Weekly Wisdom

Conquest and Judges – Part 1

The Israelites Enter the Promised LandJoshua leads the children of Israel victoriously into the

Promised Land. God tells Joshua that He will be with him wherever he goes and to stay strong and be courageous. Joshua sends two spies into Jericho where Rahab hides and protects the spies. For her faith in God, Rahab and her family are kept safe during the battle. Rahab’s life is a lesson to remember, “see how a person is justified by his works and not by faith alone.” (James 2:24-26) The people of Israel win the battle at Jericho because they listened to Joshua and trusted in God. The people put God first and followed His structured and orderly plan.

God has a plan for all of us. We are all called to the good fight of faith. “Pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11-12) At the end of Joshua’s life, he reminds the people to keep God’s laws and put God first. We also are reminded to put God first, to stay strong and be courageous. God will be with us where we go. “Choose this day whom you will serve.”

We prepare for everything we consider important in life. And that includes Christmas. We visit family and friends, bake cookies, decorate our trees, and shop for gifts until we’re ready to drop.

This year, prepare for Christmas in a different way Join us for Best Advent Ever, a free email program that will help you slow down and prepare for Christmas in a unique way. Please do not bring larger stuffed animals – only “Beanie Babies” size. Label them with “The Chosen” or “Susie Stefonowich” and put them by Alfie’s office. Our Chosen friends thank you.

“CREATION CARE CORNER”This article is adapted from Richard Rohr, OFM, “Introduction,” “Evidence,” Oneing, vol. 2, no. 2 (Center for Action and

Contemplation: 2014), 13-14. He opens with a quote from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter 8.“The whole of creation is eagerly waiting for the full revelation of the children of God....From the beginning until now, the entire

creation, as we know, has been groaning in one great act of giving birth.”Richard Rohr, OFM, interprets this passage as referring to evolution. He writes, “in this familiar passage, St. Paul seems to fully

assume evolution ..., which gives such a dynamic notion of God.” For the most part, Christians have a very static notion of God, which interfered/interferes with the ever developing understanding of God through the ages. An inner experience of God dictates that God is predictably developmental and unfolding. Even resurrection was understood as a one-time anomaly concerning only Jesus, while St. Paul and many of the Church Fathers clearly saw resurrection as a portent and promise for all of creation. “Life and love are always cumulative, diffusive and expanding.” Fr. Rohr maintains “that if our God is both incarnate and implanted, Christ and the Holy Spirit, then an unfolding inner dynamism in all creation is not only certain, but also moving in a positive direction, with a divine goal that is always set before us.” He believes the truth is we are “children of the resurrection and we are both burdened and brightened by a cosmic and irrepressible hope. We are both burdened and brightened with the gift of an optimism whose headwaters are not rational or provable, and yet endlessly knowable by scientists and mystics whose hearts and minds are humble.”https://cac.org/evolution-2017-10-25/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2017-10-28%20DM&utm_content=2017-10-28%20DM+CID_cf6cda354583f3e5a96400983cb2f8ef&utm_source=Campaign%20Monitor%20Google%20Analytics&utm_term=Wednesday“Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”
