Overcoming Sin Part Two

St. Francis de Sales’ most notable work is Introduction to the Devout Life — a guide to holiness written for lay people in 1609. Ralph Martin’s book, Fulfillment of A ll Desire, gives excerpts from Francis and other Saints to inspire us to grow in the Spiritual life. For the next several weeks, this bulletin letter will feature a series about “Overcoming Sin” from Fulfillment of A ll Desire.

The First Purgation: Mortal Sin

Obviously, turning away from serious sin is one of the first things that needs to happen in true conversion. As Francis writes: What is your state of soul with respect to mortal sin? Are you firmly resolved never to commit it for any reason whatsoever? …In this resolution consists the foundation of the spiritual life. Francis recommends that a person in such a situation—coming back to the Lord from a life that included serious sin—consider the possibility of making a “general confession.” This entails making an appointment with a trusted confessor and going over one's whole life as a way of making a fresh start. Francis acknowledges that this is not absolutely necessary, but he strongly advises it.

He also points out how important the regular practice of the sacrament of Reconciliation can be in making a real change in our lives. He points out, though, that for the sacrament to be really efficacious it is important that we prepare for going to confession and be sincere and serious about wanting to turn away from sin. Often they make little or even no preparation and do not have sufficient contrition. Too often it happens that they go to confession with a tacit intention of returning to sin, since they are unwilling to avoid its occasions or use the means necessary for amendment of life.

Francis recommends weekly confession, although other spiritual writers recommend other frequencies, such as monthly. Even when we don't have mortal sins to confess, Francis points out the advantage of confessing venial sins, even though we don't have an obligation to do so, as it brings them into focus so we can work on them more intently, as well as benefiting from the grace given in the sacrament. Francis emphasizes that we really need to be sorry for our sins in order to make their reappearance less likely.

Many who confess their venial sins out of custom and concern for order but without thought of amendment remain burdened with them for their whole life and thus lose many spiritual benefits and advantages… It is an abuse to confess any kind of sin, whether mortal or venial, without a will to be rid of it since confession was instituted for no other purpose.

He also recommends that we be as specific as possible in our confession and not just confess generalities. For example, he encourages us not to confess in such general terms such as we didn't love God or our neighbor enough, or pray devoutly enough, since “Every saint in heaven and every man on earth might say the same thing if they went to confession.”

PARISH PICNIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Corpus Christi is holding its Parish Picnic on Sunday, Feb. 12th from 11:30 am to 5:00 pm at Desert Breeze Park, in Chandler, just south of Ray Road on Desert Breeze Boulevard. The Knights have been requested to handle the purchase and grilling of hot dogs, brats, and burgers. We will need help with the grilling and related duties. Knights and their families, as well as teens who need service hours, may contact Deputy Grand Knight Bob LaCroix at 602-695-0107 or [email protected] to sign up for time slots.

LEADERSHIP/PLANNING MEETING IS FEB 16th

K of C Council 10062 will meet for strategic planning of upcoming activities and projects Thurs, Feb 16 at 7:00 pm. It is at these monthly meetings that officers, chairmen, and volunteers decide important issues like details and costs, requests for financial support and other matters that would be time-consuming at the regular business meetings. All Knights of Council 10062 are encouraged to participate in these monthly meetings, usually conducted on the third Thursday of the month.

SECOND & THIRD DEGREES COMING TO CORPUS CHRISTI All First Degree Knights are invited, encouraged and welcomed to receive the Honors of the Second and Third Degrees in ceremonials Saturday, February 18th at Corpus Christi Parish Center. This is an outstanding opportunity for First Degree Knights to advance toward full knighthood as well as being eligible to serve as an officer in the Council. (Officers are required by the Supreme Council to be a Third Degree Knight.) As the host Council, all fees and lunch will be provided free to members of Council 10062. Registration begins at 8:00 am; the ceremonials will conclude by approximately 2:30 pm.

THE NEED FOR THE NEW EVANGELIZATION • Some have “lost a living sense of the faith. In

Canada and the USA, less than 1 in 4 Catholics go to Mass every Sunday.

