eShare builds upon a combination of the latest web technologies and the proven 3D visualization features of eBrowser, creating a unique platform that will open new pos-sibilities for engineering companies, EPCs, shipyards, O/Os and ship owners to manage and share their information.

The key features of the first release include:

■ Integration with systems such as ERP, PDM, materials management or mainte-nance to make information available to

everyone who needs it. View external in-formation in the form of attributes, hierar-chies and color codings. Easily configure integrations to Microsoft SQL Server, Ora-cle or any system accessible via standard data access interfaces (OLE DB, ODBC).

■ Access functionality and resources in web-based systems directly from the model by creating dynamic hyperlinks

■ Manage projects and users, control what individual users can see

■ Use many features familiar in eBrowser

■ Use models directly from Cadmatic and Nupas-Cadmatic or use the eXchanger product family to import models from other CAD systems

This is only a beginning and new features will become available throughout the year, so stay tuned for the next releases!

New Release Model

Cadmatic has taken a new quarterly re-lease model into use. The first release fol-lowing the new model was published in January 2014. The release name, or iden-tification, was 2014Q1.

As the title indicates, Cadmatic releases will be published four times a year, one in each quarter. Normally releases will be made avail-able via the customer area during the first month of each quarter, i.e. in January, April, July and October. If the need arises mainte-nance releases containing critical fixes can

also be released between these quarterly releases. The maintenance revisions of the quarterly releases are named by adding e.g. R2 or R3 to the end of the release name, e.g. 2014Q1R2.

Benefits for Cadmatic users

There are several benefits for Cadmatic user organizations. The organizations will learn that Cadmatic releases deliver new func-tionality 4 times a year. The traditional ap-

proach of releasing tends to lead to unre-liable slipping release schedules. The new release name helps in communication as the release name now directly indicates when the release was or will be made.

The high quality of releases can be main-tained. As the software is developed in four fixed time boxes and new functionality is released as soon it is mature; there are no longer major and minor releases. Natural-ly there will be differences in the amount of functionality visible for users between

New Release Model

releases, but the development effort for each release is equal. This approach not only mit-igates bug-related risks, but also improves quality via the feedback provided by users about these frequent releases.

Naturally the assumption is not that user or-ganizations will always take new releases into use. For all releases, however, there will at least be some organizations that will take them into use and provide valuable feed-back. This will eventually benefit all the user organizations.

Some of the most useful improvements are easy to implement, so-called low hanging fruits. Frequent releases provide a vehicle to make those improvements promptly avail-able for end users.

Lean and agile

This new release model is part of process changes that have seen the implementation of lean and agile values and principles in Cadmatic.

In early 2013 Cadmatic’s product devel-opment started applying the scrum agile methodology. A very important element of scrum is the organization of planning and development around short, in our case 2 week, time-boxed increments called sprints. Each sprint delivers a potentially shippa-ble product increment. The Sprints provide fast plan-do-learn cadence, i.e. a sustain-able regular iteration rhythm, for product development.

This new quarterly release model called Ag-ile Release Train provides slower, but quite frequent, time-boxed cadence for releasing. Agile Release Train is a well-known software industry term introduced by Dean Leffing-well in his book Scaling Software Agility.

It is based on set of common operating prin-ciples including:

■ Frequent, periodic planning and release dates for the products are fixed

■ Dates are fixed & quality is fixed scope is variable

■ Release Trains are executed as a series of Sprints

New Release Model

The train refers to a metaphor where the train departs from the station on a reliable schedule. The train’s cargo that is delivered can be seen as the functionalities that where ready in time to be available for the users in a software release. The train does not wait. Functionality that was not mature enough will wait for the next train, which will come quite soon.

Agile Release Train aligns different Scrum software development teams to a common mission, schedule, and cadence. It is a spi-nal cord of continuous software product de-

velopment flow. It also promotes internal company communication because the re-lease name directly indicates the timing of the release.

Agile enterprise

Agile Release Train provides Cadmatic level cadence and synchronization, not only for software development, but several other ac-tivities such as strategy follow-up and up-dates, product portfolio management, road mapping and marketing.

In every quarter, progress and what has changed in our understanding about cus-tomer needs is evaluated. Plans are not carved in stone. Cadmatic frequently up-dates different level plans to deliver the best possible value to the end users and their or-ganizations. The whole enterprise becomes agile and lean.

New Release Model

HighlightsCadmatic has taken a new quarterly re-lease model in use. Four releases are planned annually. The release name inidi-cates the year and the quarter when it is published, e.g. 2014Q1.

Version 2014Q1 of Cadmatic heralds a new generation of the software versions and in-cludes several major new functionalities. The first release of the eShare – information management solution for the whole plant and ship life cycle and hundreds of small im-provements to bring the usability and per-formance of the software to a higher level.

New structural units for faster modeling

Structural units have been developed for fast configurable unit-based modeling of steel constructions such as platforms, rail-ings, stairs, ladders etc. Since version 6.2 more units have been implemented – cir-cular platforms and caged ladders. The user just needs to select the unit type and indi-cate the location points in the 3D model, after which the steel construction is creat-ed according to the predefined dimensions and components. This functionality further improves the user-friendly and fast mod-eling tools and saves design time for our customers.

New structural units have been defined and can be customized with various set-tings:

■ Ladders

■ Vertical ladders

■ Caged ladders

■ Passages of structural units

■ FRP vertical ladders and caged ladders

■ Configurable safety cage

Advanced steel constructions are now possible with the bent beams functionality. This allows steel constructions to be made by selecting the material for the beam from the library and then making the geometry of the curved steel construction.

Advanced functionality for air ducts

Further development of air duct modeling leads to enhanced production and manu-facturing data in air duct spools. It is now possible to change the specification dur-ing duct routing and regenerate parts ac-cording to the ducting spec – as with pipe routing. Also for rectangular air ducts the user can define the insulation specification and see insulation in the 3D model to take advantage of space reservation and colli-sion detection. New additional materials can be defined for insulation pins for rectangu-lar ducts.

In duct spools branch parts are now shown when ducts spools are defined and anno-tations of branches are shown on the duct prefabrication drawing. To improve han-dling of production data the name of the main document group is now inheritable by members.

Enhanced space reservation in 3D model

Several functions have been implemented for better handling of space reservations – improvements for service spaces for equip-ment and for standard components of piping and ducting, insulation for air ducts, reserved space for cable ways and passag-es. Now the user can define service spaces for equipment and standard components al-ready while modeling in the library. Shared settings can be chosen for service space sys-tems for standard components, ducts and cable trays. This significantly improves the accuracy of the model and ensures error free installation.

Piping and 3D model

The most efficient piping design and 3D mod-eling on the market are features that have been associated with Cadmatic and Nupas-Cadmatic for many years. The development team has come up with several new features to further boost software performance and user friendliness in these areas including:

■ A rotation tool for standard components

■ Several new piping support templates and new duct supports

■ Collision detection for service spaces, passages and reserved spaces

Isometric drawings and spools

New visual control of the 3D model piping geometry status in isometric. The compari-son mechanism checks updates for piping isometrics and visualizes the differences in a 3D view and in eBrowser.

■ Adjustable zoom step factor to ensure the best visualization during work with isometrics

■ Containment hierarchy (blocks and named spaces) can be used in isometric drawing production

■ PCF file format export is now supported
