TIPOFF BYU men’s basketball hits the road for the first time this
season on Tuesday when they face No. 12 Oregon at the Phil Knight
Invitational at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore. Tipoff is
scheduled for 8 p.m. MST.
Tuesday’s contest will be broadcast on ESPN. It will be broadcast
live on BYU Sports Network on BYU Radio – Sirius XM 143/89.1 FM HD2
and KSL 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
BYU NOTES The Cougars improved to 2-0 on the season following a
66-60 victory over San Diego State on Friday evening in front of
16,470 fans including 4,292 at the Marriott Center BYU outrebounded
the Aztecs by four, 42-38.
Barcello scored a team-high 17 points, marking his fifth straight
game in double figures. Te’Jon Lucas also reached double figures
for the first time as Coug with 13 points.
Fousseyni Traore doesn’t play like a freshman. Not one bit. The
Wasatch Academy product is averaging 7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5
blocks after his first two collegiate games after filling the stat
sheet against SDSU. Seven of his 16 rebounds have come on the
offensive glass.
BIG SHOT BARCELLO Barcello is already making his case for the most
clutch player in college basketball this season following Kobe
Bryant-esque finish against San Diego State. After making a corner
3 to give BYU a 57-54 lead with three minutes remaining in
regulation, the senior guard weaved his way through the Aztec
defense two minutes later for a pull-up jumper to seal the Cougars
second straight victory over the Aztecs.
The Chandler, Ariz. native is 4-of-4 from the field in the final
five minutes through two games. He also improved his consecutive
free throw streak to 35, the fourth-longest streak in program
history.
A FAMILY AFFAIR Spencer Johnson will face off against his brother,
Isaac, on Tuesday. The elder Johnson has been a key bench player
during his time as Cougar making 29 appearances since transferring
from Salt Lake Community College. Isaac, a freshman and former
four-star recruit, made his collegiate debut in the Ducks season
opener against Texas Southern.
