We collected the finished products in the staffroom this week and they look absolutely brilliant. The decorations, that take inspiration from the Chinese ethnic community and the Aboriginal community, are colourful and very symbolic of the theme of the event – Connecting Communities. This will be my first year attending the 5 Lands Walk, as I would usually be found on a winter Saturday at the netball courts at Adcock Park. I’ve taken the morning off this year to see our Stage 1 dance group and 2K, who will be performing on the morning – very early! Please come along to support them and share in the fun and excitement of this great community event. Sport is like school Like many of you, I stayed up on Tuesday night to watch the Australian football (soccer) team win a place in the World Cup in Brazil next year. It was a tense game right until the end as the stakes were high (a spot in the World Cup); and the commentators at the end were talking about the coach’s brave decisions making team changes to achieve the win. This got me thinking about how a sporting team is like the teaching team here. Our staff meetings are like weekly training sessions and school development days are like boot camp where teachers learn new things and become inspired to test out new ways of doing things to improve their game. I think our teaching team here is World Cup material and they are working very hard to play their best and get the best possible results. As the coach of this terrific team, I watch the game closely from the sideline and provide suggestions to improve our chance of winning and make team changes to get the best results. In between games, the school executive team, evaluate past work and plan strategy to improve our next move. We reflect on our coaching techniques to get the best from everyone. Our school team works best when our supporters are cheering us on too. I think our school is on track to be a champion in the Welcome to Better Schools: A National Plan for School Improvement. 5 Lands Walk This term our students have been working on 1500

decorations that participants in the 5 Lands Walk will use to

decorate the path from MacMasters Beach to Copacabana on Saturday.

We collected the finished products in the staffroom this

week and they look absolutely brilliant. The decorations, that take inspiration from the Chinese ethnic community

and the Aboriginal community, are colourful and very symbolic of the theme of the event – Connecting Communities.

This will be my first year attending the 5 Lands Walk, as I would usually be found on a winter Saturday at the netball

Sport is like school

Like many of you, I stayed up on Tuesday night to watch the Australian football (soccer) team win a place in the

World Cup in Brazil next year.

It was a tense game right until the end as the stakes were

high (a spot in the World Cup); and the commentators at the end were talking about the coach’s brave decisions

making team changes to achieve the win.

This got me thinking about how a sporting team is like the teaching team here. Our staff meetings are like weekly

training sessions and school development days are like boot camp where teachers learn new things and become inspired

to test out new ways of doing things to improve their game.

I think our teaching team here is World Cup material and they are working very hard to play their best and get the

best possible results. As the coach of this terrific team, I watch the game closely from the sideline and provide

suggestions to improve our chance of winning and make

team changes to get the best results. In between games, the school executive team, evaluate past work and plan

strategy to improve our next move. We reflect on our coaching techniques to get the best from everyone. Our

school team works best when our supporters are cheering us on too.

I think our school is on track to be a champion in the

KINDER 2014

Do you have a child who is starting school at KPS next year?

Please call in at the office and leave your details so that we can add your child to our list. If you have a neighbour/relative whose child is starting school in 2014

please pass on this information to them.

Cruch&Sip

Winter fruits Students have crunched their way through the delicious

nectarines, peaches and grapes for summer, and are now

looking forward to fresh, crisp apples and juicy oranges available in winter.

However, large pieces of fruit can be difficult for small

children to manage, especially with wiggly teeth! On top of this small children take a long time to eat a large apple,

orange or pear and they can be quite messy, especially if they’re fresh and juicy.

Now that the delicious winter fruit is available, try and

choose small to medium pieces of fruit to send for Cruch&Sip. Or you could chop up a large piece into

smaller, more manageable pieces for your child to enjoy.

How can I make fruit and vegetables more appealing

to my child?

Research has found that children prefer small, cold, crispy, juicy and sweet fruits and colourful, crisp, fresh vegeta-

bles. Try the following tips to encourage children to enjoy fruit and vegetables:

Buy a variety of seasonal fresh fruit so your child

doesn't become bored. Involve your child in choosing what fruit and

vegetables to buy. Give them small, hand sized pieces.

Cut large fruit and vegetables into small manageable pieces.

Make ‘vegiepeople’ with your child.

Freeze small pieces of fruit as an ice snack (try pineapple wedges, orange quarters or grapes).

Congratulations Year 1 KPS Dance Troupe

On Monday night, 16 Year 1 students performed at the

Central Coast Dance Festival at Laycock Theatre. Their item was called “My School” and they looked fabulous in

their bright sparkly costumes and remembered their big smiles. The children demonstrated all of our ‘You Can Do

It’ skills both on the night and leading up to the performance. I was most impressed by the confidence and

bravery they displayed to get up on a big professional stage and have a ‘red hot go’ at dancing. KPS can be very

proud to know that our group received many compliments about their efforts and behaviour on the night from other

teachers and staff. Well Done on a fantastic effort. Mrs Fell

Debating News

On Friday Kincumber hosted Copacabana in a round of the Central Coast Debating Competition. The topic was; “Parents should only allow their kids to use the computer on the weekends” and we were the negative team.

Georgia, our team captain, led our team into the debate starting our team line, “computers are for using not for leaving alone”. She skilfully rebutted our opponents’ points and set up Kaela to continue our line. With Kaela’s excellent points and rebuttals the team was in a great position and then it was all up to Izzy. She did amazing rebuttals and brought our team home to victory but we couldn’t do it without our team adviser Sammy.

Then we all settled down with Copacabana with our morning tea and had a little chat. Then the adjudicator called both teams, including the chair person (myself) to sit down so she can give us tips. After that we said bye to Copacabana and they left.
