As one of the world’s great ancient capitals, Beijing is a must-see because it is home to some of the

finest remnants of China’s imperial past. Standing side-by-side with old Beijing’s crimson palace

complexes are the city’s impressive skylines. Beijing’s travel industry forged forward after China’s

economic reforms in 1978, and the city is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

We look forward to seeing you in Beijing.

Ming Tombs

Badaling Great Wall

Temple of Heaven

The Great Wall is a must for a

China tour, while Badaling is

a must for a Great Wall tour.

Badaling Great Wall in Beijing is

the best-preserved and most

complete section among the

various sections, hence the most

popular, even among world

leaders. You should visit it at

least once in your life.

The Ming Tombs represent the imperial cemetery region

where the 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty were buried.

In a carefully selected site, according to the Chinese feng-

shui traditions, the tombs are surrounded by mountains

on three sides and a river flows near them. The tomb area

has been listed by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage.

The site offers insight into imperial Ming Dynasty life,

including stone thrones, huge human and animal sculptures,

and other evidence of Chinese culture and traditions.

The Temple of Heaven is located in the Chongwen

District, Beijing. Originally, this was the place where

emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and Qing

Dynasty (1644 - 1911) held the Heaven Worship Ceremony.

It is the largest and most representative existing

masterpiece among China’s ancient sacrificial buildings.

Its grand architectural style and profound cultural

connotation give an insight into the practices of the

ancient Eastern civilization.

Forbidden City

Situated in the Haidian District northwest of Beijing,

Summer Palace is 15 kilometres from the downtown

area and it is the largest and most well-preserved royal

park in China. It greatly influences Chinese horticulture

and landscape with its famous natural views and cultural

interests, and also has long been recognized as ‘The

Museum of Royal Gardens’.

Tiananmen Square

SIGHTSEEING OPTIONS

Bird’s Nest (Beijing National Stadium)Summer Palace

The Chinese National Stadium was the 2008 Olympic

Games’ most striking structure, recognised all over the

world. The building’s dynamic form and vast scale creates

a new icon for China and the city of Beijing. The structural

form of the stadium is popularly described as a ‘bird’s

nest’, with its pattern inspired by Chinese-style ‘crazed

pottery’. Seemingly random, the pattern abides by

complex rules for which advanced geometry was defined.

Forbidden City, also known as the Palace Museum, lies at

the city centre of Beijing and once served as the imperial

palace for 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing

Dynasties (1368 - 1911). Ancient Chinese Astronomers

believed that the Purple Star (Polaris) was in the centre

of heaven and the Heavenly Emperor lived in the Purple

Palace. The Palace for the emperor on earth was the

so called Purple City. It was forbidden to enter without

special permission from the emperor. Hence its name

‘The Purple Forbidden City’, usually ‘The Forbidden City’.

Tiananmen Square is a large city square in the centre

of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen (“Gate of

Heavenly Peace”) located to its North, separating it from

the Forbidden City. The square contains the Monument

to the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the

National Museum of China, and the Mausoleum of Mao

Zedong. Tiananmen Square is within the top ten largest

city squares in the world. It has great cultural significance

as it was the site of several important events in Chinese

history.