• Some “no longer consider themselves to be members of the Church.” Many families have people who no longer practice the faith. The Catholic faith has not been passed from generation to generation.

• Some “live a life far removed from Christ and His Gospel.” Many people claim the title of Catholic, but do not live out their faith in any way that reflects that they are Catholic.

• There is a great need for many baptized Catholics to be “re-evangelized” - maybe evangelized for the first time.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 5, 2017

St. Vincent de Paul Corpus Christi Conference

In the Gospel today, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world.” He is calling us to live our Chris an

voca on in words and deeds.

Dear Corpus Christi Parishioners, Family and Friends:

Your continued support has made you the light to those living in a world of darkness and in need right here in our own community. You have allowed our members to do home visits to those seeking assistance and to help them determine the best way SVdP can help them to help themselves during hard times. Whether we help feed, clothe, house, or heal, we know, and our recipients know, that we could not do this without your help. Heartfelt thank you notes are many times received from the recipients.

Two thousand sixteen was the 70th Anniversary of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. With your donations and contributions, our SVdP Corpus Christi Conference and those we assisted felt very blessed this past year. With your help, and over 4,500 volunteer hours from our SVdP members, we were able to assist 1,290 adults and children, which included partial rental for 127 families, utilities for 101 families and distributed 505 boxes of food. Ninety-nine cents of every dollar in donations is being spent for the needy.

The Giving Tree program alone was quite a success. We distributed 1,132 gifts and 38 food boxes. The $3,600 cash donation that was collected will be used for diapers, perishables and financial assistance as needed. Words are inadequate to express the gratitude of the recipients.

We will be forever grateful for your generosity and continued support. Thank you for being the light in our community.

Ruth Tily President SVdP, Corpus Christi Conference

Feasts of the Week Monday, February 6th: Paul Miki, Jesuit scholastic, and his twenty-five companions; including two other Jesuits, six Franciscans, fifteen tertiaries, and two laymen, were crucified by order of the ruler Hideyoshi on Feb. 5, 1597 at Nagasaki; among them the Mexican, Felipe de Jesus, first martyr from the Americas to be beatified; protomartyrs of the Far East (canonized in 1862 by Pope Pius IX).

Wednesday, February 8th: Jerome Emiliani, † 1537 of the plague; Venetian soldier whose conversion led to the founding of the Clerks Regular of Somascha, today numbering about 475 members; dedicated to the poor and the education of youth; patron of orphans and abandoned children.

Josephine Bakhita was born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith. She was kidnapped around the age of seven by slave traders who gave her the name, “Bakhita,” meaning “lucky one.” She was sold to a number of owners until she was purchased at about the age of 12 by the Italian Consul Callisto Legnani. He brought her to Italy, and while serving as a nanny, was sent to live with the Canossian Sisters in Venice. There she was formally introduced to the faith, baptized Giuseppina, and eventually granted her freedom. In 1896 she joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity, and for twenty-five years served her sisters as cook, seamstress, and portress of their houses in Venice, Verona, and Schio. She was especially beloved by her students for her sweet nature and musical voice. After a long and painful illness, she died in 1947. Pope John Paul II canonized this first Sudanese saint on October 1, 2000 as a witness to evangelical reconciliation and a model of freedom.

Friday, February 10th: Scholastica, † c. 543 at Monte Cassino; twin sister of St. Benedict; “She could do more because she loved more” (Gregory the Great, The Dialogues); eventually interred in the same grave with her brother, St. Benedict; invoked against storms; patron saint of Benedictine nunneries.

Saturday, February 11th: Our Lady of Lourdes According to St. Bernadette (the visionary at Lourdes in 1858), the Virgin Mary proclaimed herself “the Immaculate Conception”; patroness of the Philippines and of Portugal under the title “Mary Immaculate. 8

What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? How do I register? All Catholics living within the Parish and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.

Adult children, 18+, need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get mar r ied, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.

Also, in order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program.

You can register by coming to the Parish Office and filling out a short registration form. The registration form can also be downloaded from our parish website.

How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. Preparation classes are also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism and are offered once a month.

How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive.

How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
