carnival by 8:30am. Students catching trains will need to get off at and return home from Sandgate Station. Buses will follow the usual routes and drop off and pick up students at Curlew Park 8:20am and 3:00pm respectively. Parents collecting students after the event are advised to meet their sons along Rainbow St to avoid the usual traffic congestion within Curlew Park. Food & Drink: Please ensure your son has a filled water bottle for the day. Water will be available throughout the day. Tuckshop food and drink will be available from the Curlew Park canteen at designated break times. You attention to the above will contribute to a fantastic carnival. You are most welcome to join us at the carnival for all of the fun, noise, colour and excitement that comes with such a day.

REMINDERS Below are some key matters that need immediate attention by families. Punctuality to School Students need to ensure they are ready for classes before 8:30am. Arriving at or after this time leads to you son being late or unprepared for classes. If there are legitimate reasons for your son’s lateness to school, please ensure they sign in at the Student Office. Hair and Grooming Please ensure that your son’s hair meets our expectations in relation to our Hair and Grooming Policy. We are striving to ensure that we are consistent with applying our policies when following up with students. Your ongoing attention to and continued support of the above reminders and of all College policies and procedures is greatly appreciated. Please contact me or your son’s House Dean if you have any queries or concerns.

For the U16 boys, this tournament forms part of their preparation for the 2015 AIC season, for the Year 12 boys, this was their last opportunity to compete for the College. Some great matches were played with boys demonstrating what it means to be a St. Patrick’s gentleman in the sporting domain. They showed courage and determination, as well as honour and humility, and were great ambassadors for St. Patrick’s. The U16 team placed 2nd in the Honours Division, and the Open boys, who were plagued by injury finished 4th in Division 1. Thanks to Matt and Cooper Grinlaubs for their coaching of the U16 team, Ian Johannessen for driving the bus and parents Amanda Stringfellow, Finola Molloy and Kerry Johannessen for cheering and caring for our boys after hours.
