A Torah Thought from Rabbi Idstein...

Mr. Ford
After the seven days of inauguration concluded, Aharon and his
sons were to assume the role as Kohanim, the priests, uniquely
responsible for the Tabernacle service. A special installation was
delineated to consecrate the Kohanim in their new status. Moshe
commands Aharon to “draw near” to the Altar and begin. Sensing
Aharon’s hesitancy Moshe was compelled to call Aharon to come
forward. The Midrash, cited by Rashi, explains that Aharon felt
unworthy and ashamed to approach HaShem in the Divine service. Did
he not, after all, have a role in the sin of the Golden Calf? Moshe
called to Aharon to reassure him and tell him “Do not be ashamed to
step forward. You were chosen for this.”
Simply, Moshe was encouraging Aharon to set aside his
reservations; after all, HaShem himself chose him for this task.
The commentators, however, see a deeper message being conveyed.
Moshe was telling Aharon that it was specifically on account of
his humility that HaShem had chosen him for the High Priesthood.
HaShem treasures the humble and it is them that He chooses as His
agents. This insight serves as a guide and encouragement in our own
lives. Besides the Mitzvos that we all share, each of us is graced
with a unique set of talents and qualities. These special abilities
present us with our very own “Temple” of service. We may, however,
feel unworthy to step forward and actualize our gifts in the
service of HaShem, our neighbors, and communities. To this, we
should hear the charge of Moshe to strengthen ourselves and step
forward, not in spite of our humility, but because of it.
On the heels of Pesach, the celebration of becoming HaShem’s
chosen people; on the road to Shavuos when we commemorate our
resolve at Sinai to accept that challenge, this message is a call
to us all. Use the talents that HaShem has bequeathed to us. “Step
up to the plate.” Don’t be shy or hesitant to answer your unique
calling in the service to HaShem.

Enrichment Activities during the early dismissals this year.
Approximately 100 of the 147 eligible students participated each
Friday. That is over 68% participation! I hope the students found
it to be enjoyable and something they look forward to doing again
next year.

activities. If you haven’t already completed the survey, we
encourage you to do so. If you want to provide me with additional
feedback on the Friday Enrichment Activities and the General

Torah Tots 2-year oldsDear Parents,It’s great to see all of our
Torah Tot, smiley faces
back!They have all grown so much! We have a lot to
accomplish the text couple of week. Sefiras HaOmer, friendship
unit, seeds and growing flowers and much more! We can’t wait!

Torah Tots 3-year oldIt took us a few days for everyone to
return to
town, but we are thrilled to be back together again. We are
enjoying the weather, learning about umbrellas and the letter Uu,
making a class Omer chart, and we are studying all about which
animals are kosher and which ones aren’t.

Pre-KindergartenWelcome back! The children had so many
amazing stories to tell us about Pesach. We made our own Sefiras
HaOmer charts to count the Omer everyday. We learned about the
story of Rabbi Akiva and how important the mitzvah of “V’ahavta
L’reiacha Kamocha” is.
In Pirkei Avos, Perek Alef, we learned that the world stands on
three things—Torah, Avoda, and Gemilus Chassadim. We used a globe
to explain what this really means.
We know from Parshas Shimini what two signs an animal and what
two signs a fish needs to be kosher. Ask any Pre-K student they
would be happy to tell you!

The Pre-K students have started their next story unit, City
Mouse, Country Mouse. We have taken some time this week to discuss
where we would like to live and what types of things we see in the

week.
The children were all excited to talk about their Yom Tov
experiences and enthusiastically describe their sedarim.
This week we have begun preparing for our upcoming Chumash
celebration on Tuesday, May 19. It is an exciting time to be in
Kita Alef. We also are working hard on reading fluency as well as
progressing in our Chumash workbooks and Perek Alef.

on “Bossy R Trickers.” They read two stories in their decodable
readers. In math we continued to work on money skills. The test
will be next week. In science we are learning about rocks, soil,

you can encourage your daughters to read the perek (chapter)
pertaining to that week. This week’s chapter is Aleph (1).

school on Monday with an excitement to learn! In Chumash, we are
now learning about when Yaakov
Avinu met Rachel. This week, we had an important lesson in
Chumash how the pronunciation of a word can totally change the
meaning of the word. We discovered this after we found a
“contradiction” in the Chumash.

Welcome back! The third graders in my math group are finishing
up their unit on measurement tools with temperature, time, and
calendars this week. Below, see some math students in action;
learning about liquid measurement and practicing math computation
outside! This week, we began writing stories using the pictures
from The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Alsburg. We read
more about migration within the USA in Social Studies, and
continued with the Solar System in Science. In grammar, we are
practicing the rules of writing plurals, and this theme is also
carried into our weekly spelling list.
Mrs. L. Halek4th GradeWe’re busy learning about the
Sabbatical
Shemittah year--the firve activities that are forbidden
according to the Torah. Our class is doing a project to demonstrate
what a farm in Israel looks like in this Sheviis year.
Rabbi Y. WaxmanWelcome back fourth grade families! I hope
you
all had an enjoyable Pesach break. Thank you for the warm
welcome back and everything you did to make transitions run
smoothly for all. This week in fourth grade, we are starting a new
reading book—Because of Winn- Dixie. We are practicing our
comprehension skills and how to paraphrase. We will continue
division in math as well as practice some algebra. In science, we
are dissecting owl pellets. We will start to discuss our states’
project and how it will look in social studies. Looking forward to

lot of great activities. For one, in science, the class
dissected a mystery animal! It was very exciting and educational.
We also started our states’ project and have all chosen a state to
study. We will probably do a Power Point and a poster presentation
that summarizes the state. We continue to read the book Shiloh and
will hopefully finish in the next week or two. So far, it appears
to be holding the boys’ interest. We are still doing vocabulary,
spelling, and grammar as part of our daily routine. I’m looking
forward to doing some projects as we embark on the end of the
year.

