HOT SPRINGS AREA QUILT GUILD MINUTES

We met on January 27, 2012 at National Park Hospital in the Fordyce Room. We had a nice pre-meeting social time with snacks. We thank the members who provided our food and drinks.

New President Beth Wynn called the meeting to order at 6PM. Wilma Blair introduced our speaker for the evening Renne Dickins from the Vera Lloyd Childrens Home. She had a presentation film for us to see the campus and homes. She had many special stories about the children from 8-18 years of age. They are starting a transitional program and home for ages 18 and over to further help in their lives.

She answered questions from the audience and we all enjoyed her presentation. We presented her with the quilts we have made this last year. They are greatly appreciated by the children.

We had 38 members present and 2 new members joined. We had one guest.

Previous minutes will stand as approved and the treasurers report is printed in the newsletter.

Sunshine committee report: Betty Lawson is still waiting for surgery to replace her knee. Jackie Peake is in the hospital recovering from surgery. Cards would surely be appreciated and also for Jan Taylors husband, Richard.

The 3rd Wed. Be is planning workshops in March, April, and May to work on projects for the boutique. Projects and supply list will be given at a later date. This is to make one item for yourself and make another to give to the boutique at the quilt show. An e-mail will be sent before each class.

A card was read from Betty Lawson thanking all for her calls and cards that she has received.

Norma Welch spoke about the Trading Patches program. Christmas 6 patches will be continued for 2 more months.

Edie Landreth presented our new Block of the Month an antique block from the 1800s will be made each month. A pattern will be in every newsletter, so be sure and read your newsletter. You have a choice of a 9 or 12 block. Each month bring your finished block to show.

We will have a calendar of events printed each month in the newsletter. This will tell of all the programs and workshops, so be sure to check your calendar each month.

Our food list will be printed on the calendar by alphabetical order. February providers will be from S-A.

The first installment of the Mystery Quilt will be in the February Newsletter.

We are going to have a white elephant table/sale. Bring items from your sewing room priced and ready to sell. The money will go to the guild.

We will have a birthday basket - in your month you may choose two fat quarters.

Antique Block Challenge

Description:

For this challenge, each month we will be distributing instructions for making a different quilt block from an older obscure block pattern that we dont commonly see. All of the block patterns are from the 1890s. Directions will be given for making the block in both 12" and 9" (finished) sizes, so you can make whichever size blocks you prefer. At the end of the year you will have enough blocks to make a sampler quilt top depending on how you want to set them. In December, we will also have an optional 13th block instruction for those who want to set their blocks on point in 13 blocks layout (3-2-3-2-3) layout rather than a conventional 3 x 4 layout of 12 blocks. Obviously, you can make more than the 12 blocks if you want a larger quilt. Since you will be making these blocks from your stash, you are free to use whatever fabrics you want. The blocks will be distributed in order of complexity, with the January block being the easiest one and the December block being the more complex one. But all should be relatively easy for a quilter of even modest experience level to piece, i.e., no curved piecing, no paper piecing, no set in seams, etc.

Signing up:

We will have a signup sheet at the January guild meeting for signing up to join the challenge. If you want to join the challenge later in the year, you will still be able to do so by getting the block patterns that have been distributed so far from the challenge chairperson.

Getting The Block Instructions:

When signing up for the block challenge, you will indicate on the sign-up sheet how you want to receive the instructions, i.e., either by email (free and in color!) or a printed hard copy (black and white copy for 25 cents each month, funds to go to the guild). The emailed instructions for each month will be distributed the day after each guild meeting. Each months instructions are in a PDF document and will be distributed in both sizes (12 x 9). The instructions include rotary cutting directions along with a diagram of how the pieces are to be put together to form the block.

Monthly Show and Tell:

During each monthly guild meeting, the challenge chairperson will show the completed block for the current month and encourage those who have made their blocks for the previous month to show theirs as well. Sometime in early to mid 2013, well have a reveal at one of our guild meetings to show what everyone made for the challenge.
