Sanctuary Church? Ad hoc committee forming

Reports of immigration raids, along with the TrumpAdministration’s stand on immigrationand deportation of undocumentedimmigrants has caused some churches to declarethemselves “SanctuaryChurches.” Sanctuary churches offer asafe haven for individualswho fear deportation. There are many factors involved in deciding hether a church willdeclare itself a Sanctuary Church. We would like to form an ad-hoc committee toexplorethose factors and produce information to present to the congregation. The congregationwould be asked to vote onany declaration of a sanctuary church. Ifyou are interestedin joining this committee, please email Steve Peck at [email protected].

'3 Centuries and Beyond' Did you know...... the mystery/history of our steeple and ‘Wind Vane’ isdifficult to find.

The best informationfound is as follows: When the buildingwas first on the presentlocation in 1737 there was no steeple, in 1806 a smalltower was erected, and in 1851 asmall spire was erected for the installationof a bell. In 1888 the building wasenlarged andimproved and the ‘weather vane’ was repaired and gilded. When had it been added to thespire? The 1938 hurricane tore the steeple from thechurch and the wind vane with it. InSeptember of 1939 the ‘wind-weather vane’ was repaired and put back inplace. InSeptember of 1983, the 1939wind vane was again back in place. Wheredid it go andwhat happened to it? Herewe are almost 25 years later and we are putting a replica of the 1939 windvane(which might also be a replica of the original one?) back in place. If anyone hasbetter knowledge would youplease come forward with the information and contact LizRosenholm at (401)245-9098 or [email protected]. Forevergrateful! The ‘Did you know…’ historical segments are brought to you by the ‘3Centuries andBeyond’ group.
