California Weather-Hydro Conditions during January 2009 As of January 31, 2009, statewide hydrologic conditions were as follows: precipitation, 65 percent of average to date; runoff, 35 percent of average to date; and reservoir storage, 65 percent of average for the date. The snowpack was at about 60 percent of its average value for the date. Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through January 31, 2009 was about 2.1 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 36 percent of average. (On January 31, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was about 2.9 MAF or about 51 percent of average.) For California statewide, January 2009 was the eighth driest January on record, with precipitation at about 30 percent of average for the month. In general, temperatures were significantly above average. On February 1, 2009, the Northern Sierra 8-station Precipitation Index had accumulated a seasonal total of 17.7 inches, which is 66% of the seasonal average to date and 35% of an average Water Year (50.0 inches). During January 2009, the 8-Station Index received only 3.1 inches, about 34% of average. Last year at this time, the 8-Station Index had 25.1 inches for the seasonal total. California Weather-Hydro Conditions during January 2009

California Weather-Hydro Conditions during February 2009

As of March 1, 2009, statewide hydrologic conditions were as follows: precipitation, 80 percent of average to date; runoff, 45 percent of average to date; and reservoir storage, 70 percent of average for the date. The snowpack was at about 75 percent of its average value for the date. Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through February 28, 2009 was about 4.1 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 48 percent of average. (On February 28, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was about 4.5 MAF or about 53 percent of average.) For California statewide, precipitation for February was well above average. The Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index gained 11.9 inches, about 149 percent of average. This trend continued into early March. By March 10, the 8-Stations had gained an additional 6.4 inches, about 93 percent of the entire monthly average. As of March 11, the 8-Station water year total to date was 36.0 inches, about 97 percent of the seasonal average and 72 percent of an average water year (50 inches).

As of April 1, 2009, statewide hydrologic conditions were as follows: precipitation, 80 percent of average to date; runoff, 55 percent of average to date; and reservoir storage, 80 percent of average for the date. The snowpack was at about 80 percent of its average value for the date. Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through March 31, 2009 was about 7.1 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 63 percent of average. (On March 31, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was about 5.9 MAF or about 52 percent of average.) As of April 1, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index water year total to date was 37.8 inches, about 91 percent of the seasonal average and 76 percent of an average water year (50 inches).

The snowpack was at about 65 percent of its average value for the date. Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through April 30, 2009 was about 8.6 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 63 percent of average. (On April 30, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was about 7.2 MAF or about 53 percent of average.) As of May 8, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index water year total to date was 44.9 inches, about 98 percent of the seasonal average and 90 percent of an average water year (50 inches).

Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through June 30, 2009 was about 11.9 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 69 percent of average. (On June 30, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was about 9.3 MAF or about 54 percent of average.) As of July 1, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index water year total to date was 46.3 inches, about 95 percent of the seasonal average to date and 93 percent of an average water year (50 inches). The total for June was 1.3 inches, about 130 of average for the month. Last year on July 1, the seasonal total to date was 34.9 inches, about 72 percent of the average to date.

As of September 1, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index water year total to date was 46.5 inches, about 95 percent of the seasonal average to date and 93 percent of an average water year (50 inches). Last year on August 1, the seasonal total to date was 34.9 inches, about 71 percent of the average to date.

California Weather-Hydro Conditions during October 2009

As of October 31, 2009, the end of the first month of Water Year 2010, statewide hydrologic conditions were as follows: precipitation, 185 percent of average to date; runoff, 120 percent of average to date; and reservoir storage, 80 percent of average for the date. Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through October 31, 2009 was about 0.5 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 100 percent of average. (On October 31, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was about 0.3 MAF, or about 65 percent of average.) On October 31, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index Water Year total was 4.6 inches, about 153 percent of the seasonal average to date (and for the month of October) and about 9 percent of an average water year (50 inches). Last year on October 31, the seasonal total to date was 3.1 inches, about 103 percent of the seasonal average to date. October was cooler and much wetter than normal for most of California. An unusually strong, early-season storm, pushed monthly rainfall totals for many locations to well above normal. This mid-month storm was accompanied by strong winds and intense rain.

As of November 30, 2009, statewide hydrologic conditions were as follows: precipitation, 75 percent of average to date; runoff, 70 percent of average to date; and reservoir storage, 75 percent of average for the date. Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through November 30, 2009 was about 0.9 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 66 percent of average. (On November 30, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was also about 0.9 MAF, or about 66 percent of average.) On November 30, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index Water Year total was 6.9 inches, about 74 percent of the seasonal average to date and about 14 percent of an average water year (50 inches). Last year on November 30, the seasonal total to date was 8.6 inches, about 92 percent of the seasonal average to date. In general, November was dry and mild across California. The Northern Sierra 8-Station Index had just 2.2 inches of precipitation, about 35 percent of normal. Temperatures were near average for most of the State.

California Weather-Hydro Conditions during December 2009

As of December 31, 2009, statewide hydrologic conditions were as follows: precipitation, 85 percent of average to date; runoff, 40 percent of average to date; and reservoir storage, 75 percent of average for the date. Sacramento River unimpaired runoff observed through December 31, 2009 was about 1.5 million acre-feet (MAF), which is about 47 percent of average. For comparison, on December 31, 2008, the observed Sacramento River unimpaired runoff through that date was about 1.4 MAF, or about 44 percent of average. On December 31, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Precipitation Index Water Year total was 13.6 inches, about 77 percent of the seasonal average to date and about 26 percent of an average water year (50 inches). Last year on December 31, 2008, the seasonal total to date was 14.6 inches, about 82 percent of the seasonal average to date. In general, December was wetter in the central and southern portions of the State. On December 31, the southern Sierra had about 100 percent of normal snow water equivalent. In contrast, the northern Sierra, the snowpack was about 80 percent of normal. By January 7, the San Joaquin 5-Station Precipitation Index had about 100 percent of the seasonal total to date, as opposed to about 70 percent in the Northern Sierra.
