Chapter 6

The Higher Provincialism

1908: Josiah Royce published “Race Questions, Provincialism, and Other American Problems”

The main article in his book was the essay “Provincialism”

he focused a lot of his time on the provinces in the United States, especially the province of California

The Higher Provincialism

Many other authors wrote books and essays on their experiences in California, such as Bayard Taylor, Hinton Rowan, Alexandre Dumas, and Mark Twain.

The Higher Provincialism

as the twentieth century was coming closer, many travelers, as well as artists and writers, started to make their way into Southern California, and many hotels and universities we know of now came about then

Chapter 10

O Brave New World!

Throughout California history, many great technological advances have been made to put California as “an American place”

many advances have been the completion of the transcontinental railroad, mining technology, hydroelectricity, airplane perfection, vacuum tube technology, and many others

O Brave New World!

A great change occurred with observatories, like the one pictured on Palomar Mt.

Because of these large observatories across California, astronomy has taken off

O Brave New World!

Universities all over California have contributed to these advances as well

UCSD, for example, helped work and develop a scientific research centered campus to allow students and others to find more in what is around us all
