Host Families are needed for international exchange students. Cultural Homestay International, a non-profi t educational exchange organization, is looking for host homes for international high school students for fall semester 2013. These students are from Asia, Europe, and South America and need caring, fl exible families with whom to share the learning experience of a lifetime. Hosting is a great way to promote peace through understanding, to learn about the world, and to share your corner of it. Host Families provide room and board. Students have insurance and pay their own school and personal expenses. Interested? Call Sarah Tandy, 230.5388

FIND YOUR PLACE AT HOLLIS ACADEMYAs FPC enters its third year of ministry at Hollis Academy, it’s time to begin thinking about how YOU can become involved there. This local elementary school located 2.5 miles from our church campus serves over 600 students, with 98 percent living at or below the poverty level. While your many generous gifts have been appreciated and needed in our ministry, the physical presence of volunteers with the children of Hollis is where real life-change has begun. Please prayerfully consider becoming involved this year in one of these areas of ministry: Room Parents, Reading Buddies, Good News Club, or Classroom Tutors.Talk to a Hollis volunteer this Sunday in Fellowship Hall, Memorial Hall, or the Loggia, or contact Beth Simmons, 787.3159 or hollis@fi rstpresgreenville.org.

2013-14 BUDGET AVAILABLEOur 2013-14 Budget can be found online at
F i r s t P r e s G r e e n v i l l e . o r g /fi nanceandstewardship.htm and
in the literature racks around the church.Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Enclosed you will find the approved budget for the fiscal year which
began on July 1, 2012, and will run through June 30, 2013. Please
remember that the church fiscal year beginning in July will not affect
giving in any way. We will continue to have our pledge season in
November, and year-end statements will continue to reflect your
contributions from January 1 through December 31.
This budget represents just under a 3 percent increase compared
to the budget for this past fiscal year. The majority of the increase
is to cover expenses associated with the exit from the PC(USA).
Additionally, the salaries and benefits line has a budgeted increase
this year. This includes money for the addition of a position that will
work specifically with the females in the Junior High and Senior High
ministries. The church is also forecasting a 20 percent increase in the
cost of employee medical benefits this year.
The session reached a settlement with the Foothills Presbytery
of the PC(USA) just prior to the congregational vote to exit the
denomination in May. It has been well noted in recent months that
the church will maintain all of its property upon exiting the PC(USA);
however, the financial burden to exit will total $367,000. This cost
will be spread over the next four years. The settlement reached is
equitable, but it will put some additional pressure on our budget
in the upcoming years. The first-year obligation to the PC(USA) is
reflected in the attached budget. Despite the cost obligation, the
opportunity to move to the ECO is very exciting and will afford many
new opportunities.
Thank you for your support of First Presbyterian Church. We have an
extremely generous congregation and praise God for that. Our church
supports a large number of outreach activities, as can be seen by the
list of missionaries and agencies inside. We also have a dynamic and
growing congregation that wants to serve the Lord and do His will.
Please recognize that the Session and Finance Committee are
committed to being good stewards of the financial resources you
provide. As the new program year begins, please prayerfully consider
how you support your church and the work that it does for our
congregation, the community, and the world. If you have not
consistently given or gotten involved, please challenge yourself to do
so this year. It will allow you to see personally how God can impact
your life.
Sincerely,
Scott Melzer
Chairman, Finance Committee

In this seminar, Dr. James Wanliss—university physics professor, space scientist, and expert reviewer for the United Nations IPCC—explains the emergence of environmentalism and Dark Green religion and why the Church, particularly young people, risk modifying the gospel in favor of ecocentric sensibilities. Is this good or bad for the church and society? This seminar is for those wanting to understand the worldview, theology, ethics, and politics of the Green movement and to have those views subjected to a penetrating, biblically grounded critique by a practicing scientist and Christian.
Dr. Wanliss is author of the book, Resisting the Green Dragon –
Dominion, Not Death.
