Easter Reflection

Dear Parents and Carers

The upcoming ethos themes for us all to reflect on and discuss are

Easter16 This is how we know what love is Jesus Christ laid down his lifefor us And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers andsisters 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother orsister in need but has no pity on them how can the love of God be inthat person (1 John 316shy17)

Key Question How did Jesusrsquo death and resurrection change the world

Our FaithNow faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance aboutwhat we do not see (Jeremiah 1012)

Key Question How can our faith be strengthened or challenged

Year 8 Psychology Taster lessons

Students really enjoyed finding out about what to expect from Psychologyat GCSE Being a new subject there are many misconceptions about whatthe subject involves and it was lovely seeing students gain awareness ofthe wide area that psychology covers They all took part in an experimenton conformity and they all enjoyed talking about areas of clinicalpsychology and actually saw first hand how the process of labelling canimpact on people negatively Students were intrigued to hear about theoverlap that psychology has with the more traditional sciences I feel it willbe a popular option in year 9

Teachersrsquo efforts lead to studentsrsquo success

This year our school musical chosen by the most amount of votes wasCalamity Jane Irsquod never heard of the play before but I knew that I wantedto audition as every year is better than the one before As the auditionprocess came to and end the atmosphere in the studio was tense as theresults were revealed but everyone got a perfectly suited role and our 5month journey of Calamity Jane began

Our whole cast rehearsals took place every Thursday and every memberof the cast took it to their own responsibility and made sure they attendedevery rehearsal Some rehearsals were intense and hard to get throughbut without them the play wouldnrsquot have been as successful as it was Allthe cast members from all years made great friends from spending somuch time together and some true friendship bonds were formed as bothstudents and teachers spent quality time together Teachers were literallythe most patient people in the world trying to give us precise notes anduseful tips for performing and shining through our characters At the start

useful tips for performing and shining through our characters At the startof the play we had nothing but a stage but as the time progressed MissTomlinson along with Titus and the stage managers went on to ahuge props warehouse to rent us the best decorations to sugar coat thewhole play

In conclusion what was seen on stage had a HUGE amount of time andeffort gone into backstage and Irsquom sure that I can safely say on the behalfof everyone in the cast and the audience that without the help ofthe teachers at the Arts Department we would not have had a show asbrilliant as Calamity Jane was Thank you so much to Miss Tomlinson MrRedfearn Mr Hill and Miss Hetherington for all of your effortevery rehearsal on the countdown to Calamity

Elif (Year 10)

lots of fun in the rehearsals and even more excitement on the night ndash anamazing experience

My favourite part of the event was that it was enjoyable andcollaborative Overall it was great taking part in a special event and I canrsquotwait for next yearrsquos one

Zoi (Year 7)

Being Calamity

My decision to take part in the academy musical this year was influencedby multiple factors but determination to step out of my comfort zone is theone I would pick out as the most important Extrashycurricular activities suchas a school drama production require effort hard work and willingness totake risks Although having very little experience in theatre lowered myconfidence at first the minute I walked into that audition I knew that Iwould benefit and learn so much from taking part in this musical Thewarm welcome and enthusiasm I received from the teachers my peersand the drama department as a whole gave me the boost that I needed toclimb out of my bubble of insecurities and explore my abilities to their

fullest Mostly I loved working on this production because I trulyunderstood what it is like to be a part of a hardworkingdedicated community As an external student who came to ChelseaAcademy in September 2015 I can confidently say that I no longer have toworry about being an outsider The cast of Calamity Jane was composedof students from Year 7 to Year 13 working together as a team with eachindividual developing their talents and improving further with eachrehearsal

If yoursquore a parent reading this you might be thinking your child can notpossibly have time to be lsquomessing aboutrsquo in a school play when they aretoo busy with their coursework IL and GCSE preparation Well that iswhere you are wrong I am a Year 12 student with one hectic revisionschedule for my AS examinations starting in less than two months and Iplayed the main role in a 2 hour long musical for 3 nights in arow Imagine the amount of lines songs dance moves I had to rememberPicture the days I had to stay for extra hours after a long school day forrehearsal And now look at the sensational outcome Calamity Jane was areal success and I can honestly say that all of our hard work definitelypaid off As you can see it is not impossible to find a balance between ourstudies and hobbies I am saying this especially for the aspiring studentswho are aiming for success but are doubting their ability to manage somuch at once To anyone who has even a slight interest in musicaltheatre who wants to develop their actingsingingdancing skills whilehaving a blast with their schoolmates I would definitely recommend takingpart in the school musical next year Itrsquoll be an experience yoursquoll neverforget with memories to cherish forever

Salome (Year 12)

Calamity Jane on the Deadwood Stage

Calamity Jane is a complex musical and much more demanding on thevoice compared to almost any of the Academy productions that we havestaged since opening in 2009 In the main singing roles Titus (Y10)Felisha (Y9) Nadja (Y10) Blerim (Y10) and Fis (Y10) did a fantastic jobevery night receiving cheers from the audiences Special praise must goto Salome (Y12) in the title role who with 4 times more songs thananyone in the cast performed with energy enthusiasm and characterthroughout the whole rehearsal process and consistently across allperformances with a huge number of lyrics to learn Last but by nomeans least ndash the chorus Not as many songs as in previous years butreally tricky ones with lots of repeated sections all with slightly differentlyrics Well done

