During Lent, I’ve been receiving daily meditations from Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest who I have long admired. I hope you find his reflection below as meaningful as I did:

“Your image of God creates you—or defeats you. There is an absolute connection between how you see God and how you see yourself and the whole universe. The word ‘God’ is first of all a stand-in for everything—reality, truth, and the very shape of your universe. This is why theology is important, and why good theology and spirituality can make so much difference in how you live your daily life in this world. Theology is not just theoretical, but ends up being quite practical—practically up-building or practically defeating.

“After years of giving and receiving spiritual direction, it has become obvious to me and to many of my colleagues that most peoples’ operative, de facto image of God is initially a subtle combination of their Mom and their Dad, or any early authority figures. Without an interior journey of prayer or experience, much of religion is largely childhood conditioning, which God surely understands and works with. But this is what atheists and many former believers rightly react against because such religion is so childish and often fear-based, even if their arguments are blowing down a straw man. The goal, of course, is to grow toward an adult religion that includes both reason and faith and inner experience that you can trust. A mature God creates mature people. A big God creates big people.

“If your Mom was punitive, your God is usually punitive too, and you actually spend much of your life submitting to that punitive God or angrily reacting against it. If your Dad (or your minister or early God teachers) were cold and withdrawn, you will assume that God is cold and withdrawn—all Scriptures, Jesus, and mystics to the contrary. If all authority in your life came through males, you probably prefer a male image of God, even if your heart says otherwise. As we were taught in Scholastic philosophy, ‘everything is received according to the manner of the receiver.’ This is one of those things hidden in plain sight, but still remains well hidden to most Christians.

“Frankly, if your early authority figures were merciful and forgiving, you have a great big emotional head start in understanding the Gospel and who God might really be. This is why denominational affiliations in the end mean very little. Yes, good theology and preaching will help, but I have met evangelicals with very limited theology who are bright and alive. They invariably had a bright and alive upbringing, and their hearts tend to be generous.

“I also meet Mainline Christians with a more expansive theology who nevertheless are dour and dominating. They invariably had an early worldview that was all about counting, measuring, making inner lists, and doling out rewards and punishments. The expansive and open world of grace will actually be a scandal to them. They are upset because God is so ‘generous’ (see Matthew 20:16). Such people find it sincerely hard to live in the frame of reference which Jesus calls ‘the Reign of God.’ They are much more secure in a meritocracy of quid pro quo and resent anyone getting anything they have not worked for and ‘deserved.’

“This is all mirrored in our political worldviews, of course. Good theology makes for good politics and positive social relationships. Bad theology makes for stingy politics, xenophobia, and highly-controlled relationships. No wonder that both Freud and Jung believed that low-level religion creates mostly ‘anal retentive’ people, to use a rather unkind but truly descriptive phrase.

“For me as a Christian, the mostly undeveloped image of God as Trinity is the way out and the way through all limited concepts of God. Jesus comes to invite us into that flow—which only flows in one entirely positive direction.

“Both God as Trinity and Jesus as the ‘image of the invisible God’ reveal a God quite different—and much better—than the Santa Claus god who is ‘making a list, checking it twice, going to find out who’s naughty or nice’ or ‘I will torture you if you do not love me’ god (worse than your worst enemy, I would think). We must be honest and admit that this is the god that most people are still praying to. Such images are an unworkable basis for any real spirituality.

“Trinity reveals that God is the Divine Flow under, around, and through all things—much more a verb than a noun; relationship itself rather than an old man sitting on a throne. Jesus tells us that God is like a loving parent, who runs toward us while we are ‘still a long ways off’ (Luke 15:20), then clasps, and kisses us. Until this is personally experienced, most of Christianity does not work. This theme moves us quickly into practice-based religion (orthopraxy) over mere words and ideas (orthodoxy).

