2019 Season Sustainability Wrap Up Dear all, This was the first year Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island took on the challenge of adopting Live Nation’s Sustainability Department and its associated goals. Thanks to the collective efforts demonstrated by the venue’s staff and leadership, the Sustainability Department accomplished a great deal in 2019. The Numbers Between diverting waste, connecting with community partners, and educating staff and fans alike, the culture of sustainability has been embedded at HBNI. The venue was able to surpass a few milestones along the way, ranking 14 th in terms of total diversion amongst Live Nation venues. From May to September, over 120,000 pounds of waste was either composted, recycled, or donated, a 251% increase from last year. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support and hard work of HBNI’s Zero Waste Captains, alongside the selfless individuals who found themselves helping in the sorting area. Through tough conditions and much adversity, the Zero Waste Captains achieved something remarkable. These numbers will set the precedent for the 2020 season and hopefully inspire venues with similar programs. Here is what Huntington Bank Pavilion accomplished this year.

Highlight of the Season

Meet Me In The Park!

Chicago Parks Foundation & Vampire Weekend Not only were fans treated to a whopping 31 song setlist on a very special Father’s Day show, they were provided a unique opportunity to help fundraise for a local cause. Huntington Bank Pavilion was pleased to host the Chicago Parks Foundation, an independent 501 c3 organization aimed at preserving the many parks around Chicago. The event, Meet Me in the Park!, encouraged music lovers to say no to plastic. A limited-edition reusable cup was made available to fans to help cut down on the venue’s plastic waste while a team from the foundation helped to educate fans on Chicago’s plan to phase out single-use plastics in their parks system. The money raised from the cups will be reflected in the Chicago community, seeing that Vampire Weekend donated 100% of the proceeds made. Because the venue is located in a park, this opportunity was the perfect way to give back. In past years, the venue has worked with a number of artists to hoping to make an impact in the environment, including Willie Nelson, Dave Matthews Band, and Jack Johnson. Here’s to connecting with more tours in 2020 so the venue may continue hosting sustainable activations!

Connecting with our Community

Chicago Sustainability Task Force

Led by Stephanie Katsaros, founder and president of Bright Beat, the taskforce joined the sustainability team for Beck & Cage The Elephant to discuss how the venue can continue to ramp up its sustainable efforts. Between The Carbon Free Experience at The Museum Campus and the EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge, they introduced the venue to many programs that will help set goals in 2020.

Delta Institute & Delta Emerging Leaders (DELs) Delta Institute, one of Chicago’s premier environmental nonprofits, joined the team during the Avett Brothers to promote BOOST, a crowd funded pitch-fest aiming to solve complex sustainable problems around Chicago. Thanks to the Delta Emerging Leaders, fans were encouraged to attend the event and were educated about the venue’s waste streams.

Chicago Parks Department Before the season began, Huntington Bank Pavilion celebrated Earth Day with the Chicago Park District. Band Members from the venue spent the day removing trash and mulching trees on Northerly Island surrounding the venue with representatives from the Parks Department.

It’s rare to wake up feeling excited for work, but that’s exactly how this job made me feel. I can’t stress how grateful I am for everyone listed above, for all their hard work and devotion to the program. I’m excited to see where we go this upcoming season. Until then, keep sustaining. Thank you again! Best, Peter Scruggs Venue Sustainability Coordinator
