FINDING THE TALENT

Sourcing talented university graduates

Recent graduates

FDM’s dedicated Recruitment Team visits over 170 universities throughout North America and Europe every year. We host technical and soft skills seminars, presentations, hackathons and résumé workshops throughout the academic year in order to identify the best talent prior to graduation. A snapshot of universities we recruit from includes:

Program Referrals

In addition to recruiting through university career fairs and events, we also find many of our talented candidates via referrals from within our own program. A high proportion of the individuals who successfully pass our assessment evaluation and receive an invite to join the FDM Careers Program come to us as direct referrals. This is truly a testament to the success of our unique model, as our top performing trainees and Consultants are eager to share their positive experiences and the career opportunities that FDM has to offer with their peers.

I was initially nervous about taking on a junior consultant who didn’t have years of experience in the music business and in IT, but working with Kris has totally changed my mind. His work has exceeded my expectations and he has played a crucial part in the success of a high profile, complex project. Sr. Business Analyst, Warner Music

THE FDM MODEL

Bridging the skills gap

The two-year FDM Careers Program is designed to equip individuals with technical expertise and commercial experience enabling fast-track career progression into the IT industry. The roadmap below is an illustration of the journey that our Consultants undertake. Once they complete the program, the sky is the limit.

Recent graduates and military veterans who join the FDM Careers Program in any of our North American locations become employed by FDM from day one of their training. As this award-winning training is fully funded by FDM, our trainees commit to work for FDM for a period of two years following their training completion. This commitment not only allows FDM to provide guaranteed continuity of service to clients, but also the ability to scale at speed. Once the twenty-four month bond is complete, FDM Consultants can transition permanently onto client sites free of charge or can remain with FDM as Senior Consultants.

The training takes place at our award-winning Academies in Toronto, New York, London, Leeds, Glasgow, Frankfurt and Hong Kong. FDM has also setup “pop up” Academies for driven client programs in locations near the client site.

Successful candidates undergo rigorous reference and disclosure checks. This includes and is not limited to criminal checks as well as document verification.

A large financial services organization was seeking to increase its graduate pool in order to build a more sustainable talent pipeline for the future. The challenge was three fold: a lack of relevant skills (specifically DevOps, Cyber Security and Test-driven Development) present within university curricula; a sizable skills gap in the market; and the competition posed by other financial services organizations targeting similar skills and talent.

FDM collaborated with management within the client company to create a customized training curriculum to suit their needs, particularly in the areas of Cyber Security and DevOps. FDM recruited, trained and deployed 80+ FDM Consultants onto the client sites across several departments in operations and technology. These FDM Consultants were trained locally near the client site, and their performance throughout training was regularly assessed by FDM and the client alike.

Our client now benefits from a sustainable pool of talent, equipped with specialized skills tailored to the client’s work environment and needs. FDM Consultants have automated a number of time consuming manual processes, making their operations more efficient, and the feedback received has been outstanding. The client is now saving in excess of $6M annually by working with FDM as opposed to relying on other high-cost contractor resources in the market.

A track record of successFDM Consultants are deployed across a vast range of roles, bridging skill gaps within existing teams, assisting new enterprises in getting off the ground, supporting growth areas and helping to deliver new services.

UBS

The Challenge: Due to large cost savings initiatives across the bank in Group Technology, UBS was seeking to fill technical roles with a cost-effective approach by developing a Business Solutions Centre in Nashville, TN. This centre required a range of technical skillsets, including a Service Delivery team to provide server-provisioning support primarily across the EMEA (UK) region.

The Solution: FDM collaborated with regional managers at UBS in order to find quality resources for placement in Nashville. FDM recruited, trained, and relocated a team of Consultants to this Business Solutions Centre, where they were placed within a number of specialty teams throughout Group Technology. A team of 6 FDM Consultants was selected specifically to work within the Service Delivery Team. This group has worked overseeing the engagement of global UBS teams to resolve technical issues within tight delivery timelines, including server moves and decommissions. These Consultants view projects with a critical eye for detail as well as a deep understanding of the larger impact to the client, constantly seeking to improve streamlined workflow and reporting accuracy for the Service Transition and Global Delivery teams.

The Outcome: UBS now has 15+ FDM Consultants working at the Nashville Business Solutions Centre across multiple technology areas. The feedback provided by UBS managers has been outstanding, in particular for the Service Delivery team. Prior to their onboarding, the UBS Service Delivery – UK Service Transition team consisted of 40 people performing a primarily task-based role that became backlogged with errors, workflow bottlenecks, and redundancies. Once the team of 6 FDM Consultants was onboarded, the role evolved and the focus increasingly became project-based. With this team responsible for managing the end-to-end process, the business was able to drastically reduce headcount, develop a highly efficient workflow, and realign the global delivery teams to better handle production demand. As a result of these Consultants’ work in Nashville, FDM has provided an effective near shore cost savings solution, and based on manager feedback it is likely that the majority of these FDM Consultants will be taken on full time by UBS once their bonded period is complete.

HSBC

The Challenge: Following the financial crisis of 2008, the entire financial services industry was subject to a number of enforced financial banking regulations. These acts included the Dodd-Frank Act, Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA), and Know Your Client (KYC). As a result, HSBC faced the challenge of assembling a team in a short amount of time with the appropriate banking knowledge and technical skillsets; the team needed to scale very promptly to a size of 20.

The Solution: FDM collaborated with the newly appointed hiring managers at HSBC in order to align the FDM Data and Operations course as closely as possible to the desired skillsets for the client’s team, incorporating modules covering Excel, ITIL, professional skills, finance, and business analysis. FDM sourced and trained suitable candidates, and the team was on boarded in 3 phases over the course 7 months. This approach allowed for knowledge transfer and delegation of time from the HSBC line managers to train new consultants.

The Outcome: There are now 130+ FDM Consultants placed with HSBC across the US, UK, Canada, and Hong Kong. With more than 20 in the US, the Consultants working on this new team are utilizing specific knowledge sets on regulations and acts that affect the bank on a daily basis. FDM Consultants are responsible for working closely with HSBC’s internal audit team as well as an external regulator to ensure the bank is fully compliant and up to date on regulations. As a result, the entirety of HSBC’s client base has been refactored and cleansed of mistakes or missing entries, making the data much more accurate – a necessary action in today’s compliant banking environment. HSBC is very pleased with the progress of all FDM Consultants.

Sirius XM Radio

The Challenge: At the time Sirius XM Radio did not have a strong graduate recruiting process in place and were largely reliant on high rate contractors. This made it difficult to ensure that knowledge was retained internally. With no structured college graduate program, Sirius also found that it was a challenge to build the technology work force from the ground up.

The Solution: Sirius XM Radio utilized FDM’s program to obtain qualified graduate level resources, which they can mold and retain on flexible terms for two years. FDM supplied a team of locally recruited graduates trained through FDM’s Academy in Software Development, with skill sets including JAVA, .NET, SQL script analysis, UNIX Commands, Frameworks, MS Excel, Access and Word.

The Outcome: The engagement developed was a two year commitment between Sirius XM Radio and the FDM Group. Upon completion of year 1, FDM team members transitioned to working on Supply Chain Development and User Web Interface Development. They have been so successful and added enough value that a number of them will convert to full time employees once their two years are complete.
