Analogy of Surveillance cameras automatic detection of moving objects
• Goal detecting moving objects from a sequence of a fixed camera • Background: static scene • Foreground: moving object • Approach: detect the moving objects as the difference between the
image of the current image and the background image
• Automatic surveillance is virtually impossible using optical imagery from space because of changes in geometry, lighting conditions, clouds.
• Automatic surveillance using Radar is feasible because of reliable and exactly repeated geometry…. But requires wall-to-wall repeat coverage at sufficient resolution….

Use of SAR for Land based Change detection, requirements
• Use of sufficient resolution (5 m or better) • Use of sufficient swath width to cover very large
areas repeatedly • Use of same (or almost same) geometry = stacks • Use of imagery of difference as opposed to individual
images • Reduction of speckle noise level by temporal and
spatial filtering.

• A Stack is a set of images taken at the same orbit having identical:
• Beam mode and resolution • Observation geometry • SAR illumination source
• Stack-based approach allows: • Filtering of speckle noise from
individual acquisitions • Weather and day-light independence • Spectacular improvements in
precision, reliability, and efficiency

Strength of Radar monitoring
• Reliable acquisitions • Compared to optical imagery the change detection is more efficient and
effective for large areas. • If the area of interest is monitored systematically (in stacks) the
following advantages apply: • More accurate detection of subtle changes. • Reduction of false alarms due to construction and other systematic
changes. • Reduction of false alarms due to random activity (e.g. industrial
activity, water levels, cars etc.) • The following 2 examples are based on single pairs of data (one scene
before and one scene after the event).