Thank You Last Monday morning when I arrived at work, this is what I found inside the door. “Oh my” I thought, what do I do with

all these clothes? In the afternoon, a real “God Shot” occurred. Susie Wright happened by the office and I told her about the jackets donated by Burlington Coat Factory. She immediately picked up her phone, made a call to Coast to Coast Foundation, a non-profit group founded by Marie Avena of Coast to Coast Property Search. Within 45 minutes, three young ladies were at the front door to take all the jackets to their storage facility where Cpl J.D. DeCaprio, Homeless Liaison Officer, and his crew of four other officers from the Fullerton Police Dept. have access to help those in need. Jerry Brown (the one in Fullerton) Save the Dates July 13 – 17 - General Assembly, Orlando, FL August 24 & 25 – First Christian Annual Homecoming Weekend The Senior Book Club The Senior Book Club has chosen “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” by Rachel Joyce for our next book. We will discuss it on March 28, 2013 at Mary Brill’s home. One of the themes of this novel is how a seemingly ordinary life can take on extraordinary aspects. It’s an unassuming story with immense emotional weight without being melodramatic. Join us in reading this beautifully written book.

Summer Camp is Coming! It’s time to start planning for

Summer Camp for our children and youth. Scholarship applications are due on or before April 30. For forms and more information, see Debra Todd or check with Donna in the office. Here is the schedule: Mini Camp - 7/7 – 7/10 $260 before June 7 (2nd & 3rd Grade in fall 2013) Junior Camp – 6/23 – 6/29 $355 before May23 (4th – 6th grade in fall 2013) Chi Rho Camp – 6/30 - 7/6 $355 before May 30 (7th - 8th grade in fall 2013) CYF I Camp – 7/21 -7/27 $355 before June 21 (9th – 10th grade in fall 2013) CYF!! Camp – 7/28 – 8/3 $355 before June 28 (11th – 12th in fall 2013 and 2013 graduates) Costs after Early Bird deadline are: $285 for Mini Camp, and $380 for all the other camps. Preschool Assistance Fund A "temporary" fund has been established to assist the Child Care staff as they look for new jobs. 1) Checks may be written to First Christian Church. In the memo line write Child Care Staff. 2) Monies collected in February were evenly distributed among the childcare staff.on March 1, 2013 4) The second disbursement will be made on April 1, 2013. Food-Loving Guys (and Gals!) One of Pathways of Hope’s

