a Message froM The coachANDy FrIeND

We are fortunate to host a suite of seven high quality home matches, including fixtures against two of 2010’s finalists, the Hurricanes and Chiefs. These home matches are the foundation to a successful season and we simply cannot achieve these results without your support.

There’s no question we have a squad capable of contesting the Investec Super 14 finals in 2010. We have retained the vast majority of our squad from 2009, who will continue to play to our strengths and put into practice the entertaining brand of ‘Brumbies rugby’.

Coupled with this is our strong recruitment: Rocky Elsom is regarded as one of the world’s best back rowers, Josh Valentine has added to his Wallaby caps after a strong year for the Force in 2009 and you do not want to miss the roar of the crowd when Matt Giteau returns to Canberra Stadium in CA Brumbies colours for the first time.

Having been part of CA Brumbies wins at Canberra Stadium, it’s no wonder the players love playing there so much. From the reception they receive when they run onto the field, to the cheer when points are scored to the assistance our knowledgeable crowd gives to the referee – it’s an electric atmosphere like no other, generated by thousands of passionate CA Brumbies members and corporate partners.

As key members of the CA Brumbies family you play an integral role in the team. The support and interest we receive from our corporate partners continues our pursuit of sustainable success and it is the support we receive from you at every level that sets us apart from other provinces in the competition.

I am determined that every time our corporate partners come to watch us play in 2010, you will be proud of the spirit that our players display and enthralled by what happens on the field!

Stand as one with us in 2010 – as valued corporate members of the CA Brumbies family, we will not let you down!

Andy Friend.

Week 4 v Lions – Expect a packed house at Canberra Stadium when the CA Brumbies welcome back flyhalf Matt Giteau against the Lions. The Johannesburg side took the points, 25–17, in the two side’s last encounter which ultimately cost the CA Brumbies a finals berth in 2009. Only a full-time Christian Lealiifano try could separate the two sides (28–21) when they last met at Canberra Stadium. The Lions have never won in Canberra and the CA Brumbies will be determined to keep that record intact as they kick off their first home match of the 2010 season.

Week 5 v Sharks – The Sharks are circling and this is not a game to be missed. The Natal side has been amongst the competition’s top contenders for the past three seasons and will again help fly the South African flag in 2010. The past two fixtures between the two sides at Canberra Stadium have been classic matches, with the CA Brumbies returning from 15-point (2006) and 11-point (2008) deficits to win 35–30 and 27–21 respectively. The Sharks are one of the powerhouses in South African rugby and feature a number of leading Test players including Springbok captain John Smit.

Week 7 v Chiefs – If you like long range tries and blistering pace, the Chiefs are the team for you. Last year’s runners-up have the potential to post runaway scorelines courtesy of their express-paced backline featuring All Blacks Sitiveni Sivivatu, Mils Muliaina and Lelia Masaga. The 2009 clash between the sides produced an epic battle with the CA Brumbies needing to beat the second placed Chiefs in Waikato to ensure a semi-final berth. Starved of possession, the ACT side repelled a constant wave of second half Chiefs attack, eventually succumbing 10–7.

Week 9 v Cheetahs – Hailing from one of South African rugby’s most talent rich regions, the Cheetahs will be chasing an improved result to their last place finish in 2009. Boasting a talented young squad, the Cheetahs pushed the CA Brumbies to 29–23 when the two sides last met at Canberra Stadium in 2008. Despite their lowly 2009 ranking, the Cheetahs will continue to build on their strong finish to the season where they claimed the scalps of the Crusaders and Sharks, as well as getting within nine points of the Bulls, Stormers and Waratahs.

Week 10 v Hurricanes – Batten down the hatches, the Hurricanes are coming to town. The Wellington side is arguably the most dangerous broken field team in the Investec Super 14 and was the highest scoring side during 2009, averaging almost 30 points per match. The ‘Canes boasted the competition’s highest try scorer, Ma’a Nonu, unquestionably the most feared dreadlocks in Super Rugby. Having qualified for their fourth finals series in five years last year and still left with a bare trophy cabinet, the Hurricanes will be determined to go one better than their runners-up finish in 2006.

Week 12 v Reds – The Reds head south chasing their first Investec Super 14 win in Canberra. Victories over the CA Brumbies have been few and far between for the Queenslanders, who have only tasted success over the ACT side once in 1999. But in an Australian derby nothing can be taken for granted and it will be no quarter asked nor given. Former CA Brumbies Saia and Anthony Faingaa, and Jack Kennedy will make their first appearance in opposition colours at Canberra Stadium while former Canberra Raiders utility Mark McLinden will make his first professional rugby appearance in the ACT.

Week 13 v Highlanders – The CA Brumbies and Highlanders re-ignite their fierce rivalry in the final regular season match at Canberra Stadium. Last year’s season opener in Dunedin was a heart-stopper, with a last-minute Christian Lealiifano drop goal giving the CA Brumbies a 33–31 victory. This result followed the trend of recent CA Brumbies/Highlanders matches with four of their last five fixtures separated by two points or less. The two sides have traded blow for blow during the Investec Super 14 with the Highlanders still holding a 7–6 advantage, due to their previously impervious winning record at ‘the House of Pain’. Be there to see the CA Brumbies square the ledger.