I must of course mention the fabulous band who provided such stunningaccompaniment and support to the singers on stage ndash we were very luckyto have an almost full complement of violins viola cello piano guitartrumpet clarinet saxophone bassoon and percussion to really producean authentic soundhellipsome professional productions donrsquot even have thatmany

As Faculty Leader for the Arts the production is always a very special (ifvery tiring) time of year and I would like to express my immense pride andthanks to all who took part the cast backstage crew parents and staffwho supported the performances and of course the fabulous Arts Facultystaff whose dedication and truly collaborative approach made theproduction the success that it was

There were several events that took place including a lsquoPrimary Sciencersquoevent where our own students did simple science demonstrations forvisiting primary schools students from Ashburnham and St Maryrsquos RCSchool a careers fair at lunch time where visiting engineers and scientistsfrom a range of backgrounds spoke to our students about scienceshyrelatedcareers and several special activities in science lessons where studentshad to use basic engineering principles to solve a problem

Year 7 Space Mission

This week Year 7 students have taken part in lessons to help them thinkabout what it would be like to live in space and the challenges they wouldhave to overcome This included modelling the difficulty of wearing spacesuits gloves to carry out fiddly tasks like tying shoelaces and looking atwhat happens to marshmallows in a vacuum to understand why a spacesuit is pressurised We have also been Tweeting messages to Britishastronaut Tim Peake

Year 8 CREST Awards

During Science Week every Year 8 worked in a team on a lsquoChelseaCommunity Gardenrsquo project In their teams each member had beentrained in a different specialism and they had to combine their skills andknowledge to design a workable community garden that could be built inthe local area As a result of their hard work many of the students qualifyfor a lsquoCREST Discovery Awardrsquo a nationally recognised qualification fromthe British Science Association

Shark Dissection

Students loved finding out all about sharks and how they are exquisitelyadapted to survive within their ecological niche During the dissection thestudents were able to examine the cartilaginous skeleton as well as beingable to find out what the shark ate for its last meal

INSPIRE talks

As part of our links with imperial College we regularly have visitingscientists to run lsquoINSPIRE Workshopsrsquo relating to their research for ourstudents This week we had sessions on lsquosuperhydrophobic surfacesrsquo

(materials that repel water) and how they could be used and anothersession about the process involved in creating new medicines and howthey end up on pharmacy shelves As always our students really madethe most of these fantastic opportunities and were superb ambassadorsfor our Academy

Dr Susannah Maidment lecture

To start Science Week Chelsea Academy we were delighted towelcome Dr Susannah Maidment from Imperial College to talk to our 6thform students in the Monday morning lecture on 7th March Dr Maidmenttalked about her work with dinosaurs and specifically Sophie theStegosaurus who is housed at the Natural History Museum Sophie is themost complete example of a stegosaurus and we were able to find out

about computing modelling and engineering techniques used to learnmore about how stegosaurus behaved what they ate and what thoseplates are for

House Assembly ndash Gravitational Waves

About a month ago there were a lot of articles about the discovery ofgravity waves If you were not sure about General Relativity and whatgravity waves are then ask a Chelsea Academy student In HouseAssembly this week coaching groups explained how gravity works using atrampoline a student and a netball The maths is very complicated but theconcepts are surprisingly simple Successfully detecting gravity wavesfrom two black holes colliding 15 billion years ago is one of the mostimportant scientific breakthroughs of this century

Confidence boosting experience

I recently took part in the school production Calamity Jane this gave melots of support and confidence as a new member of the academy We hadlots of fun in the rehearsals and even more excitement on the night ndash an

lots of fun in the rehearsals and even more excitement on the night ndash anamazing experience

As Faculty Leader for the Arts the production is always a very special (ifvery tiring) time of year and I would like to express my immense pride andthanks to all who took part the cast backstage crew parents and staffwho supported the performances and of course the fabulous Arts Facultystaff whose dedication and truly collaborative approach made theproduction the success that it was

fullest Mostly I loved working on this production because I trulyunderstood what it is like to be a part of a hardworkingdedicated community As an external student who came to ChelseaAcademy in September 2015 I can confidently say that I no longer have toworry about being an outsider The cast of Calamity Jane was composedof students from Year 7 to Year 13 working together as a team with eachindividual developing their talents and improving further with eachrehearsal

As Faculty Leader for the Arts the production is always a very special (ifvery tiring) time of year and I would like to express my immense pride andthanks to all who took part the cast backstage crew parents and staffwho supported the performances and of course the fabulous Arts Facultystaff whose dedication and truly collaborative approach made theproduction the success that it was

useful tips for performing and shining through our characters At the startof the play we had nothing but a stage but as the time progressed MissTomlinson along with Titus and the stage managers went on to ahuge props warehouse to rent us the best decorations to sugar coat thewhole play