the
Makkos in Chumash even after Pesach!
Did you hear the “news”? We are busily preparing a shemittah
display in honor of this year’s mitzvah fair.
Also, in the spirit of Sefira and Achdus, we are working
together toward reaching our Yedios Klalyios goals.

worked on finishing their
books this week with many in the final stages of illustrating.
They are almost finished with reading the book, Mrs. Frisby and the
Rats of NIMH, since Mrs. Frisby was caught by Billy and put in a
cage as a pet. In vocabulary the boys are working on root words and
their definitions. It was wonderful to see everyone again.
Ms. S. HaaseAfter finishing Island of the Blue Dolphins
before
Pesach, the 5th grade girls created headbands using materials
that represent some of the items Karana used in her clothing and
everyday life. The burlap band represents the twine she made and
used, black feathers represent the cormorant feathers with which
she made a beautiful skirt, and the blue shells represent the
abalone shells she used for useful and decorative purposes. We are
now beginning the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

6th GradeThis week we started after Pesach break as if we
didn’t take a break from learning Gemara. We are learning how to
properly assess the value of damage that was done to a garden.
There are many variables based on the size of the field and how
much damage was done.

Bava
Kamma, HaKones! Mazel Tov!Rabbi Y. Waxman8th GradeThe eighth
graders are in their last home stretch!
Now that we are back after Pesach vacation, we are not only
counting the days—we are making our days count!!
With much to accomplish in a short time, we will fill our days
to the max!

the boys come back after the
Pesach break well rested and rejuvenated ready for the “home
stretch.” In the next few weeks, we are looking forward to
finishing Perek Hakones and starting a new perek.

grade girls- This class is working on
polynomials and how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them
using Algebraic reasoning. There will be a test next week. Also,
Engrade is completely up to date and can be used to check third
trimester progress.
6th grade girls- We are working on proportional
reasoning. Not only are they learning to solve proportions, but
also learning how to use proportions to solve real-life problems.
Engrade for this class is up to date and reflects progress for
third trimester.
5th grade girls-This class is learning about ratios and
proportions and how to use them in order to solve real-life
problems. I like the problem solving involved in proportional
reasoning and hope the girls learn some problem solving techniques
in addition to the math involved. In the near future, we will be
learning about percents as it nicely builds off of ratios.
7/8 boys (Algebra)-This class is currently working on
polynomials and how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them
using Algebra. There will be a test in the near future and we will
begin factoring. Any concepts after factoring are really an
introduction to Algebra II and can be useful in catapulting
students into Algebra II in a couple of years. Next year, all the
boys should be taking Geometry.
6th boys-We finally finished the chapter on inequalities and
will have taken a test on Friday. It’s the first big test of third
trimester and we did a lot of review before taking the test as much
of the learning was before the recent break. I am confident they
will have done well.
Mr. A. TiemannMiddle School Science6th Grade Science- This week
we are finishing
up volcanoes. Our test is coming up next week. Vocabulary is on
Engrade already. We were fascinated to see different materials’
viscosities and did an excellent job comparing them to lava types.
We also enjoyed making explosive and non-explosive volcanoes!

7th Grade Science- This week 6/7 girls are finishing up frog
dissections which they are so excited about that it is contagious;
boys are starting ecosystems and had a great time going outside to
identify abiotic and biotic factors.
8th Grade Science- This week we are wrapping up storms and
severe weather. It is so great to have natural disaster experts in
our class from the Academic Fair to explain to the class some of
the finer points and details that they researched in their
projects. Putting it all together, we will FINALLY really
understand what meteorologists are saying when they present a
weather forecast!
Ms. J. GerdesMiddle School Language Arts (Literature and
Writing)Welcome back middle school families! We hope
everyone had a great break! Mrs. Perkl is excited to be back and
missed all of her students. We are both looking forward to the rest
of the school year. In
literature, we will be starting new novels. We will have
comprehension and vocabulary practice with these new books. The
students will write about them in writing class. The students also
have a journal project that is due Friday April 17th. We look
forward to a great week!

What the 5th Grade Boys had to say about getting their first
Gemara....I liked the lesson that Rabbi Idstein taught us with the
orange. He said touch it=learning to read,
hold it=Chumash, smell it=Mishnayos, and eat it/enjoy it=
learning gemara....When you learn gemara you finally get to eat and
taste the sweetness of the Torah....I liked when Rabbi Idstein came
and blindfolded us. Rabbi Gibber said a great speech by the
breakfast....Getting my gemara was very inspiring....I’m excited
about getting a gemara because it’s giving a whole lot of
explanation for Mishnayos Bava Kamma....Thank you for all the time
you put into making the breakfast and buying us a gemara....It
might be easier to learn and understand the gemara because we
learned Bava Kamma in Mishnayos already....I could not stop
smiling....