fundraising events is coming up Saturday, March 23, 6 - 9 P.M. at the new Fullerton Community Center. They are in need of chefs to prepare small servings (200) of their favorite dish. (Each chef receives two complimentary event tickets.) This year they will be celebrating Pathways of Hope’s accomplishments in Orange County. If you would like to know more about what Pathways does and how you might get involved, this would be a great event to attend. This year First Christina Church of Fullerton is the inaugural recipient of the “Friends of Pathways” award. Tickets are $55 per person in advance (deadline March 12) or $65 at the door. If you need more information on how to be a chef or how to make a reservation, Donna in the office can answer your questions. Let’s have a good turnout from FCCF. Do you like the coffee time on Sundays? Do you enjoy having a cup of coffee and chat with your friends on Sunday mornings? We need help to continue this social time. It is a BIG job when only a few are doing all the work. Won’t you consider helping? The coffee cart is put out before the 8 a.m. service, refilled during the 9 a.m. hour and then replenished in time for the end of the 10:15 service and then, of course, there is the clean-up. If you can help at any of these times, Judi Smedley (714-738-7337) would love to talk to you. If we can get a larger team to serve then none of us have to be here from 8 a.m. – noon every Sunday. All Church Study The All-Church study for 2013 will focus on different approaches to prayer, exposing participants to various prayer practices and empowering each person to pray in a fashion that suits his or her personality, time, and context. Some of the prayer practices will be more quiet and contemplative and others will be more active and engaged. Some will be centered around Scripture reading, others around quiet connection with God, and still others around prayer needs and requests. Some practices can be engaged anywhere, for any length of time, and others require a bit of preparation. Wouldn't you like to grow closer to God and more comfortable with prayer? Join other members of our church as we explore how we might "pray without ceasing." Week Two of the ACS will offer an introduction to active prayer. Participants will learn about body praying and walking prayers. The small groups will have the opportunity to learn a body prayer attributed to the mystic Julian of Norwich, as well as other physical forms of praying. Participants will also learn about meditative prayer walks, and using labyrinths. We will have a large labyrinth available in Chapman lounge throughout the week for the small groups to use during their groups, or for individuals to come in and spend some time walking the labyrinth. Those who have a hard time sitting still will find a meaningful way to connect with God in prayer while their bodies are in motion. Hot Meal Ministry Team A is on tap to help out with our Hot Meals Ministry, Wednesday, March 6. Team Members should be there at 5:30 P.M. Please find a substitute if you are unable to make it. Reexamining Bible Verses Relating to Homosexuality Class "The Illumination of Context: Reexamining Bible Verses Relating to Homosexuality" The Bible mentions homosexual acts in several places, but what did homosexuality signify to the cultures existing when these verses were written? At 9:00 A.M. on Sunday, March 17, this study will focus on the Old Testament verses and ancient Hebrew culture. On March 24, the New Testament verses and 1st-century Judeo-Christian and Roman Empire cultures will be explored. FCC member Randy Baxter has studied the issue of homosexuality and the Bible for the past twenty years, and has taught a similar study at annual conferences of Evangelicals Concerned With Reconciliation, a national organization of gays and lesbians from theologically conservative backgrounds. Randy's training as a history professor also enabled him to more accurately contextualize the Bible verses that relate to both homosexuality in particular and Christian sexuality in general. Congregational Meeting Minutes 2/17/13 Deb Taylor called the meeting to order at 11:20 a.m. Barbara Hasty moved we approve the Welcoming Statement as presented. Comments were shared and questions were answered. Cambria Findley-Grubb moved that we accept the O&A committee’s recommendation and become an Open & Affirming congregation. No second was needed. Paper ballots were distributed and counted. Results: Welcoming Statement passed with 75 yes, 17 no votes Open & Affirming passed with 73 yes, 20 no votes Budget was brought to the congregation from the Property & Stewardship Ministry Team. Tim Acquistapace moved that we accept budget as presented. No second needed. Questions were asked and answered to the best of our abilities. Motion passed. Tri-Tip Project Is On! Based on in-put from Tom Beck and Dirk McCuen, Co-

coordinators for the 2013 Tri-Tip/Bratwurst Project in conjunction with Downtown Market, the project is on. Tom reports that he has some 35 volunteers who want to be part of this project, which will involve selling these popular sandwiches, plus soft drinks and/or water, on Thursdays from 4 P.M. TO 8 P.M. from April 5 through October 31. With this level of interest and support, the Outreach Ministry voted at its Feb. 20 meeting to move ahead with this project this year. In light of that decision, here's some very important information for all of you, especially those of you who have volunteered to be part of this project. 1. Please put Wednesday, March 13, on your calendar for an Organizational Meeting at 7 P.M.in Chapman Lounge. If you are one of the volunteers, but can't attend that evening, be sure to inform Tom Beck or Dirk McCuen that you will miss this meeting. Otherwise, we'll see you on March 13. 2. If you have volunteered, have you turned in the form distributed to all volunteers that asks you to indicate the dates on which you will be available to work between April and October? Tom informed us that he did not have very many of these completed forms as of Sunday February 24. The forms are needed ASAP so that Tom and Dirk can set up the work schedule for all of the Thursdays on which the Downtown Market will be open this year. Many thanks to all of you who have made it possible for us to continue the Tri-Tip/Bratwurst Project to raise funds to undergird a variety of outreach ministries (yet to be determined by the Outreach Ministry) this year. Week Of Compassion Wrap-Up The 2013 Week of Compassion

