The Situation

The cooperative began updating its systems three years ago. The main goal

was to virtualize its infrastructure to the greatest degree possible. The next

steps included improving the backup and storage strategy.

“Our backup solution was outdated, it managed the virtual machines as if they

were physical ones, and it took forever to run the backup operations. There

wasn’t enough time to backup the systems that we wanted to every day. We

needed a solution that could deal with virtualized environments, reduce the

backup timeframes, minimize storage space as much as possible, and is easy to

implement and manage due to our limited human resources,” explains Vicente

Campayo, head of systems engineering at the Caja Rural Castilla-La Mancha.

Representatives from the cooperative attended an event

on Microsoft Hyper-V, the hypervisor running its virtual

infrastructure, where they learned about the existence

of Veeam® Backup & Replication™. The information

and demonstrations offered by the Veeam team and

COMPAREX, its technology partner, convinced the

group from the cooperative of this solution’s strengths

over the competition.

“Veeam, without a doubt, is the best solution available

on the market today to back up completely virtualized

environments. Because it is based on the hypervisor’s

backup APIs, there’s no need to use agents on the virtu-

al machines. Further, it makes it possible to integrate the

entire gamut of virtualization features. The project took

only one month to implement, thanks to our close co-

operation with the cooperative’s team,” points out Car-

los Cardeñoso, Senior Consultant at COMPAREX.

Project Description

Veeam Backup & Replication is integrated into a data cen-

ter on Windows Server 2012 R2, which runs eight hosts

and 70 virtual machines, providing support for critical

applications such as an intranet managed by Microsoft

SharePoint, email with Microsoft Exchange, file servers,

and the Microsoft Lync messaging platform. The storage

system features an HP 3PAR StoreServ 7400 array, with

an EMC CLARiiON CX3-20 storage unit and tapes for di-

saster recovery. These devices will be replaced by an HP

array of the same type in a second data center, which will

be set up soon and then connected using Veeam.

Implementing the Veeam solution has changed the dy-

namics of performing backups and the associated time-

frames entirely at the company, which has a total storage

capacity of 18 TB. Previously, the IT team was not capable

of performing a backup of all machines every day because

it would have taken too long. Now, the process takes one

hour only for an incremental backup, compared to ten

hours under the old setup. It used to take the entire week-

end for a weekly backup, which can now be performed in

90 minutes.

Saving Time and Increasing Efficiency

The cooperative has seen impressive results thanks to

the combination of advanced duplication and compres-

sion tools provided by Veeam Backup & Replication with

the deduplication of Windows Server 2012 R2 under

Microsoft Hyper-V: “We were able to back up things

90% faster than before, and we only need around half

of the storage space. For example, a 300 GB machine

could be shrunk to 130 GB. It went so fast when we

made a backup on the first day that I thought we had

done something wrong. I was genuinely impressed. Like-

wise, for Virtual Lab, the lab environment for checking

backups and recoveries in minutes,” emphasizes Vicente

Campayo.

Successful Recovery Tests

In this context, the head of systems engineering at the

Caja Rural Castilla-La Mancha holds the recovery tests

performed in the Virtual Lab environment by Veeam in

high regard. “We are able to set up a 300 GB machine

in 20 minutes. It used to take us six hours. Before you

would blindly perform the recovery and take the risk of

implementing it in live production. Now you run the tests

first and then load it.”

One of the other features that Vicente Campayo likes to

point out is the high granularity of Veeam’s file recovery

capability: “We can restore individual folders and emails

with Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange immedi-

ately and without mistakes. And until we can upgrade

Microsoft SharePoint to SharePoint 2013 and use Veeam

Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint, we are using the tool

U-Air® for recovering the Active Directory if something

happens to get deleted and are quite happy with it.”

You no longer need a special training course to learn how to operate

Veeam. The introductory presentation is all that is needed. The ease of

performing backups is complemented by granular browsing tools such as

U-Air and Veeam Explorer, with which you can instantly restore fi les from

a number of different systems.
