PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
2015 was a remarkable and milestone year for CFA Society Vancouver as we celebrated our
50th Anniversary!
In November, the Society was front and centre in Vancouver’s financial community as we hosted our
largest event, our 50th Anniversary Celebration. The evening showcased keynote speaker Michael
Lewis, author of several Academy Award-nominated movies such as The Big Short, Moneyball and
The Blind Side. We welcomed several CFA Institute leaders, including our emcee Beth Hamilton-Keen,
chair of the Board of Governors. Our event committee did a phenomenal job creating a retrospective
video of the past 50 years of our Society as well as hosting an engaging panel of past presidents,
dating back to our inaugural year, 1965.
A big focus for our Board in 2015 was the value of our membership. Several new initiatives were
developed, including exclusive member only events, complimentary programs and new social
and networking receptions. During the year we welcomed Suzanne Martin as our new full-time
Membership and Programs Co-ordinator. Suzanne brings a wealth of experience delivering
member value to organizations and with her infectious enthusiasm we look forward to continued
enhancement of our membership benefits.
From a governance perspective, CFA Society Vancouver is stronger than ever. Our leadership is
full of committed and talented volunteers and the success of our society is a result of their hard
work and dedication. Our organizational structure is deep and continues to evolve. The promotion
of Virginia Coles to Executive Director is a milestone for our Society as we recognize the exemplary
contribution she has made over the years.
As we look to the upcoming year, we are excited to build upon the strong organizational and
financial position of CFA Society Vancouver. With an emphasis on employer engagement, establishing
a new mentorship program and enhancing our leadership and volunteers, CFA Society Vancouver
will continue to lead the investment profession by promoting high ethical behaviour and
professional excellence.
For all those who help to make our Society the success it is and the success it will continue to be,
thank you.

CF
A SOCIETY VANCOUVER
1965 2015
Thank you to the 940 guests who joined us in celebrating
our 50th Anniversary. The feedback was tremendous with
everyone enjoying the event from the venue and meal to the
presentations and after party. We filled Mahony & Sons to the
rafters with over 200 guests continuing the
celebration until midnight. The conversation with
Michael Lewis and Paul Balfour was informative
and entertaining, and our past presidents panel
shared stories from the last 50 years.
Dr. Heather Mohan of Camp Kerry extends
her gratitude to the generous members and
guests who helped raise over $11,000 for her
organization’s initiatives. Well done, everyone!
Thank you to all of the sponsors who supported
the event and without whose support, we could
not put on an event of this calibre. Thank you to
Thomson Reuters, PenderFund, Horizons ETFs,
Raymond James, KPMG, UBC Sauder School of Business, Borden
Ladner Gervais, and Business in Vancouver. We also thank CFA
Institute for providing additional funding and for joining us at
the event.
As a Society run by volunteers, we value
the help we receive from our committee
volunteers. This includes Duane Tup
Chong, David Smith, Maria Pacella, Michael
Wallberg, Jessie Bobinski, Paul Martin and
the volunteers who helped out on the
day - Simon Tso, Ethan Dang, Ken Wu, John
O’Donoghue, Sam Ghassen, Michael Sawer,
Suzanne Martin, Samantha Falk, and Leanne

The Employer Outreach Committee was created to establish, develop, and enhance CFA Society Vancouver’s relationships with local employers. The committee works with the Local Society and the CFA Institute to increase the awareness of both organizations and the CFA designation as a whole.
The committee met with selective employers across all sectors and sizes to understand their needs and perspectives. The results of the meetings supported the need for the committee and helped form the basis of the committee’s strategy going forward. The committee recognized the desire to improve communications and activities as they relate to improving the valuation proposition of the local employers not only locally, but on a global scale through the relationship with the CFA Institute.
CFA Society Vancouver supports local employers with:
• Professional Development • In-House Presentations
• Job Postings • Ethics Training
• Internship Recommendations • Claritas Program (for back office employees)
WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE A CFA CHARTERHOLDER
Well regarded Canadian employers seek out fi nance professionals who have earned the CFA designation.
Improve your competitive advantage by tapping into this rich talent pool.
The mission of CFA Institute is to lead the investment profession globally by setting the highest standards of
ethics, education, and professional excellence.
The CFA Societies of Canada support this mission and offer various services to their members such as continuing education
and career development.
In 1990 I was given the challenge of growing an independent asset management organization for the Ontario Teachers’ Fund. As a CFA charterholder myself I was familiar with the skill sets developed by the CFA education program. A CFA charterholder receives a well rounded education in all the essential elements needed for portfolio management and security analysis. Of equal or even greater importance was the CFA emphasis on integrity and standards of conduct. From my perspective all the bases were covered and I decided to rely heavily on the CFA program.
From that time Teachers’ has continually encouraged its’ employees to enroll in the CFA program and achieve their charter status. The contribution made by charterholders has been a signifi cant part of Teachers’ success.
