Dear Parishioners,

Jesus hammers down in today’s Holy Gospel: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.

For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say

to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of the

netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give to you the keys to the kingdom of

heaven.”

These words of Jesus always make me smile in absolute amazement of 2000 years of

Church history. With billions of faithful, People of God, throughout the entire history

of humanity, good and bad, how does Jesus keep us together? How does He keep sin

and death from destroying us all? God’s Love unites us! By His design, St. Peter and

his successors still hold the keys of the kingdom of heaven! Do I personally accept the

authority that Jesus gave the Church through Peter?

It is so funny how recently one person asked me: When the Church tells you to

jump, do you just say, “How high?” Well, it certainly is my desire to act with Christ

Jesus and in accord with His Body, the Church. I don’t pretend to have some sort of

superior independent discernment or divine authority to do otherwise. Only by God’s

good grace are we sustained as One Body in Christ! I laugh out loud with sheer joy to

consider how marvelous is God’s uniting Love even in the midst of our human

condition.

This weekend we have much to celebrate in our Pastorate! Msgr. Zinkula’s glorious

return after so many moons. He is offering Mass at St. Columbkille. At St. Joseph the

Worker we welcome our new Director of Faith Formation, Emily Kahn—Ph.D.

Candidate, and our new Coordinator of Religious Education, Julie Hill, MA Pastoral

Ministry. Greet them after all Masses in Msgr. Martin Hall. God still has greater work

to do through us together!!

God’s Blessings upon you,

Fr. Gabriel
