The following is an excerpt of a Caller article I wrote 10 years ago about ourcongregations vision. In my humble opinion, we have fulfilled much of that vision,
and we should rejoice over the many people who facilitated our realization of that vision.
The vision God offers our church is becoming clearer and clearer. For example, it is clear that we arecalled to provide stronger ministry to and with our youth and young adults, continue to care for ourshut-ins and other members with special needs, strengthen ministry to and with our seniors, and
welcome the stranger in everything we do. We have work to do on our facility to make our church morehospitable and accessible. We will need to develop more small groups for new members to claim FirstChristian Church as home.
Where do you feel a sense of ownership with the vision emerging in our church? Do you feelcommitted to sharing a substantial portion of your time and resources to strengthen youth ministry, young adult ministry, or senior ministry? Have you been sharing your time, talent and resourcesfaithfully for years now, or is the idea of participating in the realization of a collective vision new toyou? Do you hear the voice of the Spirit urging you to increase your giving so we can continue tosupport the part-time Associate Pastors and the important work they do while we expand our staff toinclude a youth ministry coordinator? Where is God calling forth your passion to be a part of therealization of our vision?
The difference between a vision and a dream is commitment. When we embrace a vision, we commitourselves to doing our part to make that vision a reality. Dreams never become reality unless they areformulated into concrete visions, which in turn are fleshed out in concrete goals. First ChristianChurch has ministered effectively in the name of Jesus Christ for 98 years because its members tookownership of the vision God gave them. If we are to realize our collective vision together, each of usmust take ownership of that vision.
What is God calling forth in our congregation today? Surely we are called to continuestrengthening our ministry to and with youth, young adults, seniors, and our homebound or ailingmembers. Most of us see the great benefit weve provided our members and our community throughour small group ministries and educational opportunities. We can also see the value in the efforts
weve made to improve our accessibility, hospitality, and visibility in the community.
What new efforts would God have us make? Are there areas of need within our congregationor our community we are called to address?
As the Council of Elders spends time in prayer and discernment on these questions, I invite allof you to share with us your vision for our church. Email me at [email protected] with your ideasfor our churchs vision. If you prefer, make an appointment with me and share your vision for ourchurch. Talk with Deb Taylor, the chair of our Elders and/or any of our Elders about your concerns, ideas, and inspirations.
Its time for us to review, reshape, and recommit ourselves to a common vision for our church.
Weve come a long way with help from long-standing members, new members, and friends. Where isGod calling us to focus and serve? How can we be Good News people?

MissionTripToJoplinMissouri Eight people attended themeeting held after worship on June 9 to
discuss the possibility of our having a team ofvolunteers go on a Mission Trip to Joplin,Missouri, this fall. After discussion of what'sinvolved in this trip, these dates were chosen
for this trip: Sunday, October 6 throughSaturday, October 12. Those dates will beconfirmed with Disciples Volunteering thisweek to see if there are openings for us toprovide some of the desired group of 25volunteers they hope to have in Joplin thatweek. Those who have indicated that, as ofnow, they plan to go to Joplin are SherryHerrera, Ed Linberg, Craig Wallace and BarryWoodbridge. At least four others wereinterested in going on this trip, but for various
reasons decided they could not participate onthese dates. They were: Phil Forbes, RandyLangston, Paige Richmond and David Styffe. We are grateful to them for their interest in thisproject even though it turned out they will notbe able to be part of it. If you are interested inbeing part of this trip please let Ed Linbergknow of your interest ASAP. Worship Serviceson Sunday are one of the
most tangible ways that we come together tobe filled so that we can go out into the worldand be the hands and feet of Jesus. It is inthose moments that we connect with oneanother, that we sing together, pray togetherand learn something new about the scripturesthat guide us.
Our journey with our emergent worshipservice has been an exciting one. We beganover a year ago on Sunday mornings, and welearned a lot about what we were doing, andspent a lot of time in prayer about where we
felt the spirit leading us. It was after muchdiscernment that we knew the best thing forthe worship service would be to move the timeto the evening. And what a ReFreshing movethat was!