Offering found us raising $976.13 towards our goal of $2,200. We anticipate that some additional gifts will be received this coming Sunday, March 3, as we understand that at least one child forgot to bring their Week of Compassion Offering Box last Sunday. That's okay. Gifts from both children and adults will still be welcome this Sunday. We are grateful to every individual and family who shared in the 2013 Week of Compassion offering. On a personal note, I hope that the 2013 Week of Compassion Sharing Calendar increased awareness of the great disparity that exists between us and most people living in the world when it comes to income and resources for sustaining life. I was personally impressed by several of the categories that confronted me in that calendar. Here are two of them that particularly impacted me. . . . In Malawi, elderly women walk 6 miles each day to collect wood for cooking and heating. I walk a mile to a mile and a half each day and the only thing I pick up is recyclable items such as aluminum cans, plastic cups etc. that people throw out of their cars. The calendar suggested that I give one unit for every 6 trees I saw on my walk that day. I lost track of the number of trees I saw within a block of my house. . . . Over 250,000 refugees have fled the fighting in Syria, many arriving in neighboring countries with only the clothes on their back. Contribute one unit for each five changes of clothing that you own. I thought about the contents of my closet and chest of drawers. I quickly counted 2 suits, 6 sport coats, 4 pairs of slacks and 5 pairs of shoes. Then I began thinking about my shirts--dress shirts, sport shirts, golf shirts, as well as jeans, casual pants and more, plus jackets, socks and underwear. I realized that I have at least 25 times 5 changes of clothes and decided not to try to figure out the actual number of changes of clothes I own, even though I gave away a bunch of clothes in recent months. These two categories on the calendar, plus all of the rest of them, made us realize that we live very comfortably compared with the majority of the world's population. Knowing this, we joyfully gave to the 2013 Week of Compassion Offering. Ed Linberg, Chair Outreach Ministry Team

Anyone Interested In A Mission Trip Later This Year? At its meeting on February 20, the Outreach Ministry discussed the possibility of our having an intergenerational mission trip this year similar to the one that saw 7 of our members, including 2 children, 2 youth and 3 adults, go to Lake Charles, Louisiana for a week several years ago. The consensus was that we'd like to see this happen again this year. This article is the initial effort to determine the interest in a mission trip, most likely this summer. At this point in the process there are more questions than answers. Some of the questions are: 1. Where will we go? 2. What will we do? 3. How much will it cost? 4. When will it happen? The destination of a mission trip will depend on several factors. However, we know that the Disciples have an on-going need for work teams in these communities: Joplin, MO; Tuscaloosa, AL; plus both Slidell and Lake Charles, LA. It is expected that teams will also be able to work in the areas hit by Hurricane Sandy this past year, but no sites have yet been established. What is needed at each site is a variety of workers to help with clean-up and reconstruction in these communities that were devastated by deadly storms in recent years. The cost will depend upon where we go and is unknown at this time. The date of this activity is also not known, though we'd like it to be summer so that any youth who'd like to participate may do so. Once we have an idea of the interest in such a venture, we'll work on the issues of cost and scheduling. If you have any interest in being part of a mission trip this summer, or perhaps this fall, please give your name to Ed Linberg, Chair, Outreach Ministry Team. If you give him your name, please also provide this information to him: dates you are available; the amount you'd be able to pay toward your trip; and a preference, if you have one, of the area to which you'd like to go on a mission trip. Please express you interest to Ed,

even if it is minimal at this time, no later than Sunday, March 17. This will allow the

Outreach Ministry to discuss this matter further when it meets on March 20. If a week-long Mission Trip is not for you, we remind you that there will be opportunities to engage in one or two-day mission projects prior to the General Assembly to be held in Orlando, Florida, July 13-17. We would love to have some of our members be part of a mission project in conjunction with the General Assembly and to stay on to represent us at the General Assembly. Let us know ASAP if this also interests you. Times will be ½ hour segments. We will need people who are willing to be at the church from 8 – 11 P.M, March 28; 11p.m. March 28 – 2 A.M. March 29; 2 A.M. – 5 A.M. March 29 and 5 A.M. – 8 A.M. March 29. Be thinking about what times we want to pray and whether you would be able to handle on of these shifts. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex next week.