Emergent Worship sounds a bit foreignto many people, so I want to share a little ofwhat you can expect when you come to thisworship experience. Our worship service isnot what many people call contemporary, despite the fact that we have a worship band.Emergent worship is a very experientialservice. As you enter the service you will seedifferent Prayer Encounters sometimescalled Prayer Stations set up throughout thesanctuary. These are available andencouraged to be used at any point during theservice. If you listen to the message better
while doodling, we always have a table withcrayons, markers, and paper for you to engagein that way. We also have a table with candlesand rocks, paper and pens, where you canwrite down your prayer concerns orcelebrations. If you put a prayer under a rockit stays between you and God, if you place aprayer under a candle, we will add it to thechurchs prayer chain. We have 1-2 otherprayer encounters that rotate in order to fit thetheme for the month.
We sing a lot of music, some of it ispraise music, some is secular music that fitsour theme, but all of it is bringing us closer toGod. There is a short message - usually nomore than 6-7 minutes, and partaking ofcommunion that leads into an extended prayertime where you can experience the prayerencounters, pray in your seat, or pray with oneanother.
The experience you have in this worship
service is adaptable to your own style. If youenjoy more interaction, that is encouraged; ifyou want to sit and be surrounded by theexperience, that is available as well.
If you have not made it to our emergentworship service, I invite you to come andexperience something just a little bit different. We would love to experience worship withyou.

We'reCloseToTheFinalCallForEmergencyClean-UpBuckets
Following worship on June 9, Phil Forbes, Coordinator for the EmergencyClean-Up Bucket Project, reported that he received funds for 3 more buckets. This
pushes our total of buckets we'll contribute to 32. How high will the number go? No one knows theanswer to this question yet. However, we do know that we have just two more Sundays before thisproject will wrap up on the final Sunday of this month--June 30. Since the "The Caller" will not bepublished on Sunday 6/23, this is essentially our last reminder to you about this project, which has
had a truly phenomenal response to date. If you'd like to purchase a complete bucket by yourself, orin partnership with others in the congregation, give a check to Phil. Make it payable to our churchand turn it in on either 6/16 or 6/23. Phil will order as many buckets from ACE Hardware ofFullerton as funds allows. The cost of each bucket is $62.14
If you'd like to simply contribute some items from the list of supplies that are to be placed ineach bucket, that's fine too. Be sure to bring in any such items you choose to purchase on, or before,Sunday, June 23.
If you'd like to contribute any amount toward the cost of transportation of these buckets toChurch World Service in Little Rock, Arkansas, that would be appreciated, too. CWS asks that wecontribute $2 per bucket toward their cost in shipping the buckets when they distribute them topeople who will use them to clean up after a disaster. In addition, we will have the cost of shipping
these buckets, which are pretty heavy, to Little Rock, AR. We are working on two possibilities forgetting the buckets shipped as inexpensively as possible through contacts that some of our membershave with a trucking company and with Fed Ex. At this point we don't have specific information as towhether either of those options will work. We hope to have that information no later than June 23.
We hope you will make a special effort to be present for worship on June 30 when we willdedicate these buckets during our 10:15 A.M. worship service. We will be honored by the presence ofJulie Brumana, Coordinator for Church World Service in our Southwest Area, in that worship serviceShe will have a role in the brief ceremony of dedication, along with our Pastors, and possibly otherswhom they will invite to share in the ceremony.
Finally, we are again most grateful to Phil Forbes for his outstanding work in coordinating this
project, as well as to all of you who have contributed the funds needed to fill up the EmergencyClean-up Buckets that we already have on hand. The Outreach Ministry
ExcerptfromDisciplesNewsServiceonCWSbuckets: First Christian Church in Granbury, Texas, received 200 CWS EmergencyClean-up Buckets designated for survivors of as many as three tornadoes that hitGranbury on May 15. Congregants Shanna Snider (pictured) and Don Tatlock (CWSCentral America and Caribbean Liaison, who lives in Granbury) were on hand to
receive the buckets, which will be distributed by Habitat for Humanity as people are allowed to
return to their homes. Commented Snider, "These buckets are so important to people whose homeshave been damaged or destroyed in a disaster. They're really overwhelmed thinking of all the thingsthey have to do. They're not likely to think to put 'Buy soap and gloves' on their to-do list. Butthey're going to need cleaning supplies as soon as they come back home." Photo by Don Tatlock.
